... Those are not Indy cars! Those are Formula One cars!

:omg:

Ah!! Fixed. ;D

Wow man, thanks for the info. I may have to view it again now that you familiarized me with the whole history thing here. Cool find too; those resemblances are definitely uncanny.

Also, Hunt the Shunt actually banged all those gals in those situations. He was a womaniser bastard. :P

Edit: Just finished watching Days of Future Past. Entertaining film, this one.
Pretty decent, I'd say. Falls very short compared to the one I watched earlier today, but still worth watching.
Quicksilver bit was fairly fun.
Overall, I enjoyed it.

What did you watch earlier in the day?? X2?? First Class?? Those were also pretty good and Days of Future Past was a lot of Fun. While Hugh Jackman's physique is awesome and admirable (I have no problem admitting if a guy is good looking/handsome), he really needs to lay off of the steroids. Seriously... compare him between all films from the first one onward and it's kinda obvious.

I'd give Days of Future Past and First Class an 8/10. It was awesome to see Wolverine kick ass and Michael Fastbender do the same, but out of retribution. I've always loved revenge/retribution plots.

I posted it on this very thread a few hours before. It was Princess Bride.
Of course Days of Future Past would fall short when compared to such a great film. Even the original Conan or the original Robocop get a run for their money against The Princess Bride.

Edit: Also, yeah... Hugh Jackman should lay off the steroids for a bit. He surely is easy on the eyes, but damn, he got huge...

Hercules: The Legendary... oh wait just Hercules (2014)

Yeah, I went into this movie with relatively low expectations and it turned out to be pretty decent. Nice action, fun characters, good acting for the most part (Ian McShane and John Hurt in one movie? For extended periods of time?), nothing painfully Ratner-ish about the direction or the tone of the movie, and (this may be the most important of all) it DIDN'T LAST 2 AND A HALF HOURS. In an age where most action directors can't seem to find the edit program in their movie-making suite (I'm looking at you Transformers 4 you bloated piece of garbage!), an action movie that's just 80-90 minutes is like a breath of fresh air.

7/10

If you just close your eyes.
If you just close your eyes.

So I rewatched
Event Horizon

The first time I watched this, I expected just some normal sci-fi movie about w/e. Damn, I was surprised when it went all thriller/psychological horror on me. I like the progression of the movie and the characters were interesting too. The one thing I disliked was the "doctor" who became the antagonist too easily without much resistance. I found it kind of weird. Apart from that, the movie was very cool and kept me interested the entire time. Those gorey little parts did shock me as they were literally random AF and I wasn't expecting it at all. Awesome movie.

It's sad that this and Mortal Kombat are his best works. Everything after has been downhill in my opinion.

Ah, OK. My bad. :omg:

I do agree with you on the RoboCop and Conan comparisons. I feel that all of those films from the 80's and 90's will edge out a majority of stuff from nowadays. Back then, studios were far more creative through releasing original content, I.E. lots of interesting and thoughtful experimentation through clever writing. Everything had such charm and character, and the film built upon those basic elements. They don't make stuff like Back to the Future, Big Trouble in Little China, The Usual Suspects, RoboCop, Short Circuit, The Terminator, Top Gun, Ghostbusters, The Matrix, Snatch or Fight Club anymore. You get a few standouts today, but not as much as you did back then.

Welp, today begins my viewing of HIFF movies! And what a start I have, because my first movie is:

The Furthest End Awaits (Japan)

No, this movie has nothing to do with the apocalypse despite the way its title sounds. It's actually a story about a middle-aged woman, Misaki, whose father is now legally dead (he's been missing for 8+ years), and she inherits a worthless boathouse that he used to own, which she proceeds to convert into a coffee shop. Next door is a woman named Eriko, a 20-something single mother who works as a hostess in the city. Over the course of the movie, the two women form a unique friendship.

I'll be honest, I had my doubts. First of all, I generally have had difficult times with Japanese movies that ended up in the arthouse, as a lot of the ones I've seen tend to be cliche and unsatisfying with lots of loose ends that never get resolved. This was smited when the director came forward  before the movie (it's common for the directors/producers/actors to show up at the festivals for Q&A) and started talking... in Mandarin. Chiang Hsiu-Chiung hails from Taiwan, and thus the movie was a joint collaboration between Japanese and Taiwanese filmmaking. My second doubts kicked in because I was beginning to have flashbacks of every time I watched a Taiwanese New Wave movie (a movie produced between 1990 and 2010 which focused on realism, or rather, maintaining a single shot on something for about five minutes where nothing of consequence happens), and I thought that I essentially traded in one downside for another.

I'm happy to report that neither of my fears occurred. True, there are quite a number of establishing shots, but it feels like every shot is conveying something. While Eriko and Misaki are the main characters and the story arcs are do an excellent job of yo-yo'ing between the two, I can't help but feel that Eriko's children, Arisa and Shota, steal the show with their innocence and optimism when there's just so much negative going on around them. The movie also does a good job of addressing how much these two women are pretty much on their own in life, just trying to get by. If I had to give a downside, there's a part in the movie that gets really, really dark which I won't go into, but after it's done, it has surprisingly little impact on the plot outside of a joke later on.

Outside of that one negative, this movie is handled very well, and it's an example of a women-centric movies done right.

Night two at the HIFF, and goddamn.

