Basically, people have favorite characters for different reasons and they tend to fall under 3 basic categories:

Aesthetics
EX: appearance, personality, popularity mannerisms/poses

Gameplay
EX: moveset, play-style, button commands

Effectiveness
EX: tiers, match-ups, strong moves/tools

How important are each of these to you and whatnot?

It's hard for me to separate the first two. If a fighter doesn't blend aesthetics and gameplay on a character level, it's usually doing it wrong?

For the most part, the characters I play are appealing to me, have a playstyle that suits me, and are at least mid-tier competitively.

There are always a few that I'd like to learn how to play but just can't wrap my fucking head around, but eh.

(One of these days, Jaycee, you and me, we'll figure this shit out)

isnt popularity itself a result ? Why would it influence the aesthetic of a character how popular it is?

Popularity should be in its own, but since it was a superficial thing that didn't affect a character's gameplay directly, I put it under aesthetics. Idk, I didn't want to make too many categories.

I'm kinda confused as to how I'm supposed to answer :P

Basically, why do you like certain characters.

while i choose them absed on looks first, I keep them based on gameplay; effectiveness is irrelevant for me.

In MUGEN - As long as they play well and don't glitch, I'm happy.

In Fighting Games - Visually appealing, and must offer a challenge to learn.

I can't really say I have a single formula for choosing characters...

I remember I started playing Bison back in Super Turbo bacause I wanted to drop shotos and the idea of using the badass boss was great. In other games I go straight for the play style, like in Guilty Gear, where I experimented with a lot of characters and I ended up using Axl because his mid-range game is really strong (I also use Anji because I like his moveset and autoguard attacks).

What I'm really sure of is that I'm not a tier whore :)

@walt: Have you seen the recent fad in the UMVC3 tournaments where each player have a character that can be banned from his team to force him to change strategy? I read an article about it and it seems really fun. It's sorta like the rule you had with your pals.

Nope, hadn't heard about it. But like, you can choose 3 characters, and chances are you don't know how to play with only those 3, so you pick your best trio, and you still have a fighting chance only using 2 of them.

Over here, we were playing for fun. Hearing the "Hadouken" voice clips 700 times during the course of an afternoon was nervewrecking. Besides, it was a new, GORGEOUS LOOKING game (at least for us) so, being the spritewhore that I am, I suggested that so we could cycle through the most sprites ;D

Are they still doing that? The fighting game depression seems to be a recurring event that takes place after evo where people dont play as hard as they usually do and lack alot of motivation to keep playing. People were getting un hyped about marvel so some wanted to try something different (I know fooblat enforced it at next level) they tried that stupid rule for a couple of weeklies to get some hype back. I always thought it was dumb and we never did it back in my scene. Now that the hype is back for marvel I doubt people will still be doing this. (I honestly forget this existed)

I generally pick characters that appeal to me visually and if they have combo potential that's cool too. I picked nova spencer and doom in ultimate because back in vanilla I remember being inspired by japanese players using spencer doom and had so much tech and combos that I wanted to try out for myself. Then I saw combofiend use nova and spencer and I figured if I combined the team it would be godlike. In third strike I always used shotos because I didn't really want to try anything new. Until oe came out, then I played with elena for a while till I noticed how bad she was no matter how hard I tried. I always had a pocket urien in oe so I just stayed with him after I dropped elena. In sf4 I always felt like ryu was the only character I could play properly at high level so I didn't try to play any other character seriously. I've been playing with sakura a lot only because she has some good matchups against characters that ryu can't deal with. I'm hoping to play with poisen or hugo when ultra drops. I got to test out hugo last weekend at nec...and I didn't like the way he was ported to the game from cross tekken. I wasn't able to do any combos or links, maybe I was just fucking up my timing? Who's knows (people were being dicks and playing seriously because they didn't want to get up). Can't wait to get the game so I can play test out hugo properly in training mode
I wouldn't consider that a infinite since you have to make your opponent bounce of the wall and if you do it on the wrong side of the stage the stage interaction would activate.

For me, it's aesthetics. I only play as generic karate characters, or characters I like.(AKA PSABR: Sackboy, SSB: Mario, etc) or the main character. I also never play as girls, mainly cause of the way they look, or their voice, or something.
Expect nothing, but remeber everything.+ I am tired. Future spot for Doraemon in MvC picture, the second I learn to create it. (Even further: Pepsiman for Mvc picture.) Insert random Doraemon anime .gif. (Also, Pac-Man Delta whaling on a MLP character .gif........) Now, Wipeout....... OTHER STUFF? Needs blue SSB 64 Mario in tornado .gif......... Add Super Mario Fighters 3 sprite here........ Also, now doing KFA stuff...

