Well, I was going to do Sub-Zero next, and i know he's more popular, but I just got a strong desire to work on CM Punk. I was torn on whether or not I'd actually make him after I made a .gif for Titiln's contest a while back, but the other day I just said "why not?" So, I started working on him and so far, he has a few animations done. I will mostly be using Benimaru, Joe, and maybe a couple of others for his animations. The sprites are 95% by me, his hands come from Joe. Anyway, here are the anims I have so far:



(Legs look a little long, I know, I may fix this or just chalk it up to him having a more exaggerated physique, longer legs making sense since he focuses on so many kicks and knee attacks)



I've obviously had to minimize his tattoos so he wouldn't end up a jumbled mess of multi-colored pixels, but I made sure some of his more important ones are represented (his Straightedge tattoo, Cobra logo, Pepsi logo). He has occassionally worn an elbow pad and now regularly wears a large amount of tape on his right elbow, so I took advantage of this to cover up more of his arm so some of his other arm tattoos could be avoided. I hope you don't blame me for that.

By the way, for those that don't know who he is, he is a professional wrestler currently in WWE. He's changed his look quite a bit recently, after I made the first .gif (he has shorter hair now and a giant chest tattoo), but much like my Solid Snake represents the character as seen in MGS1, my CM Punk will represent him the way he looked a couple of years ago as a face (he's a heel now). Here's a couple of pictures of CM Punk for those unfamiliar with him:

Here is his currently planned moveset, which is of course subject to change:

Special Moves

-Shining Wizard Combo - D,DF,F,K
   -Punk rushes towards his opponent. The actual run will act as an attack throw which can be blocked. If it connects on a standing opponent, he will step-up and knee them in the side of the head, and then drop down into a bulldog. If it connects on a crouching opponent, he will do the classic Muta Shining Wizard.

-Go 2 Sleep - F,DF,D,DB,B,P
   -A command grab. If it connects, Punk hoists his opponent over his head into a fireman's carry, then lifts them up and drops them forward, striking them in the head with a vicious knee attack on the way down. This is his current WWE Finisher.

-Muay Thai Knee - F,D,DF,K
   -This will be Punk's anti-air. It will be a fairly standard flying knee attack, ala Joe and Adon. I figure he needs a good anti-air and he since it's a 2-D fighting game, he doesn't have to adhere to realistic physics.

-Muay Thai Combination - D,DF,F,P, up to 4 times
   -Punk performs 4 attacks in a row. The first is an open-handed strike to the jaw, the second is a similar attack with the opposite arm, the third is a spinning back chop to the throat, and the last a nasty roundhouse kick to the side of the head.

Super Moves

-Super Go 2 Sleep - 360* + P
   -Punk grabs his opponent and delivers several alternating knees to the mid-section and face, before lifting his opponent up and performing a more powerful version of Go 2 Sleep.

-It's Clobberin' Time - D,DF,F,D,DF,F,P
   -Punk performs a flurry of martial arts strikes that ends with a flying Muay Thai Knee.

That's all I have planned for right now. I am open to suggestions for another special and another super. I'm trying to stay true to Punk's fighting style and move set, so keep that in mind. He obviously can't have some of his other signature moves, like Welcome to Chicago or Pepsi Plunge, since they involve double-arm underhooks, or his submission finisher Anaconda Vice, and thus couldn't really be done due to required sprite restrictions. I was considering a counter move that leads into a Tilt-a-Whirl backbreaker or Snap Powerslam, but I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think so far.

As a longtime Punk fan, I approve.

Why not take a look at his finishers/signatures on WWE All Stars for more move ideas?

Like his knee combo for kick throw. That'd work out perfectly.

FUCKING HELL YES.  I'm also a long time Punk fan (since ROH!) and I definitely approve.

A couple of personal suggestions , just my two cents.

-Anaconda Vice.  This could be another one or maybe a special.  You could have it be similar to Blue Mary or Gai's submissions where he tugs once or twice with crunching sounds.  I know you said it wasn't possible, but if you look at how certain characters do holds like this (particularly how Sakura and T Hawk have their grabs done) you can see that separate sprites of the characters arms are overlaid over the animation so that it looks like they are holding the opponent. 

