I know right!? Me!? SPRITE!? BWAHAHAHAHA!

But in all seriousness, I thought it was about time I tried to do something again. You can thank Ryoga for somewhat perking my interests again and to Chamat for getting me attempting this again. Though whether or not I'll actually try to do things for the Midnight Bliss & Shock Project myself is debatable. I'm still not a good spriter by any means, and I haven't sprited anything in 3-4 years.

Some of the more ancient sprites (found in my ancient thread years ago). Keep in mind that these have NOT been touched in 3-4 years, and this was back when I first attempted hi-res style (the only one I actively tried to fix up was Reimu. Komachi was the very last one and was in beta before I stopped):

Touhou Hi-Res Sprites (Guilty Gear styled):

Komachi Onozuka:

Reimu Hakurei:

Remilia Scarlet:

Sakuya Izayoi:

Youmu Konpaku:

And now for more modern time stuff!

1st sprite is the original sprite by Chamat. 2nd sprite is my fix up of that sprite (only the eye was fixed up. I moved it down some, to make it seem more natural. 3rd sprite is my starting attempt of actually DOING animations believe it or not. The only thing I'm working on right now is the skirt, using Reisen's as sort of an example (she's the only one with a short enough skirt I think that works closely enough to help me with this...). It doesn't SEEM bad, but it feels a bit....off methinks. Not because of me not touching most of the inner colors, but because of the overall look of the flowing of the skirt. It doesn't seem....right.

This character, by the way, is an original character for my RPG Maker game, Touhou Fantasy. I've been needing in-battle sprites for her for a long time now, and since Chamat made the original sprite (such a cool guy he is~), and since he's busy, I decided what the heck, I'll try to give it a go. Of course, how often this thread is going to be updated depends on how much motivation I have to work on this. I know just how rough spriting can be and how long it can take (and I do have other things to do such as my LPs, working on the FFWiki for whatever reason, and of course, working on my RPG Maker game whenever I get around to it). Any help, criticisms, feedback, whatever, would be GREATLY appreciated! No, this won't be for MUGEN (I wouldn't have the patience to make a full character out of her), so don't worry about that. If more details are needed on what I NEED to do, well...I'll post that as I go!

To think I'd actually be spriting yet again after 3-4 years of not spriting. :S

In case if it's not obvious, I have no idea what I'm doing! It LOOKS nice so far, but I don't think it's going to loop right. And that doesn't include the shading and obviously the rest of the animation either @_@;;

Yeah, I don't know if I'll ever go back to retouch on those. Reimu alone took like a month to do, then I remember it being shorter and shorter with each sprite (about half time. So Reimu took about a month, Remilia about 15 days, Youmu about 7, Sakuya about 4...).

I do have GIMP and Photoshop, but I've never really used those to animate at all so no idea how to do that lol. Though so far she's not looking TOO bad hm? I knew that there was still some stuff to fix up, but eh. I'll get to those after I get the wave done (I'm aiming for possibly 7-9 frames, depending on how it turns out).

Ah right, I should probably show the sketches. Lemme find them real quick...

Sketches:

Sprites:

This one is unused. The one below this is the current overworld spritesheet.

As for other animations, I had in mind for her to like move to and fro from her feet to her toes, and then back again. Though that would mean I'd have to refix the skirt locations and stuff AGAIN, but...hmmm. I do intend on making the bottom part of her shirt thing (the black part) to have some motion to it as well, and maybe that flower a bit too. Probably won't do more than 5 sprites a day though, just to save myself some sanity lol.

Ah yes. I should specify that. The first one was done by the original concept artist a couple years ago (whom mysteriously vanished and has never spoke to me again since that time...), the second by a different artist. I myself did nothing on the arts (the only art I had influence and a hand in was Chaos's, and that was to give SOME resemblence to FF's Chaos). Dunno what you mean by good point though o.o??

I should pick up drawing again someday too...I haven't drawn in 10+ years now though so that'd be worse than me spriting probably @_@;; Some of my last works are on my Deviantart, so maybe I can post them here if ya'll are interested in seeing em?

I'm more of a mimic artist than an artist artist. I have trouble drawing anything from my head without SOME kind of reference...

