(Thread obsolete) Mega Man X - Scrap Metal Arena

    • mugen.yolasite.com/stages.php
This topic is for my latest fullgame wip. Before anyone asks, I have not forgotten about my previous work in progress..

http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=121877.msg1217425#msg1217425

I've simply taken a bit of a break from it. It isn't canceled by any means. I'm just more interested in this wip for the time being. Anywho,

-Mega Man X Battle-

-CHARACTERS SO FAR-

X-Hunters
-Serges (X2)
-Agile (X2)
Enemies
-Armor Soldier (X1)
-Bee Blader (X1)
Maverick Bosses
-Armored Armadillo (X1)
-Sting Chameleon (X1)
-Spark Mandrill (X1)
-Storm Eagle (X1)
-Morph Moth (X2)
-Bubble Crab (X2)
-Gravity Beetle (X3)
-Tunnel Rhino (X3)
Sigma Stage Bosses
-Bospider CPU ONLY (X1)
-Dr.Doppler (X3)
-Berkana (Xtreme2)
-Sigma (X3)

-STAGES-

I plan on having the small single image boss stages as well as the wide multi-layered stages such as the Concrete Man and Solar Man MMX-style stages I've shown and released in the past.

-RANDOM NOTES-

-Each character uses 3 buttons. X,y, and z. Most characters shall have crouching and jumping attacks as well as regular standing ones.

-I'm going for accuracy, and then some. In other words I'll add some extra neat stuff every now and then but don't expect anything short of some new projectiles and new uses for old sprites, with the occasional edited sprites. So yeah, you're not going to see any of the mavericks walking unless they already have the sprites necessary to do so.

-My goal for the roster is to have X, Zero, Sigma, the maverick bosses, and even standard enemies. I want to even have enemies that have like..two attacks be playable. Just a fun compilation of any random characters from the game.

-As you may guess from the previous bullet point, this game WILL be unbalanced. Not really in an Orochi-Shin-God-Megafuck Versus Homer Simpson type of way, I just mean that if you're playing as a Metool against a boss then you might not have a good chance of winning.

-Custom lifebars, of course. No small portraits though. I decided to simply always have P1 have X's symbol, and P2 to have the Maverick skull. Yes it is just laziness.

-PALETTE TEMPLATES-

I'll change what templates are available from time to time.

-REGARDING CONTRIBUTIONS-

If anyone wishes to get involved in this project then I would gladly accept any contributions including;

-Music remixes using Megaman X SNES instruments. (Example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPNekDG0H50)

-Palettes, of course.

-Stages from the X series. Maybe Wily Wars.

-If you wish to make/contribute a character, we can discuss that in this thread.

I am always glad to make content on my own. In fact I spend more time editing content for my own personal Mugens then I do playing them, but if anyone wants to help out  and get involved then that is cool too.

Also, Storm Eagle has been recently completed. I'll post a template and video of him soon. Template added to first post. Here is the video,

Awesome project you have here. I really like the filtered sprites for the project. ;P I made some MMX styled Axl sprites a month or two ago, you can use them if you want and edit them however you want. I pretty much went off from the one Axl fake screenshot for Megaman X9. :P (Some required poses may be missing.)

Oh awesome! Thanks a bunch.  :D

And..filtered sprites? They all maintain the same size as they originally did, same goes for the game ratio itself. Some screenshots are simply 2x in size though.

Anywho though, thanks for the Axl sprites. Any custom sprite-sheets in the X-style could definitely be used for this project.

That would be ideal, but I'm not sure yet. I'm definitely going to have Sigma's primary forms from each game though. They're pretty ideal for a fighting game anyways!

If each Sigma is going to be its own character, then you could have each final form as a super. As for a final sigma form? If you can do a 16-bit form of Sigma's final form from Xtreme 2, that could work (I mean, you did put Berkana, so Sigma shouldnt be a problem)

You limit yourself so badly when you try to avoid variables. When you get over your fear of the "complexity" of variables, you will find yourself in a better place: A beautiful world where coding is actually fun.

Nice work so far! My only suggestion is that you use open stages (without walls or ceilings) so that the characters don't go through the walls.

