Hello fellow companions of the Mugen realm! Now for quite some time Mugen has been lacking quite a bit for me in the department of the Mario Universe. What I'm saying is that there are plenty of Mario's that have been made for Mugen, but a good majority of them don't play quite as one would expect them to. That is except for one particular char that is actually fairly well made. ShinRyoga & NeOaNkH's Super Mario is really nice and (mostly) fun to play with, however it's occurred to me that the sprites are just a tad lacking. The outlines are too black and don't make him blend in quite as well with the other characters. This became such an issue of mine, that I've decided to manually edit each individual sprite to give it better outlining. I've gotten at least 200 done so far, out of 700 and the results are actually quite visually pleasing IMO. Here's the difference.
Old   New
Judgments please! I plan on getting him done sometime soon. :p

EDIT: This started off as a Mario sprite project, but now it's been changing, seeing how a Mario sprite project is already in the works by another Mugen artist and has proven to look far better than my stuff. Currently the discussion has changed to modifying Link's sprites to look more true to the Link in the OOT game.

This could be pretty interesting if you play with the values a bit more and tweak them, davismaximus is doing an edit on Shinryoga's original sprites to make him more cvs-ish but it won't be the full set of sprites he originally came with, but this should at least give you some idea, with the middle one being a bit more of a simpler edit over the third.

Wow, that looks really nice! So davismaximus is doing something similar? I need to check that out.

At this rate he's not only making the sprites better but the moves too, rendering my project pretty useless. I might delete this.

Yeah, he edited the sprites Sean Altly needed for his Capcom vs the World Project, so that's why I said he won't have every sprite converted just what was needed for Sean's version specifically. Wouldn't want to stay you from your current work but I thought it was worth sharing. I think it would be worth experimenting, you can definitely learn from it, and of course improve your skills if you ever wanted to take it forward and adapt another character.

Thanks alot, I appreciate alot of the compassion, but at this rate I have no point in posting this. This guys clearly got this covered. However I want you to answer me something. I did some experimenting with NapoleonJonamite & KBN22's Link and was thinking of editing all those sprites, but can one of you tell me if someone else is already doing something better with him too? Here's what I've accomplished. Very small details.

I edited in the shield.

As far as I know, no other conversions of him exist as far as the sprites are concerned, just colour separation but no actual touching up. Though minor I do like those adjustments so far though, and I would suggest you keep it up. :)

Would be nice if you could touch up Link´s pants so they stop looking like Hayato´s. Good luck with that.

I'm doing a project similar to one you are asking about with AxKing's Link http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/link-wip-145645.msg1659105.html#msg1659105. Been working on it for some time but havent updated the topic in a while.Waiting for all the attacks to be done before i do so.http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/link-hero-of-time-149343.msg1739443.html#msg1739443 . If thats what you meant.

I like the edits that you're doing here for Link. I agree with some of the comments regarding the pants, if you could touch them up in a way that they stop looking like Hayato's pants (Maybe do some edits to the boots as well), then we'll be good. I would love to use your final product sprites in the next update I do to Link, if you don't mind my asking.

SaturnFrost, that's exactly what I was talking about.
I like alot of what you've started so far on your project, but you haven't posted any updates in quite some time. How soon do the think it'll be before your finished with all the attacks and you can continuing on your other stuff? It looks really nice so far! Way better than anything I'm doing.

ThatIdahoGuy
Whether or not I continue, sort of depends on what's going on with SaturnFrost. If his project isn't getting continued anytime soon, then simply because I'm impatient and want a Link soon, I may continue editing more of the other one. But if anything, his might be the one to go to if you're wanting real good sprites for Link. But if I get done editing all the sprites, I'd be more than happy to lend them over for a much better project than the Link that NapoleonJonamite & KBN22 came out with. No disrespect to the creators, but some things about the character I can't fix that kind of annoy me. For example when you throw a bomb with their Link, there's no real sound for the explosion. I'd edit this too, but I really don't understand how to fix sounds and all that jazz for characters. So if I finish them all, then yes I'm completely okay with you using them in another project. :)

Dude, I am NapoleonJonamite. KBN22 was mentioned as he did some of the edits of Ax's before I decided to give Link some work.

I've been concerned about how the sprites came out in the beginning as people had basically considered him a bad Hayato edit. I've been working on stuff here and there, and just forgot to edit/fix some of the sound issues that were brought up. If you can provide the sprites, I'll work on the rest.

Holy crap lol my bad dude! Wow that's legitimately suprising! Anyway  yeah sure I don't mind putting some work in it for you guys. It'd be a pleasure, really. Ever since we first downloaded your Link, I've been real happy to have one similar to the one from OOT but the sprites always came off as a slight disruption. But I don't mind giving a go at it myself. Kinda confused on what everyone's mad about with Link's legs though. Everyone's saying they look similar to Hayato's, but I'm not sure if they mean the boots or the leggings. :S

Both. The boots don't look like they are of the same style that Link has had in any of his incarnations, and the leggings/pants looked lazily edited from Hayato's legs.

Sheesh, I can see why nobody's taken the time to do this. All the tedious slight detailing. It's kinda sorta specific. :stars: Of course I'm also just plain lazy too so.. :grin3:
Anyway I've done some other things with Link too, like linked alot of his attack patterns to make them connect with his slashes. As soon as I discover how to upload animations on here, I'll show you.

Here's what I'm talking about. I've yet to edit the sleeves and such on these sprites, but what do you think about the effect editing?

I will admit, the effects for the sword swing here look way better than what I had to begin with (Mostly because I was stuck with Ax's originals). I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Well Ive gotten the Light and medium standing attacks done so far. Been doing other projects to keep my ideas fresh lately. Though alot of the sprites done in my project so far are AxKing edits, the attacks are near scratch .So dont let my progress determine whether you do your project. If you want a quality (sprite and gameplay) Link thats been released, try KingCharz and Chaos Dantes Link.

Hmm, the spritework isn't bad. Could maybe use some touch ups, but I'm no sprite artist soo.. I'll have to download him and check him out.

Thanks alot, It'll be real annoying to connect all of his attacks, but I'll give it a try. I'm also hoping to equip him with his shield on alot more of his attacks, if that's alright with you.
Here's my go at editing the legs.

It's a real hassle taking the time to edit all this, especially considering the number of sprites, but in a way I'm really happy to be able to actually contribute to the Mugen community. Eversince I got an account, most of what I've done is linger around on the Z2 topics, constantly praising the creators for their work and making no real progress, other than most likely coming off as a bit of an annoyance. But now I feel as though I'm effectively contributing to this community, and offering something of possible enjoyment. So thinking about that, I'm really happy to be able to help you out with this char. :)