That's a strangle specific way of narrowing down what you like Doraemon.

Personally, I just go with whatever seems cool visually but usually settle down to what is the most fun to play. I don't tend to go for the most effective characters, since having fun playing is pretty much always more important then winning to me.

Yeah, that works.

No witty quotes though.

the order you asked the question is pretty much how I narrow it down to picking a character. first I go on the aesthetics on if the character looks nice, if I like how they look, I'll end up learning the character no matter. Second I turn to is if the character plays good for me. Each character is given different tools for the player to use. If these feel the most comfortable to use. then use it. the third choice is effectiveness which is a pretty big factor only in games that have awful balancing. but you're talking to the person who uses Ryu, Ken, and Gouki in MvC2. so i dunno.

If I play a fighting game where there is absolutely no appealing character, then I'll just pick the easiest character to win with.

If anyone is interested in playing on PSN or XBox Live. Pass a PM and i'll give my screen names. Niitris and I play pretty weekly. Very Fun.
I play almost everything except for Mortal Kombat, Injustice, Persona and UMVC3.

  • Woah, like what?
I used to pick all the fast or female characters (Vega/Claw, Chun-Li, Mai, Sonya, Andy), but as time has gone on, I tend to pick characters based on being either "not-shoto" or "underdog".

In SF4, I started and stuck with Rose, although I did pick up Makoto somewhat.

KOF, my team is usually made up of Andy, Robert and King (Brian if the game allows).

I do it by a sort of process of elimination.  Whenever I play a new fighting game, I try and use all of the characters at the same rate, gradually narrowing it down as I keep playing and gravitate towards the ones I feel the most comfortable using.  It's not so much about aesthetics or play style or popularity for me as much as it is settling into the character(s) I feel like I can use the best.

Number one important thing for me to find characters I like is their character. How they look and their personality and how it corresponds to their gameplay. It's what attracts to me characters, but if I can't get a handle for their gameplay I may stop using them. Number two is how they play, if they're fun to play as I'll use them. The least important thing for me is how high or low they are on any tier lists. Hell some of my mains include Sean, Hugo and Hakan just because of how fun they are.

This however is from someone who has been playing fighting games since the early 90s and has never been good at them.

For me, it goes down to the two things of a character's design and the character's playstyle. I sadly don't use characters with interesting designs if I kinda suck with said character (For example, Slayer from Guilty Gear).

I look for design first, gameplay style second. I've gotten used to completely alien playstyles just because I like the character's design.

But there is a limit. I at least want decent combos to go with them.

Design is important, but not a deal breaker.. I can tolerate most all characters; the only ones I seem to dislike are obnoxious looking characters who don't fit with whatever game they're in. I love the artistic work that goes into characters and how they're presented through their voices, poses, effects, moves, appearance, etc...

Gameplay is my highest priority... I prefer characters who can do a little bit of everything. I also tend to lean towards simple characters (which is odd because I like to complicate everyone in Mugen).

Effectiveness is probably the least important. As long as they have some good tools and isn't complete bottom tier, I try to make it work. I used to avoid top tiers but I'm learning to get over it.

Lessee...

- Character design is a big factor. If a character is designed and animated well, those are big pluses to me.
- Additionally, the design for the character should be simple and recognizable from a distance. Too many belts or fine details and I lose interest. Basically if your character doesn't stand out as a silhouette, it's boring to me.
- Quirky characters also interest me.
- I never play shotos. I will play them or their equivalents when I get the game to learn how to play, then never use them again.
- Gameplay isn't too much of a factor, because I'm of the school that if you're really dedicated to learning the ins and outs of one character, you will eventually be comfortable enough to play them and know how to use them to get out of certain situations.

A few examples of characters I main that fall in these categories include Mr. Jones and Pupa from ROTD, Olaf from Matrimelee, Dudley from Street Fighter, Raiden from KOFXIII, Khan in JJBA:Heritage for the Future, Akira Otoishi in JJBA:ASB (thanks to the 1.04 patch he's even more awesome than before), Faust in GGXX, and Peacock from Skullgirls.

It's a weird system, but so far it's worked out well for me.

  • What did the 5 fingers say to the face? SMAAACCCK!
I choose characters that usually offer a good mix of everything  and some that focus on certain factors like range and close combat ability. Character designs are a bonus for me but i like a good gameplay with them and some cool freedom in my combo chaining.  Interesting supers are always a must have and the more dramatic and effective the better.

