Here is something that I'm proud to share with you guys.

I'm currently working on a massive portrait project for Mugen in the form of matching and as-clear-as-I-can-get-quality Marvel VS Capcom 2 portraits. I say clear as I can get because Capcom's official artwork doesnt convert nicely as I index colors. There's TONS of cleaning up to do.

Simply converting portraits over the quick and easy way just wont cut it for me. I've also tried many other indexing options through Photoshop and Gimp, but the only option I have is going in manually and touching up each portrait one click at a time. The only filtering I do is Contrast Correction and Color Replacement to diminish color loss. I also index through "save for web and devices." I go through InfranView for a final step to make sure palette's recieve one last touch up, saving the original PNG as a PCX. Therefore, my portraits are at 72dpi with 240x280 resolution.

So, I figured I'd showcase my latest completed portrait: War Machine. This one in particular took a godforsaken 6 hours to touch up. I'm a certifiable detail nazi, but I clearly refuse to release sub-par work. Just converting everyhting over for the hell of it and call it work does not fly in my book. I also think Mugen deserves good art to look at as there are hardly any compilation rosters. And most portraits look rushed just to say "Hey, look at this!!"

Here is War Machine compared to After (On the left side) and Before (on the right side):

And here are the same two portraits on the select screen, with the same order (After on the left, before on the right):

I'd like to see what you guys have to say. Zoom in for closer inspection and you will see that I tried to make War Machine appear as clear as I could with as little color loss as possible all while paying attention to smooth looking edges and decent color temperature. Also, 72dpi is more welcoming to work with IMO as its less pixels to edit as opposed to 100+ dpi.

Feedback is welcome!!

There should be a Saikoro plugin for Photoshop.

Not bad although the loss of sketch lines on the face is kinda weird compared to everything else.

I like both versions but, can roll with the new versus the old. I forgot you dealt in this area, maybe you could do a few sets for my released screen pack. Looking good brotha.

Suggestions are certainly noted.

On the "smoothness" on his face: It's near impossible to get that sketched look in such a small area. I tried to get the sketched look to stick in that area, but that resulted in an odd muddled look that didn't suffice. Shrinking down a sketched image results in lots of color loss as well as plenty of pixels that are lost in translation.

Thanks Big Boss. I was looking at your portraits that were included with your screenpack and they are quite fantastic. My method of conversion is also completely different: If I followed your way, there would still be plenty of editing to do as color loss is rampant once you index colors. Fucking indexing!!

Ultimately, I'm going for the best visual clarity I can get. War Machine marks my 12th MvC2 piece. Hulk is next. I'm going to post a WIP thread once I make further progress.

Thanks guys!! Please continue to leave some feedback and tips. I'd love to hear what you have to say!!  ;D