As I said in the first post, there are boss stages and wide stages that allow you to walk further and not be restricted.

Well think about it, there are only a few Maverick bosses throughout X1-3 that can even walk. Bubble Crab, Overdrive Ostrich (even though he runs), and I think that is honestly it!

Aside from the occasional boss that can dash, if that even counts..I'd say that walking is really an optional feature for the characters in this game, given their movement in the original games. Plus, after playing/testing this game quite a bit..I can honestly say that you get used to it. ;)

im glad to finally see the other mavericks from x2 and x3 i would have started months ago if i knew how to code. well if you include dashing(movement) you still have: boomer kuwanger, flame stag, blizzard buffalo, claw crawfish, and neon tiger(sort of). but if you go by actual leg movement ya those two would be the only ones. keep up the great work!

Yeah it is strictly the 16-bit games. Nothing short of some real good sprite editing will get any of the X4-8 characters in here. Sorry. D:

I might add some Mega Man 7 and Wily Wars content in the future though, but only stuff that doesn't stray too far from the 16-bit X games. Already got a few Wily Wars stages so far.

Yeah man, if you want to make a full sheet I say go for it. I don't know how accurate I'd make his gameplay though. Movement style anyways.

I just always hated how he just floats around, goes off screen, flies back on in a retarted pre-set path...

Loving this. More than any other MUGEN proj I've ever seen. This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to ask Elecbyte to add online functionality to the engine (yes, yes, I know it's impossible and non-practical, cheaters, differences between games, etc.).

No it doesn't, I think by the time 2.0 comes out, then the online feature maybe introduced. 1.1 would probably feature a zooming feature and a bilinear rendering function, if that's accurate enough, so there will be no online, cuz elecbyte has a lot of issues to fix before they going to allow the online feature.

Oh, I almost forgot, 1.1 might have the tag option in.

I've noticed you didn't add super bars to the lifebar set. Considering some attacks are more powerful than some others, have you considered powerbar use as a gameplay option?

I have considered it, but just for the sake of limiting people from spamming projectiles in general, not the power issue.

In terms of power levels and such, I'd like to emphasize again that occasionally characters will have devastating attack capabilities thus causing them to be boss-like. I just think that it would be more enjoyable to say, fight a powerhouse like Spark Mandrill while playing as some smaller and weaker maverick such as Sting Chameleon and know that Spark Mandrill has a high chance of whooping you if he gets the opportunity to unleash everything on you without you being careful.

In other words, a somewhat lack of balance. Just not to an insane degree. It simply means that whoever plays this will probably get the pleasure of playing as more then one character at all times.

Another take at his X8 form. It looks better than my previous attempt. Also, a custom palette.

Also, do you mind if I mind if I make some Storm Eagle palettes? I never made any, and I got some ideas now.

New Sigma palette, heavy update on my old Infernal palette and my last attempt at an X8 palette, which looks damn near identical to yours.

Also, some Storm Eagle palettes, which I must say I had fun making.

Those Bee Blader palettes are awesome!

are you going to make both versions of zero? and i assume he will have his basic moves and attacks?

I plan to make all 3 versions. I just wish I had some walking sprites for his X1 version, seeing as he probably won't have many attacks other then his Z-Buster and I'd like to have him at least be a bit more useful in terms of movement, seeing as most characters so far can't even walk.

X2 version should be pretty accurate, and X3 version..well I would give him just his saber if I had edited sprites once again for alternate slashes, but otherwise I'll probably just give him a slash and two different buster shots. Probably not going to give Zero or X charging, just have the blasts ready from the start.

Thanks.

3 for the Armored Armadillo.

Just one curious question.  There appears to be some unused colors spreaded on each characters' color table.  I need to know if the applied palettes work correctly to all and do not show signs of a missing or glitched color spot.

In other words, if Armadillo's skin is red, do all of his skin sprites are completely covered in red or is there at least one image that has a missing color?

Looking forward to the rest.

Ah, don't worry about it. Those colors are from some sprites that I forgot to remove from the template before I converted it. They were part of his charging sprites which I removed due to Mugen's palfx basically rendering them useless.

Good stuff.

