When you post feedback......

A bit of a general subject here.

After looking at releases on forums and looking at how people give their feedback I was wondering how do most people like to give their feedback? A few people give a list of what's wrong with the character without say whether they liked it or not, however I think this should be included even if they don't like it (not that i would agree with someone saying “its crap”) because that will tell the creator if its necessary to go along with the updates or not.

Also from a creators point or view if your topic gets 800+ views, and no replies what would you assume?

-They are afraid to comment because of moderators
-Someone has spread some bad comments about you blemishing your reputation.
-There is nothing wrong with your character (yes!)
-The creator knows what he/she is doing and he will find all the bugs anyway.
-Users are afraid the creator/author/editor is going to “bit their head” off with the troll like remark's if they comment.
-The users knows that the comment might hurt the creators feelings
-That members of the forum think that you wont listen their feedback
-They are not interested in your release

Also I think when the creator does an update on a creation afterwards based on what someone has said it would be nice to hear if your have done it right or not too.

The poll is here because I'm curious, how do members here like to give their feedback?

Heres the choice:

“Nice character +1”
Just Provide a list of bugs
Provide a list of bugs and add a mild mannered opinion on the character
Provide a list of bugs with a strong opinion
“Downloading now”
“Will give feedback later”
A lot of the times I don't want to give feedback I just want to download.

Discuss your opinions or vote on the poll

to be honest, when you get 800 views an no comment, probably means you disappointed people in the past, or they're not interested in your release.

it also depends on the forum, i was lurking IMT and i saw the admin say something that that type of feedback is not acceptable here, even if it is on MFG/MI. If your so use to a forum like that you'll probably post, *Nice char" etc...

When i give feedback it depends on who it is actually, if it's someone who just released their first character i try to go for basic things like Required sprites(damn you mugenisjustfine ;P) and stuff like hitvelsets and pauses, i also see if the throws are wonky because they usually are on first character :P

if it's someone who has already released an good amount i'll probably point out something that is out of their personal preference, something like a debug spam or something like that. probably give suggestions on curent moves and not ask for anything more

If it's someone who thinks that someone will be "kissing their a**" i tend to not post feedback anymore, as of now.

I avoid posting any feedback unless I am directly asked. normally when I post in a release topic it is not to comment about the release but bout secondary matters that happen in there.

I may give feedback, I may not. But I never simply say "Nice car" or "downloading now". It's basically the same effect of YouTube comments composed solely of quotes from the video.

Well, I haven't downloaded anything for mugen since 2001, so I'm usually don't give feedback because I didn't run the person's release.

And the so called community ignores anything I do because it usually lacks pretty graphics, so meh.  :P

Some interesting opinions (damn 9999, I guess that's a few other ways you could look at it ,strong words :P) , one point I forgot too add was “I would just thank them for their time” after all the author may of spent a lot of time working on it even if it wasn't too good, sometimes appreciation can go along way.

I guess also that maybe whatever is said in the post can put off viewers, if you post this character is not going to be good/not to your liking after putting an attractive title on the board index that could cause that result. The current trends of flashy effects (although some people get tired of seeing this) might be a selling point too.

To be honest I have to admit I kinda fall under the category of “A lot of the times I don't want to give feedback I just want to download”. Because sometimes the creation is so good that its not really worth pointing out very minor flaws, most of the time I think that the creator would probably spot as they re-test the character.

And true I would be even more likely less inclined if the rules on feedback were too strict having said that sometimes if it really is a good character I think it probably would be acceptable to post things like “nice character” or “great release”.

I always give feedback in a civil manner, pointing out the flaws I found in a character.
The only time I go "batshit" with feedback is when the author hasn't listened to feedback after it has been given numerous times (e.g. Alexlexus or Kong).

At the end of the feedback, I often give a small input about what I think of the character, and what are the main points to work on.

And true I would be even more likely less inclined if the rules on feedback were too strict having said that sometimes if it really is a good character I think it probably would be acceptable to post things like “nice character” or “great release”.
That's what happens in topic by Vans or POTS. :P

I often leave a list of things that need to be fixed, as seen on my very first post, and a compliment to the author for his efforts.

Looking at the poll

Im actually suprised no one has voted for the last option (A lot of the times I don't want to give feedback I just want to download.), because im sure alot of people dont want to leave feeback.

Alot of topics on the forums get far more views than replies thats for sure.

Those who would've voted for the last option haven't even visited this thread nor anything outside of releases.

lol I forgot about that, Good point.

However on the poll it states "alot of the time" meaning that theres still a chance they might post something, so theres possibly up to a 20-25% chance that a lurking member would actually vote this option.

I voted for last option but it's only because I'm not coder or spriter so I'm not good feedbacker as rest of you. Sometimes I do as Option 3 when I truly like a char, I tested him deeply  and I know that creator revieve my opinion. However I try keep demands to minimum, and I always suggest something  like "you could add/change this" instead of "do this/that/it" or "you should" like alot ppl post.

You don't need to be a good coder or spriter to critique. If there's a legitimate glitch or inconsistency there's nothing wrong with pointing it out.