Some examples of my art:

These 2 were the very last ones I fixed up in Photoshop (when I scanned these, the drawings were pretty smeared and smushed from years of being in a folder...). Some others...

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Yeeeeeah bringing back 10+ year old art!

Also, holy crap that was a fast fix o_O. That's actually what I was trying to aim for with that animation too. This job is harder than I remember lol @_@

EDIT - I'll more than likely use that as my base for the rest of the animations, no doubt about that. I'll still probably attempt to finish mine just to see how I would've handled it. I'm quite curious as to how it would've turned out now lol.

Just to show that I tried at least! I checked the animation in Fighter's Factory (didn't save gif cuz obvious transparency issues, and I don't know how to do gifs otherwise really), and it seemed okayish aside from looping back nicely...if someone wants to make that into a GIF, by all means, go for it. Ignore the very first and very last sprites though (first is obvious, and last is a duplicate of the sprite before it).

Hey, if anything, I tried ya? Still going to use CVS's animation though because it flows a lot better than mine does. ^^;;

I was thinking something more like this would be fitting (obviously her hands are behind her so it'd be slightly different, but you get the idea).

(Yes, I pulled that out of the Database thingie here....don't have time to find an actual gif of it!)

So nothing new yet as well...I haven't had the motivation to work on this. On top of that, I am also waiting to see what my original concept artist will be doing with his sprite version of Hope. I have seen a early prototype, and well....I'll leave it at that. Dunno if he wants me to show it to anyone or not, so I shall wait. The problem though for me now is when/if he finishes this sprite, not only will IT have to be animated, but I'll have to decide which of the two I'll want to use. We'll just see what happens I suppose, but I may still work on Chamat's version nonetheless to at least have some progress with that while waiting on this.

However, everytime I look at the sprite and think about spriting, I get put off really, really quickly. I really want to work on it myself and get some stuff done, but at the same time, it's like I go "Ugh! But I want to do other things that I may or may not even do at all!". Yes, I would love to learn spriting since it would aid me (and probably would be a fun hobby if I ever get over my perfectionism with myself)...just all that time and dedication is what puts me off. Any advice on this little issue? I know I probably should start with something smaller than this, but I'm working on THIS particular one just so it's done for my game at the very least.

Sorry if that seems to be like one giant wall of complaining or whatnot from me. I tend to do that from time to time I think ^^;; Also apologize for the lack of updates in this particular post. I'll try to make it up in the next one (assuming I'm not busy LPing or anything else like sitting there doing nothing the entire day ^^;; ).

(Also, darn you Auto-Merger!!! >_< )

So I did a TINY bit of work, though I think I need to do one more animation before I start going backwards with the frames. Hmmmm....oh, and this is the black part of her shirt (so the very bottom, where it overlaps her skirt).

On a sidenote, after looking at her concept art, I just realized that the blue parts of her shirt aren't actually part of the shirt itself, but a part of the shawl it seems. Or maybe I'm seeing it wrong still...I don't know! @_@;;

Current update. Original concept artist is attempting to do Hope's battle sprites in a more Soku-ish style (no offense to Chamat and CVS, as their help in the other sprites was very much welcomed), so there's that. He's only got this much done so far though, and not everything is done yet. Hopefully, he'll animate this for me as well, though that might be asking a lot since there's still a lot to do for animations...

Yeah, I realize I'm not doing much spriting at all, but motivation has gone out the window for spriting yet again. ;_;

And so the update is done by the original concept artist (whose name I am still keeping hidden, but some people know who he is). The colors are used directly from the original sprite, though some modifications were done to the sprite even from the concept art, such as the skirt.

I know I know...I'm not really doing anything MYSELF as per usual, but ehh...maybe this isn't something for me eh? ;__;

OMG! I'm actually alive! And I'm actually attempting spriting again! This...is a beta so far.