-Maybe have his springboard clothesline as an overhead, or his suicide dive as something that works similar to Alex's dive from SF3.

-The tilt a whirl backbreaker should probably be a standard throw IMO.

-Have LOTS of envshake on the knee of the super GTS, it will make the move look much more brutal.  Just don't overdo it.

-I think it would be best if you made It's Clobberin' Time a ranbu type super, meaning have him rush to the opponent like Ryo before the move actually connects.  This would also open up more combo possibilities.

-This is probably kind of corny, but you could give him either a counter or projectile deflector where he holds up the straight edge arm cross and then strikes the opponent/deflects the projectile when triggered.

and other stuff....

-How about using the grunts from the WWE Smackdown vs Raw games for his sound fx?  I could probably get thim for you.

-For his intro, you could have him actually walk into the stage from the left of the screen with a snippet of This Fire Burns playing, or if you are concerned about copyright an instrumental cover.

-For one of his winposes you could have him pose while a clip of the crowd chanting "C-M-Punk!  C-M-Punk!" plays.

-Give him a special winpose against specific characters (Chin, Iron Man, all alcohol/drug using characters) where he goes into a shortened version of one of his rants.

-And of course, a winpose against certain female characters where he stands over them and says.....

-I would suggest giving him his "that was boring, you're not funny and nobody likes you" as a winpose against Dan, Shingo, Deadpool and other jokey characters, but you said you are shooting for face Punk.

-For his round 2 winpose, have him actually go over and pin his opponent, with the sound of the "1, 2, 3!" and the bell ringing as his music plays and a referee comes out to raise his arm.  I always thought this would be a cool idea for a winpose for any wrestling related character.


Just suggestions of course.  As a huge Punk fan I'm just glad you are actually doing it, I'll think of more ideas later if you're interested.

All i can say is give him alot of kicks Low kicks, High kicks, Mid kicks also give him a spinning back hand attack or back elbow attack and a drop kick. For his grab make him grab your head then knee you in the face then do a bulldog/face-crusher on him like he does in wrestling when he runs up to you in the corner and does that knee/bulldog combination move.

I'm looking forward to how CM Punk's gameplay turns out.  I've always wanted to see a real-life wrestler with such a sprite set in Mugen.  Including MC2's suggestion I have my own ideas too.

  • For his Super GTS, I find it better as a HCFx2 move rather than a 360 motion.  I know he's a wrestler and the style fits for the 360, but your call.
  • Seconding the intro suggestion, but as a special into with wrestling-class characters, even against S.H.A.D.E.s' Sabotage, Snow, and Adamas.
  • Give him an air throw similar to Guile or a special move that catches airborne opponents while jumping.
  • When I think about his moveset, I picture it similar to that of She-Hulk from MvC3 in terms of activation.  I feel he should have a move that puts him in a special standing position and he can either cancel out or perform a variety of special moves.  One button allows him to do a running grapple, the other creates a sliding kick, and the other has him do an aerial grapple.  Okay, maybe I see him Punk more of a technical type, but then again I'm just going places.
  • For It's Clobberin' Time, I would go for how Adon from SSFIV does it.  By default, he goes for the move as noted.  If the player holds the punch button, for example, after the last hit Punk attempts to grapple the opponent with any wrestling move of your choice.  Will miss when the opponent is caught airborne though.  Holding kick lets him do an overhead kick after the last hit, knocking the opponent down.  Just my thoughts.
  • Not really needed, but I might suggest a command move when he picks the opponent off the ground, much like Ragna from Blazblue.  Doesn't do any damage if done this way.
  • Give him an overhead command move F+MP.
  • For one of his winpose on the aformentioned wrestling character, have the announcer play "Here's your winner CM Punk!" with the BG music disabled while Punk's theme plays.
  • For Muay Thai Combination, assign a command to his kick.  What I mean is during the move strings (or after the first or second hit), pressing the kick makes him to a low sweep.
  • Will his FF (tap forward twice) be running or a short dash?


That's all from my thoughts.  Good luck on the character.

