that's right buddy, way back in 2001/2002 when i was "improving" jackie chan's sprites (quotation marks because in retrospect they're pretty bad) i looked at jackie's sprites and thought "i'm going to color his pants red, that way he can have more palettes. yase. i assume shinaku will change the red pants in the default palette." unfortunately shinaku didn't change the palette and that's why jackie's default is a bright blue with bright red, and the chris tucker striker is a fucked up green color. he barely had any palettes. if jackie was made in 2013 he would have 20 palettes including a kula palette.

i'm sure someone else did something similar before i did, but that's the earliest instance i can think of

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.
