Probably not worth playing PC games on PS3.  You probably could run stuff from before 2000 at full speed.  I have yet to set up Linux, so I don't know which version is best.  Yellow Dog is probably going to be the easiest to setup, but it's based off of Red Hat / Fedora (yuk).  You can run emus for up to SNES...

A few things you have to realize is that PS3 is limited to 256 RAM, no GPU access, and everything has to be run from the processor.

Many people risk their lives everyday by having Mugen.

Basically, installing Linux on your PS3 converts it to a Pentium III ... I had Yellow Dog installed on mine some time before and it was a waste of time.

Up to SNES? Then why am I playing SFIII: 2nd Impact on my PS3 using SDLMAME?

Seriously, installing YDL was the best thing I did for my PS3, it gets way more usage now than my PS3 itself, sadly. Hell, at least you can play all MAME games and online playable SNES games with a wireless controller.

I will never understand the trend of emulating things on consoles... PC can do that and more.

Want TV video output? Buy a cheap Video Card with S-Video or DVI output.
Want wireless controllers? Buy a Bluetooth adapter for your PC and reuse your Sixaxis/Wiimote.

I've just recently bought a Samsung SyncMaster 2253 BW monitor thats capable of HDCP since my old one kicked the bucket, it doesn't display any picture but the power button still comes on, i think its fixable so im keeping it, but for now im sporting this Samsung which is probably the closes to HD im gonna get.

Question about hooking up my PS3 to my LCD.
I got the DVI to HDMI Cable down but how do i get audio output when i do that?

Playing them on a TV/controller/sofa/the works is still more fun, at least to me anyway. But then again I didn't really pay for those Dreamcast rom discs.
Use anything you want from my works.  If you need to contact me use email, not private messages.

Having to go through that trouble for something you use other than just playing games, sucks in my opinion. Consoles = meant to play games, so emulation on a console is pretty much second nature for me. Not to mention it feels more nostalgic than sitting in front of a monitor like a loser. Plus, quality sucks ass using s-video and I'm not gonna spend extra money on a bluetooth adapter when the PS3 can do it out of the box. Also, it's easier to lug around a console than a whole damn PC. I wouldn't drag a laptop everywhere, solely to play games.

@Jason, to get audio output, you just use the standard composite a/v cables into your PS3 and plug in only the white and red audio plugs, while dvi to hdmi is plugged in also. PS3 gives you the option to select where to output the audio from, just use composite cables.