So far I'm unfortunately not done with Overdrive Ostrich. Of all the characters so far he seems the most annoying to code..I dunno why. Mainly his jumping into background + running move. >___< As cool as it looks it is pretty fucking useless and has been a pain to code so far.

Otherwise my only problem is trying to figure out how to implement the rocket from his stage into his movelist. Mwuahahahah!

At first I was going to have the explosions match the games 100% of the time. (X characters only have orange flames, X2-X3 have blue flames) but it seems more fun and interesting to mix it up a bit. Makes the palettes more interesting.  ;D

And as for Colonel, the only way he'd make it into the game would be if someone did a full sheet of him in 16-bit MMX style. Same mostly goes for any other Mega Man character, regardless of the series.

good stuff! however, the rocket coming from the bottom does look wierd much like the guy said on the video. now considering him riding would be tough to do since you plan on using it for a basic attack, now what i just thought of is why not just have the rocket come in from the left and right of the screen instead? it probably have to be shorten up to have it look right coming out of the screen and hitting opponents.

So you think it should come from the right or left side, as opposed to from the air? I see what you mean but seeing as the rocket is pretty large that move would be quite hard to dodge, making it pretty cheap. Most characters don't have blocking or crouching, and even with a jump it would still be kinda messed up.

I have vertically flipped the rocket though, and aside from that if anyone was wondering the reason why I have the attack the way it is (very short range) is because I was going for something similar to Captain Corridor in which it covers that whole vertical space but is still easy to avoid.

Yes. But they are both 16 bit and very similar in some cases. Some bosses such as Slash Man very very closely resemble the X style, while other characters such as Mega Man himself are not only totally different in proportion but just overall look different. It isn't as much of a stretch as the difference between X1-3 and X4-6.

A Vile'd be nice. But you know what'd be even better? X himself.

Really, I totally didn't think to make X for a Mega Man X game.  :sugoi:

1st) I NEVER SAID NO VILE. I JUST PREFER TO MAKE HIM MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111

2nd) Awesome sig + avatar. That commercial is disturbing but amazing.

3rd) People, people. Don't worry. My goal is to have all the standard 8 bosses from X1-3 as well as at least one version of X, all 3 games' Zeros, most likely standard non-mech Vile from both X1 and X3, a few Mega Man 7 and Wily Wars characters here and there, and the occasional other characters such as Sigma, Doppler, etc which will also include different versions from each game. Also random enemies and possibly Sigma Fortress bosses as well as Axl and hopefully more sprite edited characters.

3rdrdrdrd) Always feel free to suggest more characters though, I truly appreciate your suggestions.

4th) This project, like all other Mugen projects will take time. Not years...just a long time.  :P

now when you say 3 versions of zero are you including the "bad" zero from x2? cause i think 1 and 2 are the same(red version) thats the only thing i can come up with, and he has some decent moves. are you going to try and do all the fortress bosses, cause i honestly would like to see some become characters.

have you thought of make bit and byte and/or their combined version? since you didnt mention them i wasnt sure you were including them :D

MMX1 Zero is different then X2 aka "bad" Zero. X1 Zero will be fairly accurate to his original, including a mid-charged buster shot and his grab-enemy-and-explode move.
Seriously, I will not make X1 Zero until I figure out how to have him grab the enemy, explode, and become a torso. This is a must. I may also throw in a regular uncharged buster shot.

As for X2 Zero, he should be pretty accurate as well. He damn well has enough moves to make a decent character.

And I will make Bit and Byte as well as their combined form who's name escapes me at the moment mainly due to it being *long and hard to remember. It'll take a while before I do either of them though. Bit and Byte have pretty unusual attacks.

*Thats what she said.

And fortress bosses, if I do include any more then I'll probably ask another creator if he'd like to help out in the creation process. I already got permission to use someone's Bospider which is pretty awesome. Velgauder should be easy to do, and I'll take of him myself..but as for any fullscreen or non-traditional characters in terms of movement such as Rangda Bangda I'll do as I said before and ask around for help.

Even though from the videos the game may look pretty playable and decent, there are still a ton of small annoyances to take care of for almost each character just to have them play perfectly.

I'll release a demo/early version whenever I have all of that taken care of as well as a final boss, X, Zero, and the voice announcer implemented.
