How do people make sprites for them? Does it just take a whole lot of skill with paint and/or photoshop? Or is there an easier way of doing this?

Flash can help if you need to resize lots. But mostly, practice practice practice.

Skill, Time, Patience, Tolerance — are your tickets to success here, I design FX rather than the chars themselves [ for now ], it is a tremendously tedious process that I personally n'joy

And overall, if you have to ask these kinda questions, like, "is there an easier way ?", you're probly not cut out for it, if you have the above 4 traits, and are willing to learn you should do great, good luck