It uses a slightly modified version of Guilty Gear's May's face (only eye colors and eyebrows. I haven't touched the mouth yet). I'm just outlining things right now, but...I'm not sure if this is going to turn out ok or not. I need to keep her height shorter than May's (May being 5'2", and I'm assuming that Maria here is shorter than her), which is a task in itself...and since I'm no spriter, this is turning out to be...a monumental task all on its own. ^^;;

References I'm using for the sprite:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

I am trying to keep it as close to the original sprite as you see there, while using the images as references. I...don't know how well this is turning out at all tbh. ;__;

Why Maria of all people? And this version of her? Because I like Maria despite not knowing much about Castlevania, and this design is a simpler design to work with. *shrugs*

More tinkering with the outlining today~

I did check this sprite against May's, and it seems like she's going to be shorter after all~ How bout that?

May's reference sprite:

Yes, you can tell the face is the same pretty much, because it fit perfectly for Maria's. Other than that, this has mostly been used as a height difference than anything else. I did use Shannon a bit for the sleeves/skirt bit, but not too terribly much considering she's well...taller than Maria by far. I didn't do the other arm yet because I'm not sure how I'm going to handle that. I feel the chest isn't...quite right either, if you know what I mean. That's something else I've always had trouble dealing with in spriting. @_@;

Also, hands. I hate doing hands. >_<

Will need to get the legs/feet set up later. I think this is good enough for today. Took about 30 minutes-1 hour to set all of this up. Hopefully she's not too wide/too unanatomically correct? ^^;;

More tinkering, and the more I sprite this, the more I feel it gets worse and worse...

*Moved the left arm over some, thinned it up some, and redid the arm/added the right arm using Shannon's arms essentially.
*Added the feet and legs, though I feel the legs are...short? Not sure, but the feet look god awful. I have problems with feet like I do with hands.
*Redid the chest a little, but not sure if that looks right or not.
*Added the rest of her hair that I forgot last time.

Criticism and help is much appreciated...

I haven't touched the elbow yet as I'm not entirely sure how to go about that. Looking at Shannon's sprite, there's really no big curve difference (though again, she has sleeves so maybe it's different). I'll look more into it...not sure if there's any good characters to look at for that. I do need to redo the ascot though as it's terrible looking, as well as the chest (it...just looks bad too). Shading has been added massively everywhere, and also for some reason decided to slim up her back (why, I don't know. I don't think it looks as good this way...I might revert it back). Dunno if I have the right hair colors or not either...again, I'm terrible when it comes to colors/coloring. ^^;; I do think the shoes came out alright though, what with the colors/shading/proportions so I guess that's something? ^^;

I'm also trying to refrain from using Valeri's sprite too much as a reference sprite as I don't want to end up being too similar to it. I still appreciate ya helping out on it Valeri! Though I must learn how to sprite a bit myself, otherwise I'm not going to get past this stage that I'm at. ^^;;: I am trying to do hi-res spriting (akin to Guilty Gear), though I don't think the current sprite I have right now is very Guilty Gear-ish...

Of course, I don't mind seeing people attempt to fix up/do sprites that I might do if they see fit~ Gives them a little challenge if I do say so myself~

Added the braids in. I think they actually came out really well (no, I didn't use anything but one official art as reference), which surprises me. Guess braids aren't super hard to do after all.

This might be the last revision for the sprite for now as I'm honestly not sure what else I can do to make it better. I again am by no means that great of a spriter, and I'm terrible with colors overall, so...who knows? Maybe I'll come back at a later date and touch up on the sprite again, if I ever do. Or maybe I'll keep working on it over time.

Note to self to fix on Maria's sprite however:

*Fix the size of her hand that's underneath her right hand (so the hand below the other) as it seems far too big for her actual handsize.
*Maybe fix the right arm so that it has an elbow? Not entirely sure as I'm not sure how to do elbows really, nor not sure how to angle the arm to accomodate the elbow change.
*Fix the shading in various places.
*Fix the belt/sash and perhaps the tiny part of her back that you can see. Not sure on where the back needs to be...
*Change the face perhaps to not be so May-like
*Fix the shape of her hair perhaps
*Fix that goddamn ascot! >_<
*Fix the bust size probably. It's really REALLY hard to gauge her bust size from the official arts (despite some of them showing her to be quite...voluptuous or whatever. Which seems very strange for a 12-year old to be that way but...), and I'm terrible with doing breasts overall anyways...
*Fix her left arm (the arm on the right) to be more...bending? Not as hidden by her shirt? I don't know.

