Need Advice on Choosing Character Versions

As my Mugen collection grows I'm finding it difficult to compare multiple chars and decide on the best version(s) to use. Some differences are obvious yet many seem identical except for the creator. I'm in desperate need of some guidelines for gauging quality. Here are some questions to get the ball rolling:

  • Is a character with a newer creation date always better?
  • Is a character that is 1.0 compatible always preferable?
  • Are there creators that are so good their versions are always preferable over others? Similarly bad creators?
  • Are the creators on the Mugen Fighters Guild (listed behind the char name) by newest to oldest or best to worst etc?
  • Is there any other database(s) that rank creators versions of chars?
  • Is there something specific I can look for in Fighter Factory to judge a character, palettes, states, code etc?
  • Is there something specific I can look for in gameplay testing to gauge a chars quality, moves, animation etc?
  • Insert your other criteria here.

Apologize if this has been covered before, I searched the forum and didn't find anything.

It depends, some chars made by multiple creators might have different gameplay than the other.
what kind of chars do you like playing with?

Hi, thanks for your suggestions, I'll check those out more. I have stuff from Infinity, Sean Alty, Cybaster, Devine Wolf and like their stuff a lot. I like playing a wide variety, anime, super hero, trad fighters.  I currently have about 50Gb worth of Mugen stuff including many complete games with characters to pull from.

Here's an example of my problem, I have downloaded complete games for DC vs MarvelV1.0, M.U.G.E.N MARVEL VS DC, MvsC2, Super Heroes M.U.G.E.N and MSH-Melee so I have 5 versions of Dr. Doom to choose from for my personal screenpack. A quick look at the def files shows the authors as Juan Carlos and Dr Doom... 

DC vs MarvelV1.0 - Author: Juan Carlos 04.14.2001
M.U.G.E.N MARVEL VS DC - Author: DrDoom 11.25.08
MvsC2 - Author: Juan Carlos 03.23.2008
Super Heroes M.U.G.E.N - Juan Carlos 03.23.2008
MSH-Melee - Juan Carlos 03.23.2008

Opening them in Fighter Factory I notice that some have a different number of palettes and differing states and sprites even though they are from Juan Carlos on the same date. Testing them doesn't reveal immediately noticeable differences. Looking on The Fighters Guild it lists Dr. Doom creators as: Carnificina, Whitemagic2002, Juan Carlos, Juan Carlos + Ta-chan so I could hunt down the other authors versions if they are better. Then I also ran across another version by Kamekaze that is a 1.0 version with a slightly different intro animation.

See the confusion? If I just go with what I have how do I determine the 'best' one. Do I bother hunting down versions from other creators to see if they are better? If so, how do I know they are better or even how they differ?

Maybe I'm overthinking this a bit. :)

It really just depends on personal preference, if you like something, play with it.

1. Usually, yes.
2. That's really subjective. Preference varies in each person. I can't tell you what you prefer. Only you can do that.
Usually characters that are developed with 1.0 in mind, have new features that Winmugen doesn't have.
3. Yes. But that's also a bit subjective.
4. I don't understand the question. Do you mean here in the forum? If they're listed by newest to oldest and best to worst? Are you just refering to the authors or the content as well?
5. No, I don't think so. Databases usually only tell you where to find the characters, they don't have reviews or rankings and such.
6. I don't have enough experience to answer this question.

In regards to your last question and other criteria, the best advice IMO I can give you, is to play some fighting games you like so you can get a better grasp on how fighting game mechanics work and how to evaluate a character objectively. It can quickly help you pick your favorite characters if you want to decide which ones you think are of better quality overall.

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding #4, the creators listed after the char names don't seem to be alphabetical for instance: Qkrtkf!(MSH), Whitemagic2002(MSH), Sunboy(MSH), Cherry, Motomachi(XCOTA) and so I was wondering if they are listed oldest to newest or if it's just random. I agree that playing many different characters helps though it seems some of the differences are very subtle and hard to examine without a lot of play time.

The characters you want or choose to try are based on your judgement the only advice i offer....give 'em a try! you'll never know what you'll like!

Im a fanatic on searching for something....rare, exotic, original and hey edits even turn out great sometimes! Noctis's Squall is awesome and Infinite's Cloud certainly caught my attention. *There both edits from Seanalty's Squall and Yamakichis Cloud*

I even hunt around oftenly for updates or new stuff made by the authors mentioned above or even some i've never heard of before. I was amazed by what i even found in old Mugen sites that are barely mentioned anymore and heck even surf around on other forums *in completely different languages* If you can't make up your mind try giving things a look, watch some Mugen Videos with characters you know or don't know. The internet has lots of Goodies for M.U.G.E.N. out there. So go find 'em! You'd be surprised.
