So it looks like Cartoon Network is attempting to appeal to more viewers with varied material through Adult Swim. This time, they have gone the completely obscure route with this show called Mr. Pickles. It's about a dog that's apparently evil since he speaks in demonic tongue, draws pentagrams, and maims people so that he could wear their limbs.

I'm not making this stuff up.

While I'm open and receptive to watching new stuff, I'm not sure if I'm laughing out of genuine humor or shock value. The Pilot can be seen here as it's totally NSFW. Also, there's an article from SDCC about how ideas are tossed around between it's creators and how it grew into this. While they can't show defecating, they can show... beheading and endtrails... yeah... I'd comment more on the link but I only skimmed through it.

well I was watching the beginning of the pilot and compared to some other stuff it isnt that bad it is even funny from time to time anyway im more curious about all the comment in the video

I've barely seen Metalocalypse. But I have watched quite a bit of Aqua Teen. I do dabble from time to time, but you are correct: I don't have much Adult Swim viewing under my belt. If this is the angle/humor/content they are aiming for, that's fine. But some of the humor in Mr. Pickles here seems a little pointless as if they are seeing how far they can push boundaries. See the kitchen scene at about 6 minutes. Yeah.

Some jokes are fine (Illegal Alien!!), but others (the content's of the crack lady/salesperson or the sheriff and strip club) are a little tasteless even though they are somewhat laugh inducing.

I'm about 60% through the pilot as I type this. So far it's alright.

Ah, I see where you guys are coming from now.

While my reactions aren't *gasp* they did that!? I'm still on the fence about what reaction the humor is going to gather. I've never seen Superjail or Metalocalypse either. I think I will at this point since you guys brought those shows up a few times. ;D

My immediate reaction was that of disgust when I saw the commercials for the show at first. To me, it's worse than Super Jail. I don't know if it's just the art style or the character design or what, but everything about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Edit: I watched the pilot episode and it's just as bad. It's not funny or clever. It's just gross...

I'm not too sure what to think of it either. I ended up viewing it twice yesterday and I felt slightly disturbed afterwards. In my opinion, I find the humor a little too crass and boundary pushing. Don't get me wrong, there are some funny moments and dialogue in there, but those moments are surrounded by a lot of bizarre and somewhat tasteless instances.

Illegal Alien?? Mr. Pickles sniffing gasoline?? The dialogue at 6:00 during the kitchen scene?? Mr. Pickles obscure satanic murmuring?? Hilarious.

Having your way with a bear?? Wearing a little girl's face while taking photographs of a semi nude and older man man hanging upside down from a tree?? Um, that's kinda weird.

I'll watch out of curiosity but that's about it.

I've never seen anything more than a few clips of SuperJail. It's alright. I don't see what's so funny about it, but that's just me.

Yeah, but I mean even the humor feels like it's being pushed in my face instead of subtle. Like it's trying so hard to be funny, that's it's just pathetic. This is just my take on it. Also, I just had a disgusted look on my face throughout. That animation and art style is crude and nasty. The best looking character is Mr. Pickles... and he's the worst of them all. I miss the parodies of Robot Chicken. Now that's a good show that also has a gore and whatnot, but it's kinder I think. It's actually funny too.

Good points for sure, and I agree with you. Some of the humor is forced, that's for sure. I found myself laughing at the genuinely funny bits. As above, I got a solid chuckle when Mr. Pickles was sniffing gasoline. Something about that is hilarious.

I thought Rick and Morty was a fantastic example of being off the walls hilarious while not forcing humor down your throat. While a couple of episodes were merely OK (Rasing Gazorpazorp and The Pilot Episode) for the most part the writing was clever, solid and layered. It also had two or three storylines happening in parallel while working fluidly. That's how you do it.

That's a really good point. While I'm open minded about a lot of content found within shows, Mr. Pickles clearly isn't a cartoon for anyone younger than 14. There's so much crass and sick humor, it's kinda disturbing. I'm still on the fence about my final verdict.

I could also see this become a problem with uninformed parents getting their eyes on this. Hoo boy!!

Um... I think you're looking at it the wrong way here. Take the religious aspect out. What do you see? Gruesome images nonetheless.
