It's about African "rebels" in Uganda killing people and forcing young children to become soldiers and sex slaves.

It's something that blew up overnight. One of those "like this status and Facebook will donate" things. I don't have much research or knowledge on it, but the word is that it's been going on for over 20 years. The leader of the rebels', LRA (I believe), name is Joseph Kony.

"Kony 2012" is a Youtube originated term that aims to make the world know more about Kony so that he may be stopped.

I'm completely indifferent to it (watch as I contradict myself). I do, however, think that the sudden care that people have is misguided. While it's good that information can travel this fast, it's not good that people feel they automatically know what's going on in a country simply because of one man's video. I personally think that, while, sure, it COULD be a good thing (not necessarily) to get involved and stop Kony, there are things going on in other countries, specifically America, that involve things as simple as equal rights and privileges for all people. If we can't get that right, then what's another country's problems to us? I think proper international etiquette would be to deal with the problems that already exist --  even the more serious ones that I haven't mentioned like the "War on terror."

Of course I'm comparing equal rights for gays with the lives of innocent children, but my point still stands! Somewhat!

One person's villain is another person's hero. Although in the case of children being exploited (the "gimmick" that's supposed to catch people's attention), that cliche could easily be canceled out. It definitely depends on the facts.

Current object of Kony 2012 is to make Joseph Kony known, U.S already sent some soldiers to help (Thnx to author), but to achieve the objective of arresting Kony is to make him known, so facebook fits perfect. Also they plan action on 20th April .

So they already did something with facebook.

The Invisible Children came to our school as a fundraiser to get money as well for this cause and it was selling t-shirts, necklaces, and other sorts of things. I want the situation to be resolved because it isn't right what they do down in Uganda.

I don't want to be the conspiracy theorist guy, but somebody somewhere is probably using this just to make profits. Because T-Shirts and stuff sound a little unnecessary.

this is relevant: http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/post/18890947431/we-got-trouble
So, the critic is that 2/3 of the total raised buget is spend on something different than actual efforts? They make the organization sound like dirty filmmaking hippies "They spend the money in transportation, and filmmaking and staff salaries".

It all sounds failry reasonable to me.

I assume the organization has its base in the US, or a more northwestern country than Uganda. That means under whatever circumstances the volunteers must me making at least the minimum wage, which is a whole goddamn lot. Not to mention this might be somewhat dangerous, so I don't think they'd be making as much money as someone flipping burgers at Burger King.

Then they need to move by plane to Uganda which is expensive as fuck, and I don't believe a volunteer would go all by himself to Uganda. They must travel in groups. Filmmaking is to raise awareness, which is one of their primary objectives. And the money they give to the military forces (while these forces allegedly violate human rights as well) and showing them in a negative light because "fighting firepower with firepower" is bad by the standards of whoever made that website is something I disagree with. As someone who heard gunshots 2 blocks away from his window, I can say IMO this is the only way.

These guys are going to the only instance that could help them face Kony in the same scale as he would. It's a very direct and hands on strategy if you ask me. There are no long term strategic plans within the government's reach to erradicate poverty, or give more education for these children to avoid being abducted to become forced millitia for Kony, so getting rid of the bastard is the only way. Don't let the percentages fool you, if that's how the organization's finances must be managed, then who are you to say it's not the only way.

As a volunteer myself in different causes with similar ends of helping those in need, I know these operations are costly. While it's good that information can travel this fast, it's not good that people feel they automatically know what's wrong with an organization simply because of one man's webpage criitque.

If supporting a cause or donating out of charity (without the purpose of deducting taxes) is being ripped off, then yes, you are being ripped off when you find it in yourself to give to others. Ripped off 100%

I walked by a T.V. somewhere today that was discussing the internet and how it allows people to falsely think that they're making a difference by posting videos and blogs about an issue.

If you want to "help," use your next 100 million dollar paycheck to take your army to Africa and go kill a bunch of people who, like you, also think they're doing something right.

The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces. Here’s a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission. These books each refer to the rape and sexual assault that are perennial issues with the UPDF, the military group Invisible Children is defending.

http://boingboing.net/2012/03/14/uganda-screening-of-kony-201.html

They screened the video in uganda.
Uganda citizens were expecting a documentary that portrayed their suffering and exposed the crimes that happened there and didnt take it well, with what they think is exploitative bullshit.

Quote
Having heard so many great things about the film, the crowd’s expectations were high.

People I spoke to anticipated seeing a video that showed the world the terrible atrocities that they had suffered during the conflict, and the ongoing struggles they still face trying to rebuild their lives after two lost decades.

The audience was at first puzzled to see the narrative lead by an American man – Jason Russell – and his young son.

Towards the end of the film, the mood turned more to anger at what many people saw as a foreign, inaccurate account that belittled and commercialised their suffering, as the film promotes Kony bracelets and other fundraising merchandise, with the aim of making Kony infamous.

One woman I spoke to made the comparison of selling Osama Bin Laden paraphernalia post 9/11 – likely to be highly offensive to many Americans, however well intentioned the campaign behind it.

