I don't see anything about people being especially against it. Just that certain situations are more complicated or troublesome for various reasons.

Apparently this domestic partnership was the same thing under a different name that, in the first place, was here to say "you're not married, even if it's the same thing". So they were already married.

Except that not everyone that gets into a relationship like those wants to be married. Which is why a lot of straight people are also in them. With one of those you dont have to have a divorce to separate.
