what version of paint shop pro is good for editing sprites or if there is a good tutorial for making palettes in gimp
Paintshop pro? If all you wanna do is apply wierd FX, any version just about probably. If you mean actually drawing things, none of them. For edits MSpaint is superior. Go with that.
PSP 7 is just about alright. The PSP X series (I think 9 and above) turned into a (bad) Photoshop clone that can't do anything about sprites and knows nothing other than photo editing. And I have no idea why and in what ways MSPaint would be superior to PSP7 as far as sprite editing goes. PSP7 is actually useable and lets you manage palettes just fine.
It's just simpler to edit things in MSpaint, the pencil and paintbrush tools are easier to manage as is select and copy paste. PSP on copy paste creates you a new image. You need to use ctrl+shift+e to get it to paste inside the current image. Fill tool is also ass, if you don't select the region you want filled, it fills the whole image. Not saying PSP can't do sprite editing, it's just more clunky for it. About the only thing it's really excellent with is that the zoom function goes further. There may be settings you can change for this stuff, but as MSpaint is so incredibly easy to use i've never found it necessary to go looking.

I never had any problem the first time I tried it, so I quickly grew used to it, and it still has things MSPaint really can't do when I do heavy frankenspriting (pasting with the background color as transparent really helps BIG time for frankenspriting - that was made much more difficult in later version of PSP though, more photo-oriented) Oh, and at the same time MSPaint just pissed me off with the need to go through so many operations to perform for a decent frankenspriting (resizing, rotating, mirroring / flipping). PSP let me manipulate each frankenpiece along with the magic wand (region selection) and the fill tool quite easily and quickly, so again, that with the easy key shortcuts, it was just a matter of habit.
Pretty much, depends how heavily you wish or need to edit. I use PSP 7 when the situation demands it, or if i have a simple edit to apply to LOTS of images and i wish to keep axis.
Quoteediting spritesYou asked for that. MSPaint is perfectly good for that. You have a zoom tool, copy and paste with square and freeform and a variety of brush sizes. If you need more than that for editing you probably need more practice. If you want to apply palettes and crap then stick with gimp, you seem to have it or you wouldn't be asking the question.
is there a tutorial on making palettes in gimp that will show up in mugen?,also when ever i use a sprite that i created(not from a sprite sheet) the transparency won't work even when when the character's backround is white, the default colour, which results in a big white box around the sprite.
