...Splatterhouse was Namco's little love note to 80's horror and splatter films. When it hit arcades in 1988, it was far and away the most violent game ever made. It's bloodiness and bizarre OST garnered it a cult following that, oddly, seemed to all but die with release of the 2010 reboot, a massive flop which barely moved 180,000 units.
The original game spawned two direct sequels and a Japan-exclusive title for the Famicom entitled "Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti", which had a pronounced chibi aesthetic and, surprisingly, passable gameplay and responsive controls.
Due to its over-the-top gore, Splatterhouse was an oft cited game during the push for the ESRB rating system.
