Debates have to be won, so it should be turned into a contest and voted on.
This could be a lot of fun to read.

No votes. Debates are all about arguments and counter-arguments.

if you can't counter something properly, you lose. simple as that.

This reminds me of the time Christians removed penises from statues because they were offended. If you are offended, don't look or read.

totally agree...
not to sound rude... but I have seen that kind of attitude of some people here (in other topics)... so if you think you aren't going to learn (since I learn a lot), discuss, debate or simply laught...then not read... simple as that...

to be honest, the only thing I think is necesary is to avoid flamewars, but we can handle that...

IMO, just leave your religion at home, it's a personal matter, and one's point of view of certain religion based of what he knows, might not be the case at all to the same religion in the different parts of the world.

Its better to keep the religion thing at home. Its better not to try imposing your views, Christian, Islamic, Atheist etc., on others. That way, we keep the flame wars down and the drama and the butthurt out of here.

We already have enough butthurt in the release section already...

I made this sig. :ninja:

Forbidding the discussion of a topic is a bad idea IMO, since it can eventually escalate to more matters (religion today, LGBT stuff later, politics later still) until things degenerate into snipes only implying these topics in threads about whatever's still allowed because there's no other way to bring those up.

The problem is with how people handle these topics, especially the staff, since if they get out of line with mocking comments or other disproportionate reactions to views they're not to ofond of - moderation begins with a moderate attitude IMO, and if the staff fails at that, others tend to follow ("behaviour rubs off").

Let the other person save face.

The Debate section seems like a decent idea until one considers that many discussions start with posted news, and those threads only turn into debates later on. I really don't see the staff bothering to split threads at the points where their focus changes from news comment to debate.

@Shamrock
Your attitude towards this thread and religion is deplorable. You have been given the privledge as a mod, yet its seems like you enjoy abusing that power and offending users in the process with a "I don't give a shit" attitude. Not once have I seen you own up to your actions and take responsibility.

Can you give me an example of him "abusing his power"  as a moderator as a result of his religious (or lack of) beliefs?

and iced does the same with furries and titiln does the same with 4chan and tempest does the same with dumb people.

you're only zeroing  in on shamrock because he offended you personally i think :-\

and if your definition of power abuse is banning people a little too quickly(let's face it they'd probably be banned later anyway) then yeah he's a power abuser!!!!

Almost took the bait. And no, I wasn't talking about Shamrock banning people without debate, go talk to JZ and Nnaajj about that.

Im talking about Shamrock being a role model for other users and clearly he is not demonstrating that. In my eyes, if your a mod, your a mod to keep the peace, not the one to instigate problems and try to offend users. If you hadn't noticed, people take religion very seriously.

As for Titiln on 4chan, Tempest on people who don't read threads, and Iced on furries. How is that even related? Next, you want to come talk to me about how pedophiles are being persucuted because they hold a special love with children and nobody happens to understand?

Come on Momo...

Does Shamrock break the rules?  If no, then he is a "role model" enough.

Quite honestly, I dont see what makes your agenda special.  Why should only Shamrock be all touchy feely/PC when it comes to only religion topics?  Either all staff are "PC" don't give an opinion when it comes to all topics, or  it should go on like it is now; staff are allowed to give their opinion...NO MATTER HOW UNPOPULAR OR OFFENSIVE TO SOME PEOPLE... as long as they dont break the rules or use it to influence how they moderate.

And the rules say
Quote
•Be nice, and treat the other users with respect. Behavior rubs off.

Being polite does not necessitate agreement in all matters.  You can disagree vehemently with a claim brought forth by somebody else and start a discussion about this point.

Fencing back and forth over a matter and evaluating arguments from all sides can be good training and healthy—but it requires a certain detachment and that you take the time to type an actual counter-argument that has a relation to the statements of the other side's position . . . and that you actually read and respond to what they have said, and not just rant in the general direction of their user profile starting with the creation of the universe until you run out of words.

An arguement can be made that Shamrock's abrasive  style of writing isn't exactly nice or showing respect, but  that can be said for other staff as well as a whole lot of other people around here.  Shamrock should not be singled out.

okay im cool with that, just didn't get your motivation at first :P

but the thing is like i said, if the staff does this for shamrock, they'd have to apply the same rules to ALL the staff. you can't just pick and choose :)

aka what mbh said in her third piece above.

Well, walt. You make a list of all the things we are allowed to talk about.

Then, make sure you get specific about everything like you did with "The Gays"

Then after you have told us what we are and are not allowed to discuss, we will make a list. We will combine that list into books and will put them together and give it a name. We will call it the bible.
