Sound effect override

How would I go about overriding the main sound effects for hits?
As in, instead of putting a grunt sound in the common.snd, have it in the characters. I don't want to hear a male grunt when using a female character.

Would I override it in the common1.cns, and if so where? Or how else would I be able to do it? I know how to program a sound while throwing the attack in the characters code, but the actual getting hit by an attack i don't know.

You can override the hit states. Mostly 5000 and 5010 (ground and air first hitstate) to apply these sound effects.