Hey, MC2, if you could possibly get me any CM Punk related sounds or nice clear voice clips, I'd really appreciate it. I don't know how difficult it is to get sounds like that though. I'd especially like a good clip of the announcer saying "Here's your winner, CM Punk!" like Kirishima suggested. I wasn't really thinking about his voice when I started making him, now I'm seeing the problems there.  :-\

I woulda said The Undertaker but thats just me...it woulda been cool to see him sacrifice Ken or Ryu on the awesome altar from his older days in the 90s....I dont know if youve played God of War Ghost of Sparta but Kratos has a charging move called Hyperion charge...he runs at target and tackles whoever is in his way...you have 3 options....light punch to the face....two hand club in the face or pick them up and throw them...it could be useful to do sumthin like it with CM punk...

On second thought, I think you should probably avoid in match voices, since wrestlers don't usually make fighting yells like martial artists (well except Triple H of course).  Maybe keep the voice clips for intro/taunt/win poses?

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update. I took a break from spriting, but I'm back at it and working on Punk again. I finished all of his gethits/required sprites, and made his first attack. I also revised his stance, and wanted to show it to you guys. It looks a bit less like Benimaru's now, and makes his legs look less feminine IMO. I placed the old one next to it for comparison.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to post an update.

I finished all of his standards (using the CvTW 4-button system) except for his Crouching HK/Sweep. Here's a .gif showcasing them all:



Just noticed his jumping punches are missing the stars on his trunks, but don't worry, that will be fixed.

Gotta finish his sweep and his run, then it's on to his specials. He's moving along quickly, and after this I'll be working on either Sub-Zero or Mr. X. People want Sub-Zero, but I really want to work on Mr. X, so we'll see which happens first.

Oh, sorry, yeah I got them. I can't believe I forgot to respond. But yeah, I appreciate those, I will try to put them to good use, especially the chant sounds. I'm wondering if I could some how get clips of his voice acting from the later SvR games, but I haven't seriously looked for them yet due to being so busy spriting. I might be able to get someone from VAA or VAC to do a decent impression of him, I dunno. Kind of stuck as far as his voice goes.

By the way here's a look at the palettes I made for him so far. Some are homages or inspired by real outfits he's worn, and some are just original palette ideas:

Hard at work, finished the animations and code for the SHining Wizard/Bulldog Combo, Muay Thai Knee, and GTS. Just need to finish up a few attacks and then it's all intros/taunts/win poses from there, which are going to be a bitch since I'll basically have to animate those myself without bases.

The Randy Savage attire was suggested because it was actually something Punk wore.

He was going to be facing the "wrong " way inevitably depending on what side of the screen he's on. i don't really think it matters in this case.

The heavily exaggerated GTS is a nice touch.  I was expecting it to look like normal but with a lot of envshake, but the way you did it was more befitting for a fighting game.

Yeah, I'm looking for more. I hope I can find generic male voice clips just to use for attack grunts and what not.

I think people probably think they lack toning, and they probably think the right thigh is too fat, I assume this because it was what I thought at first. But actually it's realistically sprited.

Looking forward to the final product, as the gameplay looks really nice. Too bad I'm not interested in wrestling, and thus have no idea who CM Punk is (I only watched WWF as a kid, at the time of Hulk Hogan, Bret the Hitman Heart, Lex Luger, younger Undertaker, etc.)

Those palettes look good, but I should let you know you'll probably have to redo them since I've decided to further color separate his kickpads. Here's a sprite with the palette on it so you can have at it. I didn't think anyone was going to be making any yet so I didn't say anything about the kickpad updates. I just realized that even though I swear I could picture it in my head, Punk hasn't ever really worn kickpads like the ones I gave him, so I decided to try to make them more accurate. I still didn't put the extra stars and designs on them because it would clutter his legs up, not to mention be even more work then color separating them this far into spriting. They still look like the ones he wore at first in WWE and better than the ones he had before, IMO. Anyway, here you go.

Anybody know of any male characters who have generic attack sounds (like grunts and strains and what not) that would sound close enough to Punk's voice? He's just so silent during fights now, and it bothers me. He really needs some fighting sounds, but just stuff like short sounds so it won't be so easy to tell that they're not him. I'm sure someone, somewhere has attack sounds that could pass as Punk's.