Anything else that I may have missed, feel free to let me know. Still learning so yeah...I probably shouldn't be doing these kinds of sprites already but...^^;;

*Changed shading on hair and skin. Clothes will be next later. The hair and skin shading was borrowed from Millia Rage of Guilty Gear, since that seemed to be the way to go (plus I needed someone with blonde hair to work with, and Millia was the first to come to mind. I guess I could've used Ky or Bridget but eh!).

You can see the differences in the shading here:

I don't really have anyone with pink from Guilty Gear I can use for shading references so...the dress might be a bit tougher to shade than normal. The boots...well...those will get fixed later on. Still working out the shading differences and proportions right now from top to bottom. That elbow is going to bother me a lot...

Fixed the shading by using one of Millia's pink palettes. Thanks to Darth Akuryo for finding the palette for me. Palette is here:

That's all I'm going to do today on her. Not in the best of moods as I found out my grandpa passed away this morning and then family issues regarding that...

So...this was something I was working on...

But thanks to being such a dumbass and not checking, I accidentally saved it as JPEG (why the hell is JPEG the default for Paint?!). So, this sprite which WAS really good ended up being completely ruined. Then I tried a second time...

And now it just looks plain freaking awful...like...you have no idea how angry I am at myself and Paint for losing such a great sprite, then spending another hour trying to get back to that point only to end up with this terrible sprite...goddamnit all...I haven't been THIS pissed off at myself in forever, but really now. Lenna ended up looking TOO manly in the newer version, and I had it perfect in the original...

The last one is what pose I'm using. The other two images are what I'm using as references. Well..unless someone knows how to save a sprite saved in JPEG format...>_>;;

So yeah, 1 hour and a perfectly good sprite lost because stupid goddamn me. >___>

EDIT - A little update...

So I tried to slim her down some and whatnot. At least she looks more feminine than manly...I think. God this is gonna take a lot to fix this up. Also, hair. Not my thing.

Fuuu...
Now, onto critique.
The second one actually looks better from a proportion standpoint outside of the face.
See that's what happens when people edit their posts.

Don't stick to that old facial structure.

I tried to attempt a somewhat better head shape and proportions based on your reference, but it doesn't match the hair. That is something entirely up to you.

Also, stick to a limited color count for any part of the body, don't go adding pointless colors you'll only see in one area for one or two pixels!
New body seems a smidge better though.

*Shwa taps Xenomic's shoulder*
You can do it! Keep it up!

Ehhhh...I guess it's better than the old face but I hate hair now lol...

References used:

*Ougon Musou Kyoko's Shannon - Only her face right now, as it was the closest to the pose that I wanted. Only things changed from original face is eye color (big whoop) and the mouth (one pixel removed, big whoop). The entire head was actually used, but I redid the hair from scratch essentially and had to add her ear to the sprite. Hair shouldn't be this hard to do! Also, took me like 3 hours just to get this far...terrible! Mostly because I'd get started on it, and then immediately delete it because it wasn't working out. Mostly by using ironically Shannon's head as the base (I think I tried to use Guilty Gear's Dizzy and Jam as head bases too. I even tried to make a head from scratch myself but that didn't pan out so well). I dunno how you guys make it look so easy lol.

If there's anything to do with the outlining of the head, feel free to let me know now since I'd like to get the head outlines done before moving onto the body. I did put in the outline for her neck accessory thing. That wasn't easy to do either...ugh...also hopefully when I do the body this time, she won't end up with super huge breasts like last time. @_@;;

I used both the cherry blossom image and black background images from before as references, alternating between the two for the hair. It kinda helped a bit...also, she doesn't look like a man now I think. : S

It looks like it's taking good shape so far. Though I feel like the belt is TOO far down as opposed to the images...what do you guys think? Think it should be moved up some??

Also, that skirt is surprisingly difficult. I'm used to frilly skirts like Maria's or Remilia's, not simple ones like this where there's hardly any creases. x_x;;

I do think I got the body build right though. It looks slim enough to fit her (the clothes aren't exactly form fitting I think), and her breasts are actually the right size...I think.

