sfzero is a style, cvs is a style, darkstalkers is a style, marvel-capcom sprites are a style (xmen fighting game, marvel superheroes fighting game), what the fuck is the mvc style ? mvc2 has got some exclusive chars but do they use a style that differs from the previous ones?

Isnt it also that CvS proportions are more "human" for most of the characters? I know there are some reused reshaded sprites too..Rolento, Dan, Cammy and a few others.

yup.  plus snk takes that " human " way even further.

Kofc and Frederika...... you both are right but yeah mvc2 itself isnt a solid style cause its just  continuation of mvc in spritings. best yet compare side by sde mvc wolverine nd mvc2 wolverine....almost no difference.

You got it wrong, they are thalking about MVC as a whole style and if it exists or not, no one said MVC2 is it's own style compared to previous VS games :P.

Also CVS reusing SFA and VS sprites, doesn't that kinda defeats the lightsource being different between CVS and MVC sprites? Is the only difference between the styles the width of the sprites?
pls

No it doesn't, the majority of the characters were sprited in the style, so that style sets the rules. Capcom may have just been pressed for time so sprites got reused.

Yeah but for CVS2 they also did the same. Weird enough Chun Li was the only returning character to be sprited in CVS style. How many other rules are different between CVS and SFA besides light source and width? (I'm not counting color difference because I guess you can adjust that on the SFA sprites with ease).
pls

Not too many that I can tell other than anatomical proportion being closer to real life in CvS. Character height is different as well.

Rolento is the guy to ask really. I just draw what looks right.

Actually ... The difference is pretty simple.

First off is Darkstalkers style. In many cases the characters resort to pure black outlines that made them look slightly dirty. This is because of how the spriting process was made - Hand drawn, scanned, digitalized. They didn't take the time to clean ALL black outlines. This is Proto Alpha Style - - - Actualy Alpha style got rid of the pitch black pixels, and actually started getting more creative on how to combine color palettes to reduce color count slightly, but still the sprites look smudgy around the edges.

CVS - Edges are 100% drawn digitalized, no stray pixels with weird colors exist. CVS is the simplest and most efficient when it comes to color management, that's why it's so popular.

This is just from observation, if you want an in-depth analysis with proof and screenshots, let's wait for Rolento to make it :P

How much time do you people think I have these days? .\/.

Think of it this way; CPS2/CPS3 era work borrow more from classical animation principles; they are more cartoon like in nature, tend to have exaggerated proportions and animation compared to KOF styled work. KOF styled work is based around 3d models, which in most cases had a better grasp on realistic anatomy; this resulted in something that had a more believable look in their spritework until more recent years where they have become more animated themselves. For actual CvS sprites, you'd be best off thinking of KOF's general scale with some added muscle, Capcom's color library, and a light source from directly above.

sfzero has got beautiful sprite borders, overall is way too damned polished, that and the rectangular as opossed to square pixels meant that they had to use something different for cvs; cvs style is one of the most simplistic styles this side of the gameboy that you can find, pretty much every "cvs" style sprite you see made by fans, such as felo or kiwi is completely overdone and has a fuckton of added detail (not that is is bad) the one who sprites closest to the style is likun.

I guess marvel style falls really close to sfzero style but the proportions are different, feet and hands are not that exagerated and the characters are much taller, kinda like comparing kof and aof (actually zero is not as short in this comparison, that would be darkstalkers with zero falling somewhere in between).

It drives me crazy how big the shotos feet are in SF3. Sean Altly gets pretty close to CvS though. I agree about Li Kun. His CvS Morrigan is great.

Sean Altly's sprites are pretty close to CVS, except the proportions.
Everything about his spriting is too conservative and sober, poses, bodies, faces etc.
CVS style is as bold as Capcom's animators have been doing this for years.

that doesn't look CVS. Also, I see you pasted different parts of the body with different colors and you got them mixed up. It's most noticeable in the Skin and Hair

i colored hair using the colors taken by the artwork and tones of the original anime. the parts and skin is frakensprited from cvs bases mai and maki , i did scrath work everywhere else. yeah she does and could use alot more shading in areas to define lightsourcing to make her true cvs i gather. thanx for commenting.
