Eh... I might have gone overboard with the poll options.  :P
5 votes per user.

I'm just curious to see what qualities of a video game do other people try to look for when playing it.

Cause we all favor different elements of a game. So what do you favor?

If a game plays well and entertains me, that is all I ask.  While I do enjoy games with engaging storylines and lots of modes, at the end of the day all that's truly necessary is entertaining gameplay.  Why do you think Pac Man has survived for so long?  Furthermore, if you have a good story, shitloads of customization, tons of unlockables, great multiplayer and perfect netcode, what good is it if the game itself is bland?

What I look in a game is something I could play over more than once, that's amusing, has unlockable content (concept art, characters, extra music, new HUDs, etc.) and is generally an experience with a lot of heart put into it.
Pre-cashcow Capcom got me hooked on their better PSX fighter ports due to how much time you could put into them. Also, One Piece Mansion.

Then you got awesome shit like the entire Ape Escape. If you didn't like the main game, you could go play the minigames and have a blast out of those.

The poll has a flaw, the first option shouldn't even be there. No one plays a game without looking for "fun", that would be conunterproductive :P, So I didn't vote for that.

Sountrack is a must in my case, if the game doesn't have a good soundtrack then I will soon or late not enjoy the game enough to try to master it. I probably would be able to 100% Sonic 06 just because of it's awesome OST (Thank God I never played that game D: ).

Replay value is a must aswell, atleast in the form of ranks like in Trauma Center/Team.

Online capabilities + Be able to enjoy it alone. Mainly because online is the standard nowadays. Sometimes I can't play it with my friends and just dont wish to play with random people so I also expect to have some fun on single player mode.

Originality is also something I wanna see in the title but it's not a really "must", otherwise I would only play 5 games every 10 years :P.

but that's not what they are "looking for" when they buy a game they wish. When you talk about people who buy games to get money in tournaments then it means they buy the game as a job resource, they dont expect anything from it then, they just do their job.

I suppose.

Oh, forgot to mention online-wise: some people actually do purchase games just to piss and moan at people online. No fun out of it, just bitching.
An outlet, really. You can't really count "stress ball" as a job.

Typical example: any modern FPS (voice chat optional)

Funny you mentioned that. What sparked my interest in Castlevania was actually the music. Then I loved the story, and then I tried the games, and here I am. D:

The main thing I look for in a game (after being fun to play, naturally) is uniqueness.  I much prefer games with new, unique gameplay mechanics, a distinctive art style, and/or an interesting new concept behind it.  I'm much more inclined to buy the quirky auteur game that pushes into unexplored territory than I would be the big AAA blockbuster sequel.

All my choices are genre-neutral, but they are most commonly found in RPGs: Fun and Great Gameplay, Outstanding Graphics (I don't care if unrealistic or realistic, great graphics make games better.), Amazing and Emotional Storyline, Originality, Good Difficulty Curve.

Memorable characters, as much customization as possible, good camera, lots of cheats ranging from dumb to shockingly out of place and the ability to kill random people and get away with it.

I picked "Fun and great gameplay", "Outstanding graphics (Stylish)", "Soundtrack", "Originality" and "Good difficulty curve"

I focus on gameplay (obviously) and soundtrack comes second. As much as I could hate a game, if I love its soundtracks I would play it for that only (or download the OST).

As everybody else, Gameplay. Core element, yo'.

If I do like to have graphics I prefer them bright, colourful and funky. None o' this gunmetal brown shit. I'll go down a warehouse if I want that.

Originality is also a plus. Part of why I like Okami and Killer7.

Good difficulty curve. I admit I don't really take interest in games that start off too hard for no reason via just plain cheap stuff. Nor do I want them to be too easy (Except when I played and enjoy the Kirby games, that shit's rad)

Do you have a 360? You'll get to try out Dark Souls.

I can definitely agree with this too.  Music is a huge part of any entertainment experience to me (game, movie, TV show, etc) so if a game doesn't have good music it will put a big damper on the experience.

As long as I can have fun, that's all that matter.
After, the other options in the poll depend on the style of game : I don't care so much for Music in football games as I do for RPGs. I don't care so much about voice acting in football games as I do for Fighting Games and RPGs, but I care more about the gameplay and the options to play with friends in a football game rather than a RPG. :haw:

Granted, NES game music can be trully epic, but I don't play video games to listen to music. :P

for action types: good old sword and shield fighting, exploring dungeons, collecting weapons and loot, challanging puzzles.

for RPG: easy to use battle system, good storyline, epic final bosses, and humor for added laugher

"Fun and great gameplay!": More gameplay than fun. I really like fast games, like Earth's Special Forces.
"Outstanding graphics! (Unrealistic)": I admit it, I'm VERY detallist in graphics, but I don't like a game with monsters using weird guns that fires nuke bombs or Genki Damas exploding the Earth (I like the "unrealistic near the reality concepts", like Half Life)
"Amazing and emotional storyline!": Very important for me, but I don't like much the predictable storylines.
"Profound voice acting!": I don't like the music in a game, but yes the characters with a good voice acting. (don't matter if the character in the game is human or not)
"Great customization abilities!": Hey, I 'm a RPG fan, what can I say?

I like to remember the old days too: Mario, Sonic, Double Dragon, Street Fighter 2, Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Megaman, Tokkyuu Shirei - Solbrain (Shatterhand sucks), Excite bike (lol), Castlevania and others classics of 8, 16 and 32 bits.

As everyone says, gampeplay is key. Once it's awesome everything else is optional. I do, however, appreciate a good story, great music, good voice acting (I shouldn't want to mute my tv all the time) and at least moderately realistic graphics.

  • Unique, just like everyone else
In no particular order:

Fun and great gameplay!  Nothing else on that list, in virtually any combination, can ever make bad gameplay worth the time and effort to play it.
Amazing and emotional storyline!  The importance of this cannot be underplayed.  If I hate every character in your game, I'm not likely to keep playing.  The catch is, if your storyline take so many cutscenes to tell that story that I spend more time watching and less playing, I will not continue playing your game.
Good difficulty curve!  Doesn't mean it has to get really hard by the end.  But I don't want a cakewalk and then run into a brick wall.  This kind of thing makes me throw controllers at TV's/keyboards at monitors.
Replay value!  A game is an investment.  Anything you play once and never want to play again is a bad investment.  I should want to replay your game, be it to try a different path, or just for nostalgia a decade later.
Ability for me to take a long time for me to complete it!  Three of my favorite games in the last ten years?  Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout: New Vegas.  Why?  Because they don't force me through a story.  I do it at my pace.  In Oblivion's case, I enjoyed doing this so much that it basically negated the fact that the story sucked.

Ability to enjoy it with friends! - I hate playing games alone, but there are games that I love watching my friends play and share the experience with, not limited to just couch co-op or online co-op or online VS or whatever, being able to play a game with my friends with me makes gaming way more enjoyable.

Fabulous online multiplayer/capabilities! - When I absolutely have to play alone, I really enjoy online multiplayer, this sort of ties in with the "I hate playing games alone" thing.

Great customization abilities! - Again, when I absolutely have to play alone, I love to be able to customize my character. I like sexy dresses. :(