Yeah, I actually was a wrestler for about 3 years before I had to give it up.

Also, to all of you guys who are good with portraits, feel free to submit some. I'm not so great with them, myself. I may draw one and include it but it won't be the main one. If you convert a pic, try to make sure the picture is of him sporting the general look I used for him, as in goatee/sideburns, long hair, etc. Basically his 2006-2008 look.

If you want to make portraits, you can find perfect renders of wrestlers (and more actually) at this site.  Registration is required but it's a great resource to have for photoshop lovers.

But yeah, it will probably be 1.0 only, sorry. It really is time to switch guys.

Also, I've implemented the Anaconda Vice as a counter/reversal move. He has a high and a low version. I should warn you, it looks fine on normal sixed characters like Ryu and Squall, but it looks a bit strange on larger characters and chibi characters, but I hope you guys will just understand that it was an unusual move to implement in 2-D and that some weirdness will be inevitable.

I've also added a Suicide Dive that he can do, which means he can cancel the running start-up of the Shining Wizard in 2 ways, you can press LP to stop, or HP to do the Suicide Dive. I also made a small portrait and a few large portraits. I used the 2nd one GLB made (the one where he is raising one hand in front of him) since it matches the look I used the most, and I made a few of my own.

He's really close to release now guys, I'm just trying to find some more usable audio. Right now his intros and win poses consist of:

Intros
 -Crosses his arms to make the xXx pose, and says "I'm standing right in front of you, if you feel lucky."
 -On one knee, doing his Gladiator thing, then makes the "Go to sleep" gesture and stands up with his arms out. You hear a crowd chanting "CM Punk!"
 -On one knee, doing his Gladiator thing, checks his invisible watch before standing up and shouting "It's clobberin' time!" A brief clip of his WWE entrance music is playing during this.

Taunt
 -Punk does the "Go to sleep" gesture before holding his arms out to the side as if to say "it's over!"

Win Poses
 -Crosses his arms to do the xXx pose
 -Does a few martial arts attacks to the air before doing the "it's over" pose
 -Does a crouching version of the "Go to sleep" gesture
 -Runs up to his opponent on the ground, leans down over and pulls out a microphone and says to their face, "I AM drug free, I AM alcohol free, and I'm straightedge! And I'm better than you!" His theme music then hits. Little heelish but it works and is my favorite one. This is his win pose when he wins the match. The first three are for when he wins a round.

So anyway, this was just a general update to let you guys know what's up and to let you know he will be released very soon.

The wrist loosening could also be appropriately used as an intro in my opinion.

Also i'm very glad you found a way to implement the Anaconda Vice, your update sounds great. Hopefully you have some luck on the audio.

Yeah, to be honest, I tried animating the wrist loosening thing and it just wasn't looking good. All the small details with his hand wraps and his fingers all having to be consistent and look nice and everything, I just couldn't do it without a base. :-\

What characters have a fauxhawk? I can't really think of any, except maybe Seth from KoF but that seems pretty close to an actual mohawk. Also, I've been a CM Punk fan since his ROH days, and I can't think of the reference you're making off the top of my head.

Edit: Googling it led me to the recent video where he made fun of a fan in Austrailia. I remembered the "You have a vagina" and "homo" remarks he made, forgot about the fauxhawk part.

Palettes don't work that way. He has a SES palette that MC2 made, but it's the color scheme. You can't add clothes with palettes (unless you plan from the start and do some really complex palette tricks, but even then it's not really worth it in this case).  :S

Punk's having his AI worked on now, and will be released when it's done. This should be within the next day or two (hopefully). As has been the case recently, he will be 1.0 only, using the AI Level feature.

