Early last month, it was revealed that GameSpy’s multiplayer servers will be shutting down on May 31, bringing the online chapters of many games to a close with them. Two fighting games, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition and Mortal Kombat, utilized these servers for netplay, and were in danger of having that aspect of their gameplay diminished by these developments.

While Iron Galaxy Studios mentioned that this issue was corrected in 3rd Strike courtesy of the title’s most recent patch, there was no word if NetherRealm Studios would be taking any steps to maintain Mortal Kombat.

Fortunately, it appears something will be done. After recently receiving a question about the news through Twitter, NetherRealm director Ed Boon has promised the title’s online play will continue to function after GameSpy’s servers shut down at the end of the month.
