Urges consumers to buy in their region; says there’s a “possibility” games from other areas won’t work

Nintendo has spoken out over rumours that its upcoming 3DS handheld will be region-locked.

Last week MCV reported that 3DS games may only work on hardware bought from the same territory.

Nintendo still isn’t clear on whether this is entirely the case although it stressed the importance of buying games from the same region.

“There is the possibility that Nintendo 3DS software sold in one region will not function properly when running on 3DS hardware sold in another,” Nintendo said in a statement to Eurogamer.

“Nintendo has developed different versions of 3DS hardware to take into account different languages, age rating requirements and parental control functionality, as well as to ensure compliance with local laws in each region.

“Additionally, we want to ensure the best possible gaming experience for our users. Nintendo 3DS also offers network services specifically tailored for each region.

“Guidance will appear on every packaging of Nintendo 3DS hardware and the accompanying software. If you are in doubt, Nintendo recommends that you only purchase 3DS software in the region where purchased your 3DS system.”

The 3DS console will be available in three versions – Japanese, American and European/Australian. The handheld is set to hit shelves before the end of March

UPDATE: When asked by MCV whether all games would be region locked or just a select few, a Nintendo spokesperson said: "We have nothing else to add."