Adjusted the belt about 4-5 pixels higher. It think it looks a LOT better now personally. Also put in the right arm as well as part of both legs (where her right leg (our left) cuts off is where the boots will start). I feel like the arm and legs could use more work though...again, they're not easy for me at all. Though I do think the hand looks okayish...

That is a really gorgeous animation! Thank you for this, I really like it! o.o!

I'm honestly curious as to how you'd handle Lenna now in your own art style, seeing as how well you've handled Maria (or even a shock animation for Maria~ What? Don't give me that look people!). Really great spriter you are. o_o

There probably won't be any spriting for me tomorrow since I'll be gone for over 12 hours (3-4 hour drive to where we need to go for funeral just ONE way, so about 6-8 hours on the road alone...). Probably wouldn't be in the mood to do anything like that anyways...

Yes, that is for Tiki (Chiki in Japan I believe).

Just a FYI for everyone, it MAY be a while before I get back into spriting again. I need to get more videos done for my channel (only got one more video left to upload before I'm out of videos) and am currently playing Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- on emulator for the Final Fantasy Wiki. Once I get enough done for both videos (and finish the game), I'll probably return to working on both this sprite as well as my RPG Maker game.

I have also found out (from both Tekkanon and a Japanese forum) that there is a RPG for the Sega Saturn called The Legend of Heroes III which has special effects for characters (with matching portraits) for burn, freeze, and shock. If anyone knows how to rip sprites from a Saturn game, that'd be fantastic as I'd like to get these sprites (including at least the normal sprites) as well as the portraits. I do not know if the rest of the games in that series has them though either.

So I decided for the first time in like...10 years or so to do some art. Granted, it's not from the top of my head as I was using a reference image, but really...looking at it, it's not that bad. There's some problems here and there yeah, but it's not bad for a first try with Photoshop and using a mouse. No I don't have a tablet, and none of the scanners here at home work so I didn't try with paper and pencil. Maybe I should give paper and pencil a shot though?

It's really hard to keep the mouse from screwing things up, lemme tell you. If you guys wanna color this in, go for it! I'm terrible with coloring lol. And feel free to give criticism and feedback if you so desire~

For those who do not know who it is, this is Nowi from Fire Emblem: Awakening. Yes, I'm aware there's some proportion issues going on, but it was hard enough getting myself to do this with the mouse. Ugh...x_x;;

I do have some sketches that, when we get a working scanner, I'll scan and upload. Been practicing on nothing but art this entire week, mainly on doing faces (haven't gotten around to doing hair yet) in the frontal position (doing angled views shouldn't be that difficult I wouldn't think...I intend on practicing those next once I get the frontal view stuff done, including full body proportions (no clothes for now) in the frontal view). All mostly using Nowi as my base and reference. Hopefully she doesn't screw me over in doing art for later characters seeing as she's supposed to be short as all hell. ^^;;

So, here's my line of practicing:

A) Frontal Views

1) Head/faces - I believe I got this down now for the most part. Only have trouble getting the sides of the head to curve easily into the jawline to chin area for some reason. I generally start my drawings with one eye, then do the other eye, then set the sides of the head, then nose, then do the jawlines to chin, and then finally the mouth (followed by the ears).

2) Full body proportion - This will require me to actually NOT draw super huge, which has always been a problem for me. I'm not sure how I'll be able to manage this on paper and pencil...especially when I start doing characters that are of normal average heights and not like 4' something like Nowi is...

3) Hair - I don't know why, but I struggle to get the hair right. I can't seem to find a good place to start with the hair at all, nor where to go with the hair in some instances...

4) Facial expressions - This will come after I master hair mostly because hair can affect how facial expressions look sometimes. Granted, I guess I SHOULD do this as #2 instead of full body proportions but...

5) Clothes - Seeing as #2 will be just a nude model with nothing on it, I'll need to learn how to do this eventually. I wouldn't think it'd be too difficult to do though with Nowi as my base, but for other more extravagant characters it may become a pain to do...

