Birdman

Washed up 90s actor puts everything on the line in a last attempt to stay relevant and respectable in show business, while he fights his internal demons and constantly alternating shots between reality and fantasy in some very impressive long shots that make the movie feel like almost 2 or 3 continuous shots. It's up close and personal, it looks great, loved it.

Interstellar

Best Nolan film thus far, everything is great, there are a lot of themes and all of them are approached in a great way, and thankfully the characters are not monologuing about it like in the Batman's or Inception.
And about characters...

Lots of fun, oh, and it's the first time I enjoy a movie with Matthew McConaughey in it.

There's a Criterion sale at Barnes & Noble, so I picked up:

Eraserhead

Plot? HAH.

This time I'm going to start off the review with the negatives. There is a lot of downtime. A LOT. Seriously, for every batshit crazy thing that happens in this movie, there's a lot of Henry just staring around looking surprised or scared. Or there's an establishing shot. Or there's just shots of the camera panning around and nothing happening. It's a shame because when things go nuts, it's beautiful, but most of the time... you're just waiting for something to happen.

So what saves this movie? A few things. First of all, like I said, the visuals are pretty darn impressive! The baby has to take the award for creepiest thing on film. Looking at screenshots of it doesn't do it justice, watching it in motion is beautiful (?) and it really does make you wonder how the damn thing was constructed. The other honorable mention of course has to go to the dinner scene, aside from the token "chicken cutting" scene, there's a lot of other bizarre happenings going down that just need to be seen in motion to fully appreciate.

Maybe I'm the wrong audience for this movie, but yeah, I felt like a lot of it dragged, but whenever the surrealism kicked in... WOW.

7/10

X-Men 2:

It is a fine, entertaining film. They set stuff up properly for X-Men 3... but dropped the ball so hard on that one. :|
Seeing Hugh Jackman so young and so tiny compared to his current self was kinda weird too.
Overall, fun film. Worth the 2 hours you spend watching it.

There's nothing wrong with ScarJo's boobs but her acting in this movie however WAS a problem for me. It started out pretty good but as she's developing these beforementioned god-like abilities her acting switches to utmost boring. Most likely a director's decision (but not a good one imo).
Also yeah, this movie had one of the most misleading trailers I've ever seen, I think most people were expecting more of a Matrix-inspired action fest, but guess what; she doesn't actually throw a SINGLE punch or kick in this movie (instead of action it goes into...deeper material). I was pretty thrown off by it tbh.
No more then 3/10 for me.

Interstellar

Loved how imaginatively mind-bending it is. Slightly long, and some parts were over exposed, it could definitely have been shorter, Nolan just thought he could get away with anything. Watch it, it's fun. Could have been shorter :P

Rating: 8.5/10 (9.5 if it was shorter)

Deliver us from evil

Eric Bana investigates a demon worshiper on a mission, shit escalates. Some scares are well pulled off, but its strongest point is definitely the suspense. JOEL McHALE IS A BUFF COP.

Badlands

Holly is a 15-year-old highschooler in South Dakota whose mother died. She lives alone with her dad and dog. Kit is a 25-year-old greaser who can't hold a job. He hates it when people litter. They fall in love, and Kit wants Holly to run away with him. As they trek across South Dakota and head to Montana, their relationship is put through trials and tribulations to see how much they truly love each other. Oh yeah and a lot of people get killed in the process because these characters are loosely based on Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend who went on a killing spree in 1958.

It's really hard to mix a crime movie with a coming of age romance story, but somehow Badlands really pulls it off. Martin Sheen's Kit is both charming and psychotic, often yo-yo'ing between the two. One minute he's prince charming for Holly, the next minute he's shooting people that are even suspected of betraying him, and part of the tension is wondering who's going to get shot next. I also love how Holly's voiceover frames the movie, with her commenting on even minute details that would normally seem meaningless. Usually I dislike narrators, but she manages to add dimension to the scenes and make the experience even more whole. It's also really hard to see her innocence slowly corrode as she watches people getting killed and start wondering if she should really be with Kit.

If there was a downside to this movie, it would be that Holly's acting is a little... well, off. On one hand, I can see that she's supposed to be mostly innocent and not grasping the full consequences of what's going on, but at the same time, I feel that she under-reacts to a lot of really messed up shit!

Definitely recommended. It's a love story for people who are sick of romantic movies.

I loved this movie! The awesome fight scenes were fast and furious. The story was as good as the action too. Now I'm even more excited for Avengers 2.

