Well, they still have Yahoo.

Still... that's a step backwards for Spain.

S.D.'s got a point. So far its just the News portion, not Google entirely.

Short story:

- Association of Editors of Spanish Dailies (AEDE) lobbies against Google News because Google spreads "their" content through Google.
- Spanish Government follows suit and introduced a law forcing Google to pay the Spanish publishers for every news snippet that is displayed in Google News service in Spain. Failure to do that payment incurs in a $750K fine
- Google says FU to AEDE and Spanish authorities and shuts down Google News.
- AEDE and Spanish news publishers realize that after shutting down Google News, they will lose about 80% of visitors to their own websites, with the subsequent revenue loss from advertising
- AEDE then lobbies the Spanish Government to force Google not to shut down their service...

And this, my friends, is how Spain wants to be a model country in the 21st century...

thanks for the explanation, I did not know about the first two points in that level of detail.

I wonder how does the aede want to force google not to shutdown.

Shit this kinds of situations make me wonder and hoping that our government won't do the same or take a similar action in the Internet services  :blank:

Wait, so they made a law forcing Google to pay an editors' organization a fee else face a massive fine, and then they are now trying to force Google to not back out without canceling the original law that is causing all of this?

Am I correct in this understanding? Because that is rather stupid and smells like extortion.

yeah, that's about right ; for some reason I assumed the publishers wanted the govt. to back down on th new laws because it sounded too stupid otherwise but too stupid is the reality. I re-read it and loled at the "google is not being neutral" part, how do they expect google to be neutral if this law is directly workign against it.