6) Arm/hand positions - Hands and arms, for some reason, have always been a thorn in my side. It's all the way down here mostly because well...the face and body should be mastered first before actually doing fancywork with things like the hands and feet.

7) Body positions/poses - Such as sitting, walking, excited, etc. I feel like once I master the first 6 in this list, this shouldn't be too difficult to do??

B) Angled Views
C) Side Views
D) Angled Back Views
E) Back Views

B and C will follow the same structure as A, although I'd imagine doing angled views will be easier once I master how to do frontal views. It's just moving some lines here and there a bit longer than others after all, right?? Side views will probably be a pain in the arse to do though...

So yeah, if anyone has any good suggestions/tutorials/whatever (aside from practice a lot, which I already know about and have been doing for the past week lol), feel free to help me out! I really want to get as good as I can get with drawing in particular. I really WANT to be able to do my own art for my characters, and be able to produce gorgeous art for my favorite characters out there. ^^

I am currently using Mark Crilley's tutorials on YouTube to try and learn these better, as well as some tutorials from Naschi on DeviantArt to help improve my art. So far, it seems like Mark's tutorials have been helping me immensely...we'll see when I scan and upload some of this art though >_>

Thanks for the links Cyronemesis. I think links #1, 4, and 5 will be of the most use to me, since I'm aiming more for the manga/anime style instead of realistic for the time being. Granted, that's not to say realistic drawing tutorials wouldn't help but...^^;

For those curious as to what exactly type of art style I'm looking at:

http://shinxenomic.imgur.com/all

A lot of what I uploaded here kinda falls into that category. Not all, but a lot. Fire Emblem: Awakening art in general is what I was kinda going after (that's not to say that I don't want to adapt to my own art style and whatnot, but it's a good place to start as any). I should be working with Tiki instead of Nowi as she's an adult female as opposed to a more childlike female...>_<

Well, I think I got the head and face pretty much good to go. I just need to learn how to do facial and eye expressions a bit more, and I'll have the face at least mastered. Think I got my kind of eyes I want to use for females too, though I may interchange them at points. We'll see since it varies from character to character anyways!

I WAS going to attempt full body proportions next, as stated on #2 on the list, but I think I'm jumping the gun on that bit. So I'm doubling back and working more on heads and faces more (mostly females still. I'd imagine doing a male head and face wouldn't be too difficult. Just have to make the eyes narrower, give a bridge of the nose, and give thicker eyebrows, as well as probably a squarer chin (?). Hair though...hair is actually quite difficult to do, as that's my next task in learning the head/face. I think the characters I'm using for this exercise aren't good examples to learn (Tiki and Nowi respectively, though Nah's SHOULDN'T be as difficult as it is....but it is. It's the simplest of the three, but it's still hard! This is without the braids btw, as the braids themselves I have a plan on how to do them thanks to Mark's video). Any good characters to reference with starting hair practice at all??

In the meantime, still waiting to find a method of scanning and uploading...we never installed the new printer because the old printer is still working (yet the scanner is not), and none of my buds have a scanner so I'm kinda screwed on that front. >_>;;

Granted, this was in Photoshop and not with pencil and paper where I'm much better at controlling myself, but this is generally how my general guidelines are. I know that this isn't the most effective way, and it really doesn't work with making sure things are proportioned correctly. I'm trying to avoid using too many guidelines, and would really REALLY appreciate feedback or advice on what to do to improve myself.

I have yet to actually attempt hair by the way. That was my next goal before I started wondering if I was making any progress on the face at all. I may do one for the angled view as well, for those interested in seeing how I do angled views. I don't know how to do a tilted up or tilted down head yet with the neck and facial features...just a frontal and angled. This is after a week's worth of constant practice on it, using Mark Crilley's videos and Naschi's tutorials. Whether or not those are the best idea to learn or not, I cannot say...

Keep in mind, this is just a ROUGH sketch in Photoshop, not with pencil and paper. It's kinda similar though however so...

