How about the Tekken version for both games.
Don't get me wrong, I like steampunk Yoshimitsu.
It's just that he doesn't have as cool of a design as Tekken 3's Yoshi.

Yoshimitsu has like 6 kajillion-million-trillion costumes, why can't we just take another one outta those? OR BETTER YET, make new ones.
How about the Tekken version for both games.
If you thought that why did you suggest both in the first place?

If it boiled down to 1 Yoshimitsu.
Otherwise if they could have both, that'd be sweet.

Kinda like Bone Claw wolverine and wolverine in MVC2.

But Bone Claw Wolverine sucked ass, and Yoshimitsu in both forms does not.

Because out of his six kajillion-million-trillion costumes, there are two good ones that are iconic, instantly recognizable as Yoshimitsu.  You may as well ask for Ryu to turn up in one of his SF4 alternates.

Your argument isn't exactly very stable, Yoshimitsu has almost never worn the same costume twice except in Tekken 3 and TTT. (Tekken Advance was a port of T3 so I'm not gonna count it.) Why break the trend? It's fun seeing what he winds up in next.

Because this isn't a Tekken game, this is a Namco Vs Capcom game.  Crossover games are traditionally a tribute to the histories of both factions, nostalgia is a key selling point.  In CVS Benimaru didn't rock the tiger-print shirt he got in the later games, because it was a tribute to the history of rivalry between Capcom and SNK.  Bringing Yoshimitsu back in some gaudy unmemorable monstrosity of an outfit like the T6 one would damage a lot of that nostalgia value; you want to make him as true to the player's vision of Yoshimitsu as possible.  And (I'm going to go out on a limb here) when you think of Tekken's Yoshimitsu, you think of either this or this, and if you don't, frankly you're either new to the series or have terrible aesthetic taste.

That's some good arguing right there.
Although I definitely prefer Tekken 3 yoshimitsu.
It's just cool with his simple body structure with that skull head of his.

And that lightsaber.

Mind you it'll probably be a moot point for the Namco title anyway, what with (hopefully) character customization.  I envision a lot of trolling of fans of characters that don't make the cut; Bishamon armor, a Q mask for Yoshi or King...

Isn't the fact that he changes costumes nostalgia on it's own? His Tekken 1 and 2 costumes aren't even the same, and besides, Soul Calibur technically isn't a Tekken game and he still managed to look good in all 4 games not wearing his T3 costume. I see where you're coming from, the Tekken 3 costume is the most used, but that doesn't mean it has to be used more.

I actually didn't think of that, which is strange because I was just playing Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur 4 yesterday. :S

Not really.  Athena Asamiya changes costume in every game, they gave her her most recognizable outfit in CVS (also the one outfit she's appeared twice in).  And Soul Calibur is a different case, seeing as Tekken Yoshimitsu and Soul Cal Yoshimitsu are separate characters in their own right.

Except they're not.  Remember how the Soul games take place back in the 16th century?

That can be argued against, since you can change the VA's in SC2-4.

That's like saying Christopher Standish is the same person as Kit Walker, because they were both the Phantom in their time.  Or saying Dick Grayson is Jason Todd is Tim Drake is Stephanie Brown is Damian Wayne, because they were all Robins.  Besides, whether they're the same person under the mask or not is irrelevant; there's still a five century generation gap, straight up placing Tekken Yoshimitsu in the Soul setting would be the definition of 'out of place'.  Reinventing the character concept for Soul Calibur had nothing to do with the arbitrary character redesign he gets every Tekken game.