While I'm waiting on his AI, I have begun work on Mr. X. I'm going to post a WIP topic for him soon because I need some opinions and feedback for him ASAP. Scratch that, I see other people who have multiple WIPs just have one topic for them all, don't want to clutter up the board. So here's the progress for Mr. X:

I'm using mostly Maxima, Rugal, and Q as animation bases for him. His hands and feet are from Maxima, so I can't say his sprites are 100% by me this time. I've been in contact with Nestor about using Leon in Capcom vs. The World, and he may be interested in using Mr. X. Here's a couple of anims that are done so far:




Now, the feedback/opinions I need are on the following subjects:

Crouching - I have no idea what a character accurate crouch would look like for Mr. X. He doesn't seem the type to crouch, and when I picture him crouching, it either looks too weird for him or he's crouching like Hugo (by dropping to his knees). A friend of mine suggested I make him unable to crouch (like some SNK Bosses), and to make up for it, give him---

Super Armor - I will be looking for code help on this one. If he can't crouch, I wanted to give him a form of super armor like the big guys in Marvel games, where you have to hit him 2 or 3 times in a combo before he actually starts to reel from being hit (just like how he has to be shot several times in RE2 before he actually reacts to it).

Give me some ideas and opinions on this subject, I need help with it. I want to come up with something that is true to the character but is also balanced. Thanks for any help guys.

Concerning the character specific winquotes, I've been collecting a huge bunch of name triggers for Goku, I can give you the ones you need if you want (it's not a 100% complete list, since I don't have my Mugen archive HDD in New Zealand, but it's already quite big).

I woulda loved to see Colonel Volgin from MGS3 or The Boss fight Solid Snake. you could probly use Geeses head or Yamazaki. Volgin was a bitch specially with the Shagohod in his possession.  so was The Boss. idk i always prefered silent hill over resident evil. pyramid head rocks. i wanna see where this mr x goes though..i might even play some re to get myself familiar

I got an idea for Mr.X if your interested Sean Altly.

I was thinking that you could add an extra mode, from pressing S + any button during the select screen.

In this mode, after you defeat him, in the next round, he mutates into his second form and he gains some new moves.

I got the idea from RicePigeon's Cyber Naraku and I thought it would fit, since X does mutate in his final battle against Leon and Claire.

Would it work?

He was pretty much the main boss in Resident Evil 2, If i remember it correctly. He turned into a tyrant, which is Resident Evil 2's equivalent of the nemesis. I still have memories of trying to beat that fucking last part.... >_<

I'd honestly prefer he stays in this form. His look and attitude in this form is what makes me like him so much. Once he falls in the lava (or was it molten steel, can't remember) in RE2 and becomes all Tyrant-y he loses a lot of appeal to me. Plus, not gonna lie, that sounds a bit too advanced for me, code wise. I'm not sure if it would work either, since he'd have to share the same required sprites (I could use a bunch of hit overrides and make him unthrowable, but I don't know if I want to get that far into it).
Son, the last thing you'll realize you need is what you've already got.

Okay, I understand. I guess it would take longer then you'd want, I was only throwing in my two cents anyway. Still, It's pretty badass to see Mr. X in Mugen.

Just one more thing, is it possible to have Sherry in this character? Like she could constantly get behind the opponent trying to escape Mr. X and in his win pose he goes back chasing ater her?

That will be my last suggestion for this character if I'm bugging you.

Thanks Sean! By giving the link I started reading about Resident Evil and soon I'm into it! : D
Also I found this cool Hunk edit by your Solid Snake, released 5th of June by someone named wto38, Hope you gave him permission to use Snake tho, it's really cool, and I see he is making Jin Kazama by editing the good one of Kazuya of the one named Silver (something/forgot)

Can't wait to see more from Mr.X and the release of CM Punk.. to bad they are 1.0... you make me force to change bro  ;P

He was even planned to be playable in MVC3 until Capcom thought of him being to scary.

fine, character suggestion or not. does mrx jump at all? he sounds like the type who doesnt usually jump until 2nd form maybe. ive never played RE2 so I wouldnt know.

Does that really matter though? Obviously he's gonna make him jump, Snake never jumps in MGS either.

- I think his walk looks good except Mr. X barely moves his arms and legs that much.

- Mr. X was really slow in RE2 and only attacked fast when he was really close. Also when he was killed he would wobble and drop on his knees before hitting the floor (which IMO is a good animation for a chip damage KO).

- For the crouch, I haven't seen any footage of Mr. X crouching but IMO I think that if he crouched he would rest his arm on his knee kinda like K' does in his crouching animation. Atleast that's how I picture it anyway.

