Not exactly news (article from 7/18/14), but I think it's worth a post to start a discussion about the current state of Comedy
http://www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/seth-rogen-hated

Quote
American comedy is full of comedians who boast that they're not just willing but happy to offend anybody, anywhere, any time, that they're willing to "go there," to offer comedy that's over and above the usual bullshit. Thus Daniel Tosh and Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle and virtually anyone else worth watching. Despite that richness of options, none of them is even remotely close to the comedian that people hate the most: Seth Rogen.

[...] Rogen is subject to such ferocious attacks (because) he doesn't want to offend. All the other comedians trade in their own offensiveness, and therefore they are above being attacked, for the most part. They are pushing the boundaries. But Seth Rogen screams "I am normal." He's from Canada, for crying out loud — the product of a country whose sole purpose on the planet is not to offend anybody, ever. He identifies himself as a pothead, rather than a drunk or coke fiend — he has chosen to identify with the drug least likely to cause anybody to be an asshole. He makes good-natured, lighthearted comedies, in which he plays self-deprecating characters. He plays himself like any other nice guy.

That is exactly why he can be attacked: his normalcy, his inoffensiveness. [...] He is offensive in exact proportion to his normalcy.

That doesn't seem really related to comedy, but actually to being normal. The article is saying that when people are offensive for comedy, they're not taken seriously, precisely because everyone knows they're being offensive to make a joke. But when someone makes an offensive joke and then says he's normal, it's taken as implying that normal people should think that, normal people should want to kill NK's leader, normal people should be offensive to gays and religions and whatever can be offensive. And it's true : South Park is not offensive because it's a joke, but if a guy says the same kind of things and then says he's normal, it means it's not a joke, which means these offensive comments are serious.
IMO it's not so much about the current state of comedy.
On the other hand, the comment about his Alzheimer address and marijuana are precisely that much more "real", because they're said by a honest person, someone who's not just fucking around for the spotlight.

... what?

That just seems very, very unlikely. I can't really buy this "most hated comedian" thing for Rogen; it's gonna take a lot more evidence than a single movie review and pissing off Kim Jong-un, Esquire.

there's no way rogen is the world's most hated comedian. carlos mencia, carrot top, dane cook and jay leno come to mind before rogen does

I'm not sure those guys have the same worldwide projection to be all that hated. I mean sure, Carrot Top and Dane Cook are EVEN physically disgusting, and widely regarded as "bad", but like they said, they keep on bringing in the cash.

Seth Rogen stars in movies that open world wide, but ... well I think Byakko hit the nail on the head for the most part.

IMO it's not so much about the current state of comedy.
To me it actually kind of is. Comedy these days is barely about being funny, silly, witty, critical or even "edgy". Comedy these days is going all the way to never before seen stretches of being offensive to be funny, to the point where it has transcended offensiveness. It's like Comedy can't pull off a laugh if Jason Segel doesn't try to hug Kristen Bell while on a full frontal shot, or Will Ferrel isn't trying to french a dog or another guy.

That's the "current state of comedy" part I wanted to put on the table.

Oh, I don't know about that. If you want to go there, then it isn't really related to this article : comedians who do "clean" humor simply aren't hated, that's why they're not relevant to that article.
And there's still some the Steve Carells, the Jackie Chans and lots of others that do that type of comedy. Satiric/offensive comedians are more easily heard because it's easy to talk about modern day issues and get angry, there's a lot to make fun of. And they're going to be forgotten just as fast as all the others that were before your time, or all those not from your country - I haven't the foggiest idea who the fuck are any of the guys Titiln listed, for example. As always with everything in the modern days of hyper media exposure, you get worried about "the current generation" only because the medias show them to you. But that doesn't mean they'll stick around any better than all those before them.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

This phrase invalided the whole "article" about Rogers, I mean, Jim Carrey is canadian too, that's very xenophobic, IMO. This looks more like a personal attack from the article's author than a real critic or something, and I also know a few names more hated than Rogers

Uh ? Canadians being ultra nice people is a worldwide running gag, it's not a personal attack, it's a simple and easy joke. And Jim Carrey isn't offensive either, so what's your point in naming him ?

