That's a possibility, but I think it'll be more universal than that. 

In the trailer, while Scorpion had the sword at his hip, he never made use of it, but extensively abused joint-snapping counters, the X-Ray attack and the neck-snapping OTG harpoon at the end.  At the same time, Sub Zero avoided the bone breaking and focused on stage interactions, swinging from the trees, pulling weapons from the environment.  I'm tipping that's indicative of a Counter/Bonebreaker version, and a Stage Interactor/Weapon User version, or something along those lines.

At first I was like "....nah" but based in the stage interaction systems they built for Injustice, a higher level if stage interaction is likely. Might as well leverage the new tech and gameplay they developed for their latest entry in the franchise. Just makes good sense.

First things first: Quan Chi should not have all those souls from Earthrealm warriors. Simply put, They are from Earthrealm, and thus Shao Kahn had no domain over them, so he couldn't use them on his bargain with Quan Chi. Either that was just Quan Chi playing mind games with Raiden, or one big ass-pull.

Either way, I think the story of this new game will involve Shinnok starting his invasion, then Raiden gets desperate and goes on a quest to revive all fallen warriors, then Liu Kang steps in and decides to take over Raiden's place (which would fit with his arcade mode ending), then things get rough.

Or MK9 could've just been a dream or a vision Raiden has as his life flashes away at the beginning of the game and MK X will have a brand new cast of characters.

You're missing my point there.
And besides, that was just a CGI announce trailer... meaning it might not even relate to the final game at all... Human Sub-Zero and all.

And also, Scorpion and Subby are basically the Ryu and Ken of MK, they have to be in every game.

Scorpion can't really die, so probably it is going to be old Scorpion, and SubZero can be another man worthy of SubZero callsign (like "Snake" in MG), probably that masked SubZero from MK3 finally being the third Sub-Zero, from the fatality screen he also didn't have any scar on his face/ eyes, and somewhat looked younger

probably that masked SubZero from MK3 finally being the third Sub-Zero

That was the same Sub Zero as the one from MK1 (Who later becomes Noob Saibot), not another character. His presence in UMK3 was just as a bonus character (Kind of like memories of who Noob Saibot was before becoming that).

yea, umk3 was their way of bringing all the ninjas back male and female since they were replaced by cyborgs (bar maskless sub) they even made more ninjas

also, I totally read nevetsea's post thinking it said unmasked smh, i need my glasses

It would be, but they did it before with Deception. And with Mortal Kombat 3 before UMK3, kinda. The game only has about half the cast of MK2.

They've done that with most of their games without counting the "everybody vs everybody" ones that brought back the entire roster up to that point (Basically Trilogy and Armageddon).

The thing is that this kind of stuff no longer happens in fighting games, much less in games where the devs try to create a more legit competitive fighting game (MK9 is probably the most legit fighting game in the entire franchise and the only one a serious FG tournament would hold while the others are more "for fun", even back when they were released). Ditching most of your cast in a FG sequel is something more of the 90's than nowadays.

The last game to bring back every character from their respective franchise was Tekken in TTT2. Which I thought was pulled off okay, I didn't have any major gripes with it (of course, that's all my opinion though. I know some people didn't like the game.)

The typical strategy would be to introduce many new characters in the next game and have again a "Dream-match" game after that one which brings back the old characters

I just pre-ordered my copy of MKX at Gamestop, and they gave me this poster to go with it.

Eh... cool, but it looks a little bland. Fuck it at least it'll look cool next to my Batman posters.