Snowpiercer

Bioshock: the movie (Or I guess it should be Biotrain) starring Steve Rogers.

Kidding aside, really good movie. Great offbeat concept that did not trip on trying to be too clever and it had great visuals and action too. Ending could have been cut up a bit and I feel that it beat you over the head with some of the social commentary a bit too much, but those are fairly minor problems in an overall really good movie.

Yeah, that works.

No witty quotes though.

The Raid: Redemption
3rd Time I've watched it. Still intense, action-packed and well-excecuted. A real high mark in martial arts movie history!
8/10

The Raid 2: Berandal
I watched part 1 the day before, so my expectations were high. Overall I was a bit disappointed.
First and foremost; the movie is way too damn long (martial arts/action movies shouldn't be 2,5 hours long! Trivia tells me the first cut of this movie was even 3,5 hours long! WTF!).
Not just long but it felt dragged out in a lot of parts, some characters (like 'hammer girl' and 'baseball guy') could easily be cut and the movie would have turned out better for it. Same with the Koso character, played by Yayan Ruhian who also played Mad Dog in the first movie. That was just confusing; they should have added a huge scar on his throat and have it be Mad Dog instead of another character (though it's unlikely someone could survive the damages done to his character even in movie land). His character could have been cut from the movie and it wouldn't have mattered much (and it would have removed that beforementioned confusion and shorten the running time).
The fight scenes also failed to impress at times (the big exception being the final 1-on-1 fight in the kitchen which was simply amazing). I think this movie is overrated and part 1 is vastly superior.

I watched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and it was horribly boring shite. I admittedly came into it with limited Hunger Games exposure (which had failed to sell me on the series) but even if this was meant to be the slow, character-driven one they are doing it wrong. Scenes and monologues are basically repeated wholesale. The characters' motivations are garbage and they barely determine the action. The movie's internal logic completely collapses in on itself and the whole thing comes across as barely thought out. It is poorly paced, poorly scripted and criminally boring. Avoid. 2/5

Turtles Forever.

Simply Freakin AWESOME!!.
Yes indeed!

Seems I'm WAAAAYYYYY behind talking about the movies me and co workers have been watching each month.
I think the last one I mentioned was Guardians of the Galaxy back in August.

In September we watched Maze Runner.
I have to say I wasn't a particularly big fan of this movie. And have no desire to see the other 2 now. Though some of the guys and gals did like it and look forward to the next parts so I may get to see them anyway. I found the characters boring. The pacing bad. And the plot not knowing where it wants to go. Especially near the end.
The actual maze parts were not bad and the visuals were good. I just didn't feel it.
04/10

In October we watched Dracula the Untold Story.
This movie wasn't bad. It was very predictable IMO and many of the better scenes were shown in commercials but all in all I thought it was a decent "super hero-ish" take on the legend. It set itself up for a sequel but unless there's nothing better on when it comes out I doubt I'll be voting to watch it.
06/10

In November we watched Dumb and Dumber To.
This movie was absolutely hilarious! Much better than I thought it'd be. I remember enjoying and laughing at the 1st movie but no where like in this one. Though the group experience/laughter might have helped it a lot too. I HIGHLY recommend this one. Jim Carrey is back to doing the only thing that he's good at IMO. Don't get me wrong. I can't really stand him as a person from what I hear about him. But he can do comedy!
10/10

This Monday we watched The Hunger Games MockingJay Part 1.
I had never seen any of these movies so I watched the 1st 2 soon before. The 1st movie didn't impress me much. It was okay but the characters didn't seem to have life. I attribute it to being shell shocked due to their situation though so it may be intentional.

The second one I found to be much better. The characters really came to life in this one. The Hunger Games itself was more enjoyable to watch this time.

The 3rd one: Well, most of us didn't seem to care much for it. But I thought it was pretty good. I didn't see where all the logic fell in on itself like our last reviewer before did. I thought it built the rebellion up quite nicely. I don't know if I like the direction the Peeta story had nor it's influence. Katness seems quite obsessed at this point. And I kept wanting her actual boy friend to just ask "So, um... are we still a couple?"
All in all I think the next part will tell me if I really liked this part. It feels like the only point of this movie was to build the momentum for the next one.
07/10

Any suggestions for January's movie? Nothing really looks like it'll be standing out to me. We don't want to sit for a 3 hour movie with Hobbit after work. Taken 3 will be out and I loved part 1. Haven't seen part 2 but a third just feels like it's getting ridiculous.

If Interstellar is still playing by then I said we should watch it but I doubt it'll still be at that theater by then so I dunno.
