So my mom got that new shiny laptop a few months ago and now the trial version of the antivirus has expired and she's pinning on me to install her a new one, because now her laptop is "unprotected", because let's face it, my mom is the kind of woman that clicks on anything that could be clicked and opens anything that could be opened.

I am looking for a FREE antivirus (not necessarily the best one) that suits this criteria:
- no trial or time expiring licenses
- no associated software/adware or popups like "get X program"
- is not really intrusive, basically not to display warnings or messages whenever she opens a folder or reads her email, as she calls me all the time that Windows asks her is she's sure to move a folder from one location to another, and I don't want an increase in the calls due to false positives.

I have no idea about antiviruses because I don't use them, I am more protected by a good firewall that monitors every packet that goes through my network and common sense when being online.

So, what would you guys recommend to install on her laptop?

Windows Defender is free for owners of original copies of Windows and is pretty good.
To quote Lt. Frank Drebin: "Cheer up, Ed. This is not goodbye. It's just I won't ever see you again."

All your MFG bandwidth is belong to me.

u cant put adblock free on her browser aswell, it helps to... reducing the popups to click :)

i recommend it to some friends of mine who click in all banners like free sex, win 10.000$  and stuff like that not knowing that may harm they're computers, and their problems reduced 50%
They still install virus dissimulated in programs like antivirus tough :/

This. Information Security is my field, and I've been using WD for a long time without any problems.

I can't find the article, but some time ago I read a comparison between WD, McAffee, Norton and some other av software and Windows Defender came 2nd.