Lupin The Third

Lupin and the gang are after The Crimson Heart of Cleopatra, a treasure created by Marc Anthony and Cleopatra that has been split into two pieces: a necklace and a priceless ruby. However, there's a rival gang lead by a thief named Michael that's after the same thing. Furthermore, the necklace is held by a former thief, Dawson, while the Ruby is held by a kingpin in the Southeast Asian underworld, Pramuk. Will they pull it off?!

In the tradition of Marvel's superhero movies, Lupin The Third tells a new story on how the group got together for the first time. The circumstances are... well they aren't as happy as you'd probably expect if you're a fan of Lupin, but it works. Ryuhei Kitamura (who is most well-known for his movies Versus and Godzilla: Final Wars), in my opinion, did a great job of taking the Lupin formula and updating it for a modern-day crowd. Parts of it feel like Ocean's Eleven, but mixed in with Lupin's wit and charm. Additionally, the casting for both the mainstays and the newcomers is great. All the mainstays nail their parts perfectly (although Jigen probably could've had some more time in the spotlight), and they add in some depth that complements the characters rather than overpower it. The rival gang is also pretty well-done, and they're basically the anti-Lupin, with over-the-top designs and ridiculously awesome weapons and firepower. In a way it's like a clash between old-school and new-school, and it's done very well. Spoken languages switch around alot, from Japanese to English to Chinese to Thai, and while that means it's a NECESSITY to watch with subtitles, I personally like how much fun they have with it.

If I had some complaints to levy at this movie, I felt that the whole opening bit with Michael and Dawson were a bit out of place, and while they establish the plot, most of the other concepts that were introduced (ie: "The Works," a group of thieves that is headed by Dawson) are quickly abandoned. Additionally, seriously Mr. Kitamura? No Lupin III theme? I mean, Tomoyasu Hotei's original song for the movie kicks a lot of ass, but the original theme couldn't even show up in the credits?

Those minor nags aside, this movie is a real fucking roller coaster ride of a movie, and one that almost anyone would want to watch again and again.

10/10

Sorry, Guardians of the Galaxy, you're no longer my favorite movie of 2014

John Wick

This movie is what it promises to be. The body count keeps going up every minute of the movie, and some kills get up close and personal. They don't make movies like this anymore, it reminded me of the first 2 Die Hards. Worth every damn penny.

My friends compared it to the first Taken, but I don't recall that one being so "bloody" and sometimes tortuous for the main character, thus my comparison to Die Hard 1 and 2. Definitely go watch it.

HIFF coverage continues!

Bang Bang! (India) (not to be confused with the Rammstein song of the same name)

A thief named Rajveer is paid by international crime lord Omar Zafar to steal the Kohinoor. Meanwhile, a receptionist named Harleen is finding her life as a bank receptionist boring, and she decides she wants to finally try online dating. Naturally these stories are going to intertwine with each other. Naturally. Oh and I guess it's a remake of some shitty movie starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz? I dunno, I didn't see it.

If you haven't figured it out, this is a Bollywood movie! So expect lots of over-the-top action, lots of impossibly sexy actors (hell, Rajveer's actor has some of the hottest abs I've ever seen and my Kinsey score has since increased by one point), and moments where people just bust out singing in elaborate dance numbers for no reason. There's quite a bit of hilarious bits and smart dialogue, and the action sequences are pure eye-candy. The soundtrack is ridiculously catchy as well, and I found myself bobbing my head in time with the music a lot. I should also add that this is the first movie of the festival so far that got a standing ovation!

Now for the downsides. As a Bollywood film, this is actually pretty tame. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of stuff that wouldn't fly in a non-Bollywood production, but it feels like the direction team toned a lot of things down, especially during the third quarter of the movie, where things start to get a lot more serious. In a way, it feels once you hit that part, the movie loses quite a bit of its charm and starts trying to ape Hollywood movies, and while there are still funny moments, it feels a lot more generic and cookie-cutter.

So basically, on one hand, I really love the first half of this movie, but it really starts to peter out as you go further in, and it's a damn shame, because that first half is fucking incredible.

8.5/10

I will now leave you with the first big song number in the movie:

Interstellar

I can't really describe it with words. The best thing I can say is the movie made me feel like an insignificant being in a huge universe that has a lifespan of a fraction of a second.

Rank it among other Nolan movies, just to get an idea. Sort it like a Top 5 - would Interstellar be in there?

I'm a little biased because science, physics and space exploration fascinate me, but I'll give a try.

Taking Bats out of the equation and leaving the other 3 movies I know from Nolan (Memento, The Prestige and Inception) in the equation, the first thing I must say is as usual there's always this recursive/escher-ish feeling to this movie too.

1. Interstellar
2. The prestige
3. Inception
4. Memento

I placed Interstellar in the first place because that's a story I can believe in because theres some scientific backing to it, and knowing it could be real (with some stretchs, of course... after all this is a movie) made me think about a lot of stuff and feel a helluva lot of things. I see some elements from the other movies mixed here together, like the "scientific" part in The Prestige (the Tesla stuff), the way Inception plays with your mind making you wonder if there's a "bigger" reality than the one you are experiencing or the order the story is told, like in Memento.

I'll have to watch this movie 2 or 3 more times to catch some details again.

Horns

Started out alright, with how the horns made people tell their sins, and commit them. Then sorta fell flat the rest of the way, but the biggest thing that annoyed me was the fact they never even bother to explain why he got them in the first place, I mean it's basically belittling your audience into thinking they aren't smart enough to realize you went this entire movie without explaining at all why he has horns.
