Tricks to help find character infinites

Attending a request from Speedy9199, I prepared a guide for creators and betatesters. Here are the most common setups for infinite combos in Mugen:

_______________________________________

*The most frequent of all the setups the "Walking Jab" and the more tricky variation "Walking Crouching Jab" setups:

Example 01 - Walking Jabs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-xL68TTga8

Sometimes you can replace the jab with a stronger version.

Sometimes the pushback of the attack is high enough, but you can replace the WALK with a RUN and you get an infinite.

------------------------------------------

* If your char is MvC styled, he probably will have an air-chain infinite combo. More than 90% of these chars have an infinite like this, particularly if your dummy is tall.

Example 02 - 6 button Air-chain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuFq4cabhCU

------------------------------------------

* Some chars will have the "Jumping X" / "Jumping A" cancellable into itself, like KFM. This variation of air chain infinite is extremely common as well:

Example 03 - Jump X > X > X > X > Z
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou5CpJ3qamI

------------------------------------------

*Like it wasn't enough to have the aerial chain ability, many creators add a short jump to their chars. Short Jumps don't combine with air chains  :( :

Example 04 - Short Jump + Air Chain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DaEOpf-_L4

------------------------------------------

* If your char is Melty Blood-styled / Eternal Fighter Zero-styled, be careful with the Jump Cancel (cancelling a basic attack into a jump) ability from these games:

Example 05 - Jump Cancel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzqKGgDds7I

------------------------------------------

* Some chars use a hop forwards instead of running. By adding the possibility of attacking during the hop, you are likely to find abuses:

Example 06 - Attacking During Hop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn9jkCyf5H4

------------------------------------------

* Guilty Gear and Eternal Fighter Zero advanced players tend to use the air dash immediately after the start of a jump, because air attacks can't be guarded low, and you have really fast overheads by using an instant air-dash and attacking immediately.

This technique is known as "96", because of the command that you must input ( ). Look at your numeric keyboard and you will understand why it's called "96".

Now try to use the "96" in Mugen:

Example 07 - Instant Air Dash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_kN04roIOc

These combos are hard to perform. Nonetheless, they are really common.

------------------------------------------

Many chars use chain combos [X > Y > Z] or [A > B > C] - styled. If one of these attacks has an excessive hittime, you can restart your chain combo from the weak attack and making an infinite:

Example 08 - Ground Chain Combos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3chIDCC_x6g

Sometimes you must dash before starting a new combo:

Example 09 - Ground Chain Combos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P09G-4Sfg-g

------------------------------------------

Many creators like to use Diving Kicks in their chars. But it's more complicated to balance a Diving Kick than doing it with other attacks.

Here's the setup. Dive Kick, jump again, attack, cancel with Dive Kick, repeat:

Example 10 - Dive Kicks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an6IFvoad4g

PotS is aware of this infinite combo in his Sakura. But it won't be fixed, since he abandoned the Mugen scene.

When you search for Dive Kick infinites, make sure to use the NEUTRAL, or BACKWARDS jump (NOT the forwards jump), so that you force the Dive Kick to hit when you're almost landing, creating the necessary frame advantage to jump again.

------------------------------------------

* Projctiles are a good source for infinites as well.

They can create an infinite in its own...

Example 11 - Projectiles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXYQg7Ouaps

... or you can link a basic attack after the projectile and make a loop:

Example 12 - Projectile + Chain Combo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5dAtJPY724

That's it. Hope that all betatesters find these informations useful.

This is a really large ammount of factors for a creator to take care of, and not all creators are interested in balancement. Therefore it's common to see one or more of these setups being overlooked.

That's a really nice guide. I managed to find 4 infinites caused by aerial attacks thanks to it. Thanks.

One way that I use to prevent infinites is to use a variable to decrease the hittime over the course of a combo. That way, it prevents some infinite loops, which works for MvC type characters since on taller characters they can perform jump loop combos like the video posted.

I find these videos to be quite useful. Wouldn't this be better in the Tutorials place in the Development Help?

:o Wow THANKS  :o because of Zzyzzyxx's post this should be pinned in the help section or something. This can really help people out.
The only Mugen creator on this site without a "gay" purple name.  :-X

Little known FACT: If you use the equation, (z)velocity = (((x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2)^.5) / time and z = a small decimal number in mugen you can get something that follows something else. Useful for heat seeking missiles, black holes, magnet effects, a projectile aimed for an enemy's head... Seriously, try it! It's awesome!

You, as the creator of this thread, can move it to Tips/Tricks/Tutoriais section. You can find the buttons "Move Topic" and "Lock Topic" at the bottom of the page.

About sticking it, it's up to a mod to decide.

I'm going to remove the first couple of posts so people see the guide as first post.

In M.U.G.E.N there is no magic button

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

To detect infinites, I use practice mode and have the ai button mash whatever attack I'm examining. I do it when I'm right next to them for accurate results.
