This forum is meant to be about Mugen, although it's certainly enjoyed for many other reasons.

Still, I doubt any of us would be here if we did not enjoy fighting games. And considering both players and creators benefit from enhanced understanding of the games of the genre, I believe it would be important to have a specific section to discuss them without risking the topics getting quickly sunk.

Such a section existed before before being changed to it current format - yet now about half the topics are fighting-game-related, and some threads end up becoming huge just so they won't sink, but this makes interesting information hard to find in the middle of over 100 pages.

I think this justifies splitting the existing section in 2 - this allows specific issues about some games to be discussed in-depth in their own threads, making information simpler to find and discuss.

One additional benefit this might have when compared to the previous version, IMO, is that more general issues related to fighting games, but which don't necessarily have anything to do with actual gameplay (character designs, plot, etc...) can be kept or moved to the general gaming section, as those issues can still be present in games of different genres.

I figured it was worth giving a poll a shot - hopefully the public voting will help clarify the viability of the idea...

I'm for it if it's not just for news, if all sorts of classic games get resident threads for small talk that'd get people discussing them and, who knows, playing each other online. cf.

Of course it wouldn't be just for news - actually, I think things like the current discussions about KoF and CvS2 systems in Development Discussion would fit great in there.

I might add links to good examples in a while.

Edit: found some decent examples:

I think those first three topics are already properly located, but yeah it'd be nice if a FG board handled the rest of them.

There's a few more, older ones that dealt with new game releases and whatnot, but those are easier to identify from the title alone.

cool, thanks to this suggestion now I am ignoring the general gaming forum; can we make the fighting games forum the root one ?

Contras:

  • What practical need for that? You can click directly on the FIGHTING childboard even from the board index.
  • Fighting Games > Other Gaming Stuff seems backwards
  • Fighting Games & Gaming next to each other increase board index height -- doesn't seem worth it

What's a good pro?

It would be essentially a matter of highlighting the forum's focus on the understanding of fighting games and their mechanics - having a section for them just seems natural, although it practically never happens in a Mugen forum for some reason.

Even if one isn't at top level, at least now it exists, which is at least a step forward.

I like it the way it is, please keep it as it's the most logical choice as fighting games are a part of gaming even if the forum's main focus is fighting games.

mugen is a game and the mugen forums are not part of the gaming one either.

as loona said, fighting games overall are more relevant and should be in the same level or higher than general games, but what we have now is much, much better than before.