the way the article starts (as if the shitty clickbait title wasn't bad enough) means you can quickly discard it. "who is the world's most hated comedian? it's not who you think. it's not -a bunch of other names you probably thought of first, most likely because you've heard people say they dislike those comedians-. it's this other guy you didn't think about, seth rogen". if you have to preface it like that, it's probably not true. among the names i brought up, carlos mencia has to be the most hated one because he has a reputation of stealing material, which is shitty no matter what kind of comedy you like. "hate carlos mencia" and "carlos mencia sucks" have double the amount of google search results in comparison to their seth rogen equivalents. hoo hoo howard stern doubles mencia's results

as far as the current state of comedy goes, i'm not sure if you mean standup comedy, tv show comedy, movie comedy or just comedy in general. i think the two branches of comedy we're talking about (offensive, nonoffensive) have always had some degree of success. the kind of extremely offensive stuff you mention, i don't think the big bang theory goes to those extremes and that thing is still making a killing in ratings.

or maybe you mean that the offensive stuff is getting more offensive lately, which i agree with, but it doesn't mean stuff that isn't offensive is completely bombing in comparison

I didn't read the whole article but it seems like a bunch of nonsense. For example, Jimmy Fallon is the biggest, edgeless, unfunny fruitcake of a comedian and everybody loves him.

Mean spirited comedy gets the most attention...it doesn't mean its the only popular style going.

He uses the "being canadian" joke as part of the reasons why Roger is hated (by the own author only, it seems), he's not just making a running joke. And Jim Carrey IS canadian, I mentioned him because of that.

Also, see the comments to the article, almost all are against thay guy and not against Roger

Hah, really!? I guess that sorta makes sense, but I'm still kinda surprised; I really thought Mencia would take the cake (but only in like a nebulous and undefined way, I wouldn't have thought to use Google results) because he's pretty hated by the public at large and comedians themselves (for joke stealing).

But yeah, I'm not really getting this at all. The article claims it is because of Rogen's very inoffensiveness that he's hated (which... he's just not); Rogen is not by any stretch of the imagination very offensive. He appears in mostly R-rated stuff, sure, but the underlying themes of those movies are always mushy stuff, like friendship and fatherhood and whatnot. One movie might have, say, gigantic swinging demon dicks, but the underlying message is warm and innocuous. I'm not really getting how Rogen could be considered particularly offensive, at all, especially when there are so, so many comedians out there who so blatantly are offensive.

No, you misunderstood. What the article is saying is this : "Seth calls himself normal, he doesn't want to offend anybody with his humor. And that's only natural : he's from Canada, which has the least offensive people on the planet".

I'm not really getting how Rogen could be considered particularly offensive, at all, especially when there are so, so many comedians out there who so blatantly are offensive.
That's the point, the offensive ones are offensive to make a joke, ergo it's not really insulting, because it's a joke. When South Park insults all religions and gays and stuff, you don't get offended because you know the offense is for a joke. Now a guy who says he's not offensive, but then does something that offends you, even if on a lesser level (like the North Koreans with those military decorations), obviously you're more prone to think "maybe he wasn't making a joke, that means he's serious when he says that, and that's what makes it much more offensive than South Park shitting all over my religion". You take it as an offense specifically because the guy is supposed to not be offensive ; if he was expected to be offensive, you'd just brush it off as a joke - and you won't do that for the guy who isn't normally offensive, you'll think he's serious in his insult.

It shouldn't make Rogen the most hated comedian on the planet though. I didn't think to take that title literally myself, click-bait at most.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Ok, I just read the whole thing and either Esquire is a stupid magazine, or nobody cares what gets published online.

Clearly the only reason there's a discussion here is because people are confused on what was actually said.
This shit is grasping at straws.

Oops, I did a shitty job separating my two thoughts (article is dumb because Seth Rogen is not really hated, and a rambling discourse about how Rogen's movies aren't offensive either even though they get very blue, so he wouldn't be hated for that either). Dunno why I used a semicolon instead of a paragraph, cause those two thoughts seem diametrically opposed because me no use words gud.
