What do you guys think about MUGEN packs that are on torrents?  Is this ok so long it's not being sold?

http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1726394/13782344/

Also, how does copyright come into play (besides Reus Dragonclaw)?  If Im not mistaken, a lot of the characters are based off of the likeness of companies images, therefore even if you make the edit, it still belongs to the company?  Not sure, I just read that somewhere.

It's stupid. Not only do you get outdated creations which may have bugs that have since been fixed, but you get a lot of shitty creations along with it. It's better to make your own MUGEN select and DL stuff you want to try/use.

I agree.  I remember I tried one and it had a bunch of useless Transformers characters along with AOF1 guys with jacked up palettes.  The link to the torrent I provided proves the point.  My question is though, is it looked down upon for people to share the packs that they put together on the net with other people?

I guess they're easier to start with than downloading one thing at a time, and Mugen torrents are free distribution of something that's free either way so I don't see the (legal) problem.  Like Jesuszilla said, though, handpicking your favourite stuff is where it's at.

And there are a lot of original characters, not just Dragon Claw.
Use anything you want from my works.  If you need to contact me use email, not private messages.

I think it's better to download one fo these packs, see what can mugen do and then start personalizing.

Yeah, and play as God/Evil/Orochi characters, call Mugen "broken", then delete it.

I downloaded a mugen torrent once (well. The same one twice, before I knew where to get N64Mario's Zero).

I deleted all but 2-3 characters out of 200, as well as the screenpack, and kept the stages ( most of which I've also deleted later).

Actually, there was another torrent I downloaded... I just remembered.

I deleted it all.

In short, I'd rather handpick them all.

I don't get packs and these shitty full games. When I started I seen a cool ryu on Youtube and said holy fuck I want to play that. So I downloaded P.O.T.S Ryu and was freaking blown away.

So then I started checking the shit on esnips.

That shit was so bad that I thought that only P.O.T.S made good charcters. Then I found some good stuff of RS. For the longest time I had maybe 15 characters max because good characters are hard to find when you start out.

So these torrents just make people run away from Mugen because their first impressions of it are, "What a bunch of buggy shit."

The best way to go would be a really small torrent with some expandability put in. Say you took 1-2 characters from various points in the mugen world. It wouldn't be a balanced game by any means but if you had a pack with some of the really popular stuff out there (the evil duo for eg) but only about 8 of them in a screenpack designed for 60. People could enjoy what they had, but realise there was far more they could add. The big issue with torrents it's it's always

"Look what i has collected"

Bad as displaying your roster on youtube. Now, a small selection of best would be a decent torrent. That means an accurate character, an original, a chibi, an existing but custom character and trying for a decent spread of games as well.

I don't like the idea. To me it is just like warehousing. And there is the problem with private characters getting released without ever having been authorized.
Also I would rather know the sources for everything I download. It is simply too easy to put malware in a torrent or hide a trojan in the winmugen exe. It is better to get your data from reputable sites; like that of a creator. And of course checking good sites like MG! ;)

I only downloaded the torrents because I hoped I'd find something good. I had already started my own mugen.

years ago there was an idea of making a "community approved" mugen torrent that included a screenpack, several stages and several characters that weren't broken

that idea got nowhere

Some of us wanted it done. We just didn't want to have to go to any effort to actually do it  ;P

meh a mugen pack is a mugen pack, if the creator doesnt care then i dont care, but the point is when creators do care, others dont, then it becomes a bloody mess and im usually a broken record about that stuff, but as of now i dont care anymore, AS LONG AS THEY LEAVE MY KIRBY ALONE

Well I had mugen a few years back that I made from the ground up (of other peoples characters of course) and it was sweet.  Of course, like many of you, I went in and out of the MUGEN scene and always had to start again from the bottom.  Anywho, when I picked it back up again (like last year or 2 years ago) I started off with the 800 characters EVE pack.  Was great but most of the characters were horrendous.  That being said, almost 99% (not really sure if I erased 100%) of the characters are gone but I kept the screen pack and the stages.  I now just DL the torrents strictly for stages (Im at 561 right now).  Characters suck and MFG is the only place to get good quality characters.  Who the hell wants Optimus Prime in their set when they have the likes of Street Fighter? Thats one thing thats terrible with the torrents, no consistency.
