I wanna rip a character from a game, so I got the rom, and an emulator. But... I try to filter out everything except the character, but the pic looks real crappy. any tips for ripping sprites?

Yo, Zizzdude!

I'll try to help you a bit. ;)

What emulator are you using? Does it have a way of taking screenshots?

All emulators should have a way of taking screenshots.

Pause>step frame>tools>OAM viewer, you have to piece the sprites together but they're ALWAYS completely clean rips. No dust clouds or BG elements or the previous frame showing partially drawn over the new one which is what bugs me.

Hmm...

Cyanide's right; screenshots should always come out clean.

Here's a screenshot from Kirby And The Amazing Mirror:

Does your screenshot quality look like this?

The game you're ripping from, is it only for the Game Boy Advance?

Well, the person I know that can help you best would be Cyanide-senpai.

He created a Kirby using sprites that look like they came from the Game Boy Advance games.

Ask him for help!

Disable all layers and find a nice clear bit of screen. I recommend heading for carrot castle's first screen via mirrors from that main room. It's got very little in the BG and it goes to the pink shade.

Most of my ripping was sheets from spriters resource to be honest. Pre ripped sprites made things easier. I ripped some on my own using the OAM viewer (as i said) when the FX got in the way.

Get AnimGet. It takes a screenshot of the screen every ten milliseconds and compares it to the last one made. If something changed, it keeps it. If it's the same, it deletes it.

This in combination with the layer disabling function makes ripping easy.

If you do that, be in 1x scale with no filters on. It also has the problem of jamming the dustclouds and shit on the sprites.

1x scale? What's bad about that?

Dustclouds? Ah, the effects. Hmm... Good point...

I had mine on 2x when i used animget, it gives you a blurry jpgish sprite. 1x keeps it clean. Then i found i had FX embedded so i just went for OAM, it's a bit more time consuming but like i say the rips are ALWAYS clean.

Wouldn't it just be better to rescale the sprites in Fighter Factory or something?  :suttrox:

Indeed, then i could have a small blurry jpgish sprite rather than a big one. Excellent trade.

  • Somebody PM when Caddie is no longer a mod.
Something else that you need to download is gimp. With gimp you can select the image you want out of a screenshot. Unlike paint which only lets you use a square to select with you can select by color or shape in gimp. So if you are ripping from something that doesnt have layers then bring out the gimp.

animeGet sounds kinda cool. you think it'll work on Visual Boy Advanced?

It works. I've ripped several Sonic Advance related things before.
