Yeah, what the title said. This columnist and economist made an article about how the bad economy in the US (low-paying jobs, unemployment, college degrees ending in McDonalds-like jobs, etc) are making young adults to escape into fantasy themes (videogames, comics, cosplay, etc.) instead activating economy by looking jobs. Just like already happens in Japan since 20 years ago.

And I think this is not just in Japan and US, this is happening all over the world, so this could be something serious... and understandable, considering how capitalism works actually. Interesting article, especially for the ones who were already in this fantasy-like world, which we aren't few here in the forum.

Cosplay is hardly a factor on what's currently hurting our economy. I almost feel like this is a parody article.
Sony took it down :( Guess it gave people the wrong idea. rip amberlamps.
96/150 Chars, I'm not dead yet....the true surprise is in my thread.

The fatal flaw in this argument is that anyone who's ever done even mildly serious cosplay knows that that shit gets expensive quick.  So to be able to do cosplay in the first place you pretty much need to already have a job.

It seems more like they don't want to admit the U.S(and the world in general) fucked up
God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off. ~Tyler Durden; Fight Club

  • does this look like the face of mercy?
tldr : people enjoying things we dont enjoy means they are escaping into fantasy worlds to avoid facing reality!!

Next up, how people enjoying cartoons with horses and not enjoying japanese moe cartoons means they are clinging to their youth and dont want to be part of the mature anime viewers of the world.

Did we read the same article ? the general reactions I jsut read belong to the average article that talks aobut this, sure; but this particular articel was pretty decent and not patronizing, if anythign it seemed like it only missed the line that says that it's better that people are scaping to harmless stuff as opossed to drugs adn alcohol like they/we usually do.

The title of the article is "why cosplay is bad for the economy". That sounds negative. Unless it's trying to say "it's a bad sign because if it's there, it means the economy is already bad, see Japan", but that's quite a hidden message.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

the title has the word "sign" on it , "why is a big belly a sign of bad health" is a similar title.

"It's a bad sign for the economy" is just as easily understood as "a bad presage that the economy is on its way to crash", which is a way to call it a just plain bad thing.
If the title does mean what you say, then that's poor wording, and writing it like "a symptom of bad economy" would have been much better. Ambiguity will always go the wrong way.

Agreed.

I have looked at prices for decent quality cloth and other materials for cosplay and they are not cheap. Heck, sometimes, you can get a nice suit for the money that was spent on the materials alone.

i know some local groups who make their own stuff and they are pretty good. they even made a bumlebee costume complete with lights and moving parts like the car door on his back and the visor. but the raw materials to make those stuff ain't that cheap and it's time consuming.

I remember trying to learn how to sew in my old anime club just for cos-play purposes rofl. I uh sucked at it. I eventually was going to try to just buy an outfit but even that was like 500 bucks for the char I wanted at the time.
You'll fix chuchoryu ? Sounds like a plan. How about you code him from scratch instead ?