The event ended with the angrier members of the audience throwing rocks and shouting abusive criticism, as the rest fled for safety, leaving an abandoned projector, with organisers and the press running for cover

After watching the vid (at 1.5 speed, thanx):

-Nice branding, nice narrative (for most of the middle-and-upper-class audience, of course), excellent marketing design. Since 'kits' are sold, I think the proper term for this is iActivism. :P

-Music had a nice thump when it had to, building up expectation. Sounded much like a movie trailer (COMING IN 2012!).

-Didn't show the really ugly stuff except in some flashes (did you even notice there is no blood or injured people in hospitals? The only red you'll see is in their 'Kony' shirts), appeals to the 'awwww' factor when showing the clean white blonde kid. The poor traumatized black kid appears for a bit, but when showing him as a grown man he is 'whitefied' and happy. Yay! No other significant black character is shown in the vid-no need to hear more sad stories, they're probably all the same. Also their personalities. Also, god forbid any of them actually joined the rebels because they agreed with some of their ideals or any of them actually reveal that this is a highly complex conflict, and that their culture is different from ours.

-We know rebel groups are baaaaad and the local army is gooooood (oops, ignore that comment if you are in Syria or were in Lebanon, or if you watched Star Wars, of course). The UN is nice but they can't do squat (because they're sissies anyway like the Europeans, but let's not say it out loud). But Obama is good and he sent the (good!) Ugandan military some advisors. Yay!

-The narrative itself is nice, because it's told from the viewpoint of a white middle-to-higher-class USA young and handsome male who wants to defend his own interests and his son's, not from any of the actual victims I can't relate to.

-Best of all: we get to feel totally guilt-free (and maybe earn some fuel for some moralist random 'freedom fighting' invasion in a country abroad?) for the cost of less than a videogame console. If we really cared about Africa we'd actually have to read some stuff (booooooriiiing) about the current situation and history there instead of just watching a 30' vid, and that's too much; putting some (few) $$$ comes with less of a brain effort and makes us feel like we're saving the world anyway! Yipeee!

Good analysis, nothing more to add, except:

iActivism. :P
Slacktivism is the proper term! Ask Wikipedia! I actually came across the term about a week ago while educating myself on the Kony issue and the company behind the notorious video.

My conclusion is the same as yours (if what I think is saracasm in your post is actually sarcasm =P).

Years of history in a 30 minute video, etc, etc. It's just not right, especially considering the facts.

I don't really agree with that type of criticism. It's just meaningless idealism in the end.

There are two ways to go about activism: Appeal to "how it should be" and "what people should do" in an idealistic fashion, or work with what's actually there and how people actually act for maximum profit. Guess which is more effective (hint: it's the one capitalism is founded on)

There is also the difference between reaching a very narrow but very accurate audience, and a very wide but completely inaccurate (if not just random) audience. Guess which is more effective (hint: it's the one capitalism is founded on)

The whole explain to a child deal is a very American thing, like all the "for my home&family" commercials. It's kinda weird but I guess that's just their values.. :P

what is not a thing? what I am talking about is a fairly distinct kind of patriotism, the explaining to the children thing here is just a very specific instance
Wait. What.
The whole explain to a child deal is a very American thing
how did that turn into patriotism???? :S

Argentina is not in the western world, then. But I guess it's okay, since you already stole took on the name of the continent, why not go for the name of the whole hemisfere? :P
-_-

also America is not a hemisphere

seems to be a general 'western world' philosophy

i don't see anything distinctly american about it

europe came up with the 'western world' term
blame them

The whole "we now stop to explain this five year old atrocities" is extremely ham fisted way to make people sad. The ugandan population reaction to this is completely understandable, people defending this dont really care that much about what the ugandians are going through but more about looking moral and concerned.

^ who are the brown people in above image  :???:

reducing an issue to an easily digested blurb to be delivered to the NORTH american (sans mexico and canada) youth = good profitable idea

delivering that easily digested blurb to the people directly affected by said issue = really stupid idea

the connection to patriotism is in the area of "doesn't anyone think of the children?"

Ugh, this is really difficult to explain. I'm too lazy to do that, so I'll change my statement from "that's very American" to "feels kinda American-ish to me", I can be wrong there and not feel too bad :P

LOL, I was wondering when you'd come out and make your usual comment. ;D

My comment was relevant to the overall topic, still- overgeneralizing. Wether it is 'all USAAians teach horrible stuff like they would do to their 4-year olds', or 'all western nations think like americans', or 'all african victims in this conflict are exactly like the single guy we showed in our vid'.

You're welcome.

I still wonder if you ever had an opinion regarding the topic at hand or if you just wanted to take your daily jab at me. Megh.

youtube videos and facebook comments won't do shit, good luck

Current object of Kony 2012 is to make Joseph Kony known, U.S already sent some soldiers to help (Thnx to author), but to achieve the objective of arresting Kony is to make him known, so facebook fits perfect. Also they plan action on 20th April .

So they already did something with facebook.
