It is kind of interesting if you think about it.

In time, one ends up maining 1 character, 2 or 3 tops. I'll never pick up Blanka or Dhalsim, so why bother? Maybe they should make a model where every now and then they let you use one different character, and you decide if you like it, then you buy it.

I thought of this also when playing the MK Trilogy Demo. They let you play only the first stage in each game, but with any character. Or the Darkstalkers demo, where they give you only 3 characters, but accross several stages.

It's an interesting model, yet to be explored, but as a gamer, it would empower you with lower prices (probably) and not paying for stuff that doesn't hold value to you.

I guess everyone plays fighting games different..i for myself try out as many cahracters as possible ..play it through with them all if there is a story to explore and also try to be good with all characters instead of maining just 1 or 2 ..in the past i was known to be invinicble no matter what sf..mk or tekken character i would use.... (now i am old and grumpy but ya know..the nineties..)

To be able to play as only one character and having to pay for others is ridiculous for me

Not everyone is like this you know. Some people like to learn how to play as all the characters and just use random. That's what me and my buddy do. Why stick to 1-3 characters unless you're planning on going pro?

I figure you could do something like League of Legends. Having a monthly rotating list of characters you can try out for free to see if you like them, while the devs develop new DLC characters for the future. Pay for characters and pals/costumes. Etc.

F2P removes a barrier of entry for a lot of people who don't want to put down 60 bucks for something that might play like Rise of the Robots. With a selection of free-to-try characters, you can give people an idea of how the game plays and how those characters work. You have to build customer trust and having no barrier of entry is a great way to earn it.

But again, the problem is just having Jago is a terrible idea. Just one character isn't going to do dick for helping you understand the intricacies of the game. What if Jago isn't your style? Well I guess you're just shit out of luck then. And that's terrible.

I also always wondered what it's like for people that main characters playing online against each other. Don't you get tired of having the exact same matches with the same person so often?

Yeah but that works for demos because you're pretty much testing the game's waters.

In this case, there's really no excuse to have just ONE character and have you pay for a majority of the cast. Compare with the recent announcement of the F2P Tekken game for example, which has eight starter characters straight from the gate and apparently uses in-game currency that can be used to get characters and costumes without using your actual pocket. I think Tekken is doing the rotating character thing as well last I checked.

Granted, there could be later news that can alleviate some of these concerns....but I'm not holding my breath.

Match up experience? Most pros tend to play every character just to know which moves are safe, unsafe, to find the best way to punish them, etc.

But yeah, for the general public, I guess it somewhat works? I don't know.

Until now, only Jago, Sabrewulf, and Glacius have been revealed for the new Killer Instinct on Xbox One, but Double Helix has since confirmed three more returning characters.

Fulgore, Spinal, and Cinder will return. Cinder will be more balanced than he was compared to the original Killer Instinct.

Additionally, brand new characters are also being created.

While the game will be free-to-play with one starting character and additional characters available as add-on purchases, there will also be different packages available for purchase.

Killer Instinct will be available as an Xbox One launch title this November. While it’s not being developed at the studio of its creators at Rare, Double Helix said it is working closely with the company and fighting game professionals.

The guys who make this seem pretty cool. Shame it's on a terrible system.

I only know how to use one character in Killer Instinct, and that's only because Ahrimanes made a mugen character of her.

A bit more from the original article on RareFandabase:

Quote
Development began on Xbox One. It was never in development for Xbox 360 as many seem to believe.

The demo at E3 was put together within five weeks time.

The game will be ready in time for Xbox One’s launch.

It is indeed “free-to-play”, but there will be different packages available to purchase.

No Mercy’s and Ultimate Combo’s are currently not planned for the game as the developers believe “they aren’t necessary”. This can change, however, if the fan community pushes for them to be included. This would mostly likely happen as patch later on, however.

They want to include more female characters considering there are so many male characters in the original games.

The game is a blend of both the original Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2/Gold.

The developers are working very closely with Rare and Ken Lobb on the project. They are also getting feedback from professionals in the gaming fighting scene.

The E3 Demo alone is over two million lines of code.

It’s possible to enter an Ultra Combo, exit it, and then re-enter it again for a very powerful Ultra Combo. The developers say they’ve yet to see anyone pull it off.

The environments in the game are fully destructible. As combos are continually done, the level falls apart. If the match is finished with an Ultra Combo, then the entire arena will “explode”.

The voices in the game are being recorded by professional actors.

The combo system is a bit more “streamlined” so that anyone will be able to pull off big combos.

They showed how to do this in the Gamespot stage demo; start the Ultra combo, trigger Instinct Mode which will stop the Ultra, then start a new Ultra.
