Photoshop Keeps Crashing

So I'm trying to do some sprtie editing, but everytime I open an image photoshop crashes... One outta 5 tries it will open the file, but then when I click a few more times, like convert the image to index color, then load a custom pallete, it will crash. I haven't had this problem before so I have no idea why it does this.

My system specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Intel pentium 4 processor
3.2 GHz
4GB RAM
320 GB Harddrive
85 GB Free Space
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x300 Series (Came installed with computer)

I tried pressing ctrl+shift+alt at the begining and reseting my preferences, but didn't do anything.

Make a new folder called "backup brushes". Cut and paste all your downloaded brushes to it.