Just wanted to update you guys and let you know I've got some pretty fun plans coming up for Capcom vs The World. I'm currently working on the endings for SHADEs 2, and once those are done and the AI is finished, I can release the game and then fully turn my attention to CvTW (which should hopefully have it's own sub-forum soon). I will of course do updates and patches for SHADEs 2 as needed (I won't be ignoring it after it's done, I will address bugs and other such problems).

The big plans I have stem from the recent brouhaha involving Capcom and Ultimate MvC3. I'm not going to complain about Capcom or Megaman or anything like that, I'm just going to say one thing and I think it's perfectly valid: Polls were held at Capcom Unity regarding who fans would most like to see as DLC for MVC3. We now know that MVC3 will get no further DLC and we get UMVC3 instead. The part that bugs me is that while most of the characters Capcom chose to be in UMVC3 did show up on the poll results, they ignored the number one Capcom pick and the top three Marvel picks. Now, before anybody gets angry, yes I realize the following things:

1. It was a "DLC" poll, so those characters may still show up as DLC in the future, and--
2. Venom was not a possibility because Marvel did not include him on the list of characters Capcom could pout in the game (for whatever reason).

It still bugs me to some extent, though. So, with that in mind, and also keeping in mind that I can only justify spending the time and effort to fully sprite characters I really care about, I am going to be putting 4 polls up that will let you guys determine 8 characters that will make it onto the CVTW roster. The polls will be separated into 4 categories:

1. Capcom Character (Existing Sprites) - Capcom characters who already have sprites available
2. Capcom Character (New Sprites) - Capcom characters I would have to fully create sprites for
3. The World Character (Existing Sprites) - Characters from non-Capcom franchises that already have sprites I can use
4. The World Character (New Sprites) - Characters from non-Capcom franchises that I would have to fully create sprites for

The choices will be determined by me (I will choose characters I like enough to actually want to make sprites for), and you guys will vote on them. I have already determined the eligible characters. The top 2 in each category will make it into the game. I've already determined the lists for each category, but I will save them for when I can post the polls. I want to have fun with this, but I also want you guys to be able to choose who you'd like to see in the game the most.

I think having a pool of characters I actually would like to create for you guys and then letting you choose which to create is a fair, fun compromise (since I obviously can't create them all). I hope you guys like the idea, and I can't wait to set up the polls so you can vote. I may also make a preview sprite for each character in the New Sprites category so you can get a look at what I'd be making. Let me know what you think!

It's a fun idea. I like that you're getting everyone else involved and that you're keeping enough of an open mind to let them make some sort of decision. I'm quite antsy to know who we'll be able to vote for and what the possibilities are. You've got my attention with this one.

Mr X?? Dude.... Alongside Solid Snake and Rorschach, it looks like you have the same excellent tastes as I do in gaming, movies, and pop culture in general. Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid are top favorites of mine from the PlayStation era. Seeing Mr. X come to life by your hands makes the Gamer in me as giddy as a schoolgirl.

With your polling coming along, does that mean Mr. X will be placed on the backburner?? Hopefully not as he oozes style already. A few suggestions from the hardcore RE2 fan:

I say a super armor attribute would be perfectly fit for him. He moved gracefully, if not a little slow and lumbering. Armor would be perfect.

His basic walking movements should be slower yet his attacks should be fast with limited reach. Remember, his character was meant to be a stalker, so if he got in close he would be a menace. His RE2 rules shouldnt differ from his Mugen rules.

If everyone wants to see his true Tyrant form, I say that should make an appearance as a hyper, similar to what Jill offered in MvC2. Other nods to this can be provided through specials or throws. This would also allow for easier coding. N. Chaos from Melty Blood is a perfect example.

Crouching.... I like the fact that many badass boss characters couldn't crouch, like Shao Kahn, Motaro and Abyss. However, kneeling down would be interesting too, so I say you could go either way here. However, no crouching with armor would be a nice touch....

And thats all I got. It's great to see original work for Mugen from such talent. You are certainly creating a name for yourself Sean. I'm hooked on all of your work!!