I like Sol Badguy in Guilty Gear series cause he has a lot of setups and i can set things up the way i like in gameplay.
In Sf4 games i usually will role with Ryu as well cause he has all the tools i need and i Like Makoto cause she can be a beast at times but i want her to have a lil more freedom in her combos to chain better the way i like or wish them to be. Abel is my go to guy if i want to deal out punishment lol.

In Sf X Tekken my teams are Ryu/Cammy , Paul/Ryu , Poison/Asuka , Bryan/Jack , Ibuki/Raven , Abel/King and Lili/Chun li . I use others in mix but these thus far are my fav team ups i use the most as set partners. I still wish Makoto was in this game! arrrg!

Interesting comments thus far.

For me, I always found myself attracted to the somewhat obscure, different and cool looking character. Delving deeper into this, I always have loved the wild card, badass loner archtype  that tend to be a little crazy/oddball too. I'm also for augmentation, like Exo-Suits or Armour. General favorites include:

Yoshimitsu
Vega
Grey Fox as his eternally awesome Cyborg Ninja appearance
Solid Snake
Scorpion
Master Chief
Samus Aran
Wolverine
Darth Maul
Darth Nihilus
Darth Vader (especially Empire!!)
Boba Fett

All of these characters share those tough, mysterious loner type personalities. I think my favoritism of these characters speaks a lot about my personality/psychology!!

First: Looks/Personality, I share Sai's taste for obscure, loner chars. Also a bit sadist (Iori), or tough guys (K', Kazuya, Venom)
Second: Gameplay, fighting style and/or use of special powers, like Fire, ice, etc. I'm not a fan of grapplers except for Alex and King (Tekken), I LOVE samurais or sword users, Mitsurugi and Siegfried are my mains in SC, I also like Boxing and Tae Kwon Do, that makes my mains in Tekken Kazuya, Yoshimitsu, and Steve Fox.
Third: Commands, I suck at charge motions so that's why I don't use Ash Crimson too often (I know, it's weird)

So my mains would be people like, K', Terry Bogard, Iori Yagami, Kazuya Mishima, Steve Fox, Yoshimitsu, Siegfried, Mitsurugi, Alex, Dudley, etc.
Thanks Watta for the sig and avi.

My criteria is the character I like most. I don't mind if the gameplay of the characters I pick is different from each other (for example switching from a fast type to a grappler type) I just need to get used to it, and even if I'm bad at using it, I don't care. If I don't like the character, I won't use it, and that usually means personality, looks and how appealing its gameplay is. If the gameplay is interesting, but I don't like the character itself I won't use it. Of course, if the gameplay is not appealing at all, even if the character looks good I won't use it.

For example, I like the gameplay Litchi has in BB, but I don't like the character itself, so I don't use it. Same goes for Ragna, even though I do like how he is as character, I don't find his gameplay interesting at all even though it's easier to use, so I won't use it.

And what type do I prefer? Well, don't really have a preference there, it's just if I get a "Damn, I like this character" feeling then I probably will main it.

First: Looks/Personality, I share Sai's taste for obscure, loner chars. Also a bit sadist (Iori), or tough guys (K', Kazuya, Venom)
Second: Gameplay, fighting style and/or use of special powers, like Fire, ice, etc.

So my mains would be people like, K', Terry Bogard, Iori Yagami, Kazuya Mishima, Steve Fox, Yoshimitsu, Siegfried, Mitsurugi, Alex, Dudley, etc.

Great taste good sir!! I forgot about Heihachi and Kazuya. And Venom!! Also, Iori, Rugal, Geese and Joe are favorites from SNK. And Grant from Garou. His art is amazing in my eyes. Case in point:

I flipped my lid the first time I saw that.
All of your Mugen Portrait needs may be found HERE.

I'd like to report two robots on the MFG forums: One is EXShadow. The other is Saikoro.
There should be a Saikoro plugin for Photoshop.

I'm fine with charge/grapplers in fighters, but they are never my Mains or favs.
I also have to like their character. I like characters that are just damn cool like Dudley or Cody, or characters who's appearance or personality or something is likable, e.g Cammy, Robert.
I'm fine with both male and female characters, but for the female characters, I'll probably pick the prettier and more feminine pixel people over the uglier ones.

I normally like characters that are sort of fast, but not built around being fast at the exclusion of everything else; and that have been in a series a while, but aren't the most prominent or main character in a series.

Hwoarang and Hwang are pretty good examples of my ideal playstyle (though, fuck Yun-Seung).

That said, I main Astaroth in SC these days and I have absolutely no idea why he clicks for me so well because I don't like slow/bruiser type characters or grapplers at all normally. But he's deceptively fast and his reach/delay mindgames make me giggle.

Shhh I'm trying to kill someone's soul

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.
