hey gamers, 2013 is coming to a close, so let's talk about our favorite game release of 2013. this thread isn't a poll or anything, it's just a place to talk about the game in 2013 you enjoyed the most. maybe throw in some honorable mentions as well. so here's my game of the year 2013

Fire Emblem Awakening for the Nintendo 3DS

i spent more time playing this game than any other game this year. it's an awesome strategy game with huge replay value. it helped revitalize fire emblem, one of my favorite franchises. good job, fire emblem awakening. you are a good game.
honorable mentions: super mario 3d world, metal gear rising, a link between worlds, the wonderful 101

now post your goty

Metal gear rising I guess. Had it's problems, but delivered in stylish and very fun action.

Did not actually play all that many new games. Eh.

Yeah, that works.

No witty quotes though.

SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD
I played this game a lot, it was so good that I went 8+ hours the DAY I got it. It was an absolute blast, not a single time did the smile leave my face whilst playing it. SMB3 was once up there as my favorite Mario game, not anymore. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario 64, and Sunshine, have been dethroned by this game. Probably the best 3D Mario and potentially the best Mario platformer overall, Super Mario 3D World was amazing. I loved how new the entire game was, no level was the same, the game throws small twists and homages at you at every turn, and it's just lovely. Worth buying a WiiU for, because you'll get 3D World and a good 2014 lineup.

Metal Gear Rising.

Honorable mention to ASB, sure 1.0-1.2 had a lot of problems but 1.04 feels more like a proper fighting game, and I'm biased. All that attention to detail is a plus, if only they could add a proper story mode, better netcode, a more stable framerate and sure, why not, 60fps (That last one doesn't bother me that much)... this could be one of my favorite fighting games ever.

Edit: Eh, more stages too for sure, but a sequel can fix that.

Hmm...

It is a choice between Fire Emblem: Awakening (marvelous game, no doubt), Shin Megami Tensei IV (the first time I actually found myself met with a challenging game), and Pokemon X (Pokemon games are favorites and this one is fun).

All are good games.

I always have a hard time picking out a single favorite so I'm just going to rattle off a few of the most memorable titles from this year for me.

The Cave - Double Fine remains, in my opinion the single best studio in the business in terms of creating fully realized game worlds and amazing aesthetic.  A small handful of technical hiccups aside, it's got some incredibly addictive gameplay that falls halfway between adventure games and puzzle platformers and a really unique method of weaving the narrative directly into the gameplay.  Absolutely worth checking out if you haven't already.

Bioshock Infinite - The gameplay felt really nice and refined from the original, plus it had a really nice visual design and an engaging story, which is quite a rarity in first person shooters these days.  Also, it's a game that lets you drink a magic potion that makes you shoot crows out of your arm so you can use them to fight steampunk mecha George Washington with a railgun.  And that's radical.

The Stanley Parable - It's a little odd lumping this in with the best games of the year, because it's barely a game at all.  Literally the only mechanics are moving your character, and choosing which hallways to walk down.  But I can honestly say I have never been more engrossed by a game's narrative.  You can complete an entire run-through start to finish in about twenty minutes, but you're going to want to start again the second you finish.  It makes a multitude of statements of the nature of narrative in video games, the illusion of choice, and the role of the player in all of this.  The game world is constantly rearranging itself based on the actions you choose to take, at times even leveraging its own existence as a video game as a gameplay mechanic, and eventually forces you to start thinking not only in terms of the in-game controls and physics, but also in terms of yourself, the actual player sitting in front of your computer playing the game.

Basically, if you haven't played The Stanley Parable, go fucking play The Stanley Parable.

It's probably also worth mentioning that I got Animal Crossing New Leaf a week after launch and have been playing it religiously every day since.

I didn't do too much new this year.  Lotta baklogged games I just had sitting around that needed finishing.

Either BioShock Infinite or Assassin's Creed IV for me.  Neither were perfect, but they sure were fun, and had some great stories.  Left some things to be desired in both of them....but do what they set out to do pretty well.

Honorable mention to Tomb Raider, I guess.  Haven't played it yet, but looks great, sounds amazing, hear good reviews on it.  And because it's Tomb Raider.

Let's rename it the "Mugenguild's Obscure Game That's Recommended Award"!

I also think overall the game of the year is The Last of Us. Though arguments can be made for Bioshock Infinite and A Link Between Worlds. I think the only reason I don't give A Link Between Worlds the game of the year is because it doesn't quite have it's own identity.

EDIT: I have made a terrible mistake omitting AC4 in my honorable mention category. It should have been AC3 in the first place though.

I am having a hard time picking between Super Mario 3D World and Dragon's Crown, actually.
Both are entirely too fun.

  • does this look like the face of mercy?
i always have a hard time answering those things.

Ive played a lot of games, I have a lot of games on the backlog to play

Im gonna go with Guacamelee as the one that left a lasting impression.  What a sweet ass vectorized metroidvania.  I cant remember the last time I played a game that was this hard. It gets easier as you get more skills but some of those jumping segments are a nightmare.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance because RULES OF NATURE and also because I finally finished playing the DLCs this weekend. DAMN SON! Sam's story made me love the game even more (the battle with Armstrong was INTENSE as shit again). And DMK was right, the Bladewolf campain is a hoot, loved the platforming and sidescrolling missions ... it felt like I was playing Mario 3, but with a Robot Wolf with a chainsaw.

Honorable mention to The Last of Us and/or Dragon's Crown. So damn well made.

The Last of Us for me. I'm not going to elaborate on why, I simply enjoyed that game more than anything this year.

Honorable mentions: Metal Gear Rising: R, A Link Between worlds, Ni No Kuni. I still have to finish the last one.
