Welp, I've been teasing it long enough, and since Pupa's pretty much done (I'm just being a lazy bum in designing a web page), I might as well roll back the curtain on my next WIP.



Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Mario Mario from Super Mario Bros: The Movie, as portrayed by the late, great Bob Hoskins. I commissioned the sprites from Seanaltly, and we also brainstormed the initial movelist together (he's a huge fan of the movie so he had some cool ideas that I'm running with). What's even more crazy is that even though I only commissioned sprites, he put it together so that most of my work is just tweaking values and adding in FX. So in a weird way, this is mostly his character and I'm just doing an edit of it :o

The gameplay plan is to adapt him over to a system similar to the ROTD system I'm using with Pupa, with some extra tweaks that may or may not see use in a future project. Also despite everything, I might have to axe a few moves from him (mostly for balance). Anyway, Mario is mostly going to be a zoning character, setting up projectiles and just generally trying to get out of the way. However, he won't totally suck in close quarters! I'll be working to find a nice sweet spot for those two to make sure it's balanced.

BOB-OMB. Yeah I know the movie one is much smaller. I'm thinking of having two different bob-ombs; a small, quick one that goes across the entire screen, and a big, slow one that detonates automatically.


The Devolution Gun! This will obviously be a super, and in ROTD style, there will be a Lv.1 and Lv.2 variant. My intent is to have them take advantage of the community Anakaris transformation standards, and if I'm feeling extra ambitious, MAYBE trigger those kid transformations in some of the JJBA characters floating around MUGEN.

Hopefully this shouldn't take as long as Pupa to make since... well... most of it is already done. HOWEVER, I am looking for a voice actor that can pull off a good Bob Hoskins impression, so let me know if you're interested!

Will Double M have a use for those jet boots like in the movie?  Something that gives him mobility or mix-up potentials like an air dash, high jump, or a quick dash after setting traps?

Finding a Bob Hoskins impersonator might be a bit difficult, but everything you've mentioned so far looks pretty solid.

That first screenshot is actually an implementation of that (I just didn't get the effects in there), where jumps forward and stomps on the opponent. Think of it like Akuma's Hyakkishu

He also has a kick where the boots get some use.

Sounds cool, I'll ask Seanaltly if he's up to spriting that. Right now Mario just has one winpose (he does the salute from the home video box cover), but it wouldn't hurt to have just one more. (although I imagine if we do the dance one, you'd need to do it under very specific circumstances, ie: getting a perfect)

Hah! Well at the moment there's no plans to be able to flip the Bob-Omb so we can see those, but it will live on in our imaginations.

Finding a Bob Hoskins impersonator might be a bit difficult, but everything you've mentioned so far looks pretty solid.
I guess if all else fails I can get a headset and try to VA the darn thing myself but I can't really do his voice without hurting myself :(

If he's up for it, it would be an awesome alt SND pack, but I really want to make sure that at least for the initial download that it at least sounds something like Mr. Hoskins.

Because I lack time and resources, can you post some examples of Bob Hoskins' work up? I'm decent at impersonations, but I'd need to gauge whether I'd be able to compare my vocal range and speaking patterns with his.

There's a little bit of talking there. It's hard to find clips of this movie on youtube.

I dunno about intros, but I know that at the very least custom winquotes are in order, although to be fair I can't think of any decent Marios or Bowsers to interact with (except maybe Shinryoga's Mario). Not trying to be snobby or anything, but if I do an interaction with something, I want it to be with something that a lot of people use, which usually means that it's good.

I'm in Skype right now, and a friend of mine might be interested in doing the voice acting for this project. Jango, do you think you can provide me with some lines for this project to send to him?
Still trying to work out the timings and shit (and also watching the movie a few more times so I can get the character right), but once I do, I'll PM you right away. The VA is a little bit further down the line, but if he wants to do a line from the movie that would probably be the best way to try it at this point.