So while I'm still waiting to actually find a way to scan and upload my stuff, I've finally moved on from doing just heads to the shoulders, arms, hands, and torso. The problem is...I have no idea WHERE to even begin on the placement of each. I know the shoulders are about 1/2 a face away the side of the face (though this can change I believe. For instance, someone who looks like around a 12-year-old or so, wouldn't have the same build as someone that's a full-grown adult). The problem from there is how the arms should look, how the arms connect to the torso, and the size of the torso itself.

I just don't have any good tutorials for these at all, and it's kinda frustrating to not have some kind of way to do these, unlike where there were a couple good tutorials for the head. So if anyone can help out and/or give advice on these specific body parts (note, I am still working on the female body, frontal and angled view), feel free to do so. ^^;;

Nowi was kinda used as a base again, but this was my attempt at a quick sketch (less than 10 minutes or so) of a head in an angled view, with some shading and heavier line art. Could be better of course, but it's not the world's worse I think. I've yet to read the Loomis books I have, nor either of the other books I have, and felt like doing a quick practice to see how I'd do the shading. Light source is from the left. I know my shading isn't exactly stellar either, but I think it's not TOO terrible...maybe.

Redid this today and will be using this to be making a face. Don't mind the squareness of the jaw, that's just an outline! Hopefully this will help me out with making a face better. >_<

Couple new ones~ Haven't been practicing enough as I should due to running like 4 projects but...

Bottom one is the newest one. I attempted to do another image of Nowi for the last thing, to see what I could do with the new techniques I learned. It's...a bit better than before? I'm not really sure...*sigh*

2-3 hours I spent wasting paper to try and get circles to not look lopsided, and trying to get faces to not look lopsided. This is about the best I could get with faces after 2-3 hours...and even then something seems off. I don't know...maybe I should just give it up? It's quite frustrating to say the least. Ugh...I tried to avoid adding any realism to them, though the nose on the second image is realistic. >_>

Come on, don't throw in the towel so easily! Thing like this happen to other artists all the time, myself included. Even though sometimes I want to take a flame thrower to my sketchbook, I still push myself to draw. The process is painful when you start, no doubt about that, but if you continue and push yourself harder and really focus, you CAN become good.

Sappy stuff, I know, but hey, it's true.

You should check this out if you have the chance. http://beyondarttutorials.com/articles/conquer-drawing-frustration/

Now to go back to lurking and being shy. :ninja:

I just don't know. Right now I'm just being super frustrated at myself (which is normal in anything I do) that I can't seem to pull this one simple thing off. It's like...it's just ONE circle. Why can I not do a good enough circle where it's not lopsided? Why can I not do straight lines or line things up parallel to one another? I just don't understand.

Like, I can understand the people I'm speaking with to do still life or things from realism over the anime/manga style I'm trying, but if I can't even do circles or straight lines, then what's the point? I'm going to keep trying what I've been trying with the heads until I get it right. Doing anything else at this point just won't do it for me I think. I know WHAT I want to do, it's just EXECUTING it that I'm not doing, and that's what's frustrating me.

Also, I was lieeeeeeeed to about the eyes on anime/manga styled art being on that line. Apparently the eyebrow is ALWAYS on that line regardless of the art style. Ffffff....

Well, looking at your work, here's some advice I can give you:

1) Those circles that you say you're having trouble with? It looks as though you try to draw them in one go. Try sketching them instead, then cleaning up the lines when you have something you're satisfied with. You could also just use a compass. A tee square and set square would work really well for your lines as well, but that depends on just how meticulous you want to get with alignment.

2) To make sure your eyes are aligned properly, draw 2 horizontal lines for where they should fall. Eyes are also always an eye space apart. Meaning, whatever the size of one of your eyes is, that should be the size of the gap that separates them.

3) Ears typically run from the base of the eye to the tip of the nose.

4) Try drawing the mouth closer to the nose and have the jaw and chin align with the new placement.

You're not terrible, you just need to practice more.

1) Actually, I do do the circles in one go. I think I was pretty much told to not sketch them due to the mess it can make.

2) Horizontal lines eh? The problem for me now, since I'm used to this format and not the old one I used to use, is determining where the lines would fall at now. I kinda have this to fall back on for now that someone on /ic/ did real quick:

3) Aye, I've been trying that (though with the non-human ears I've been using, not doing a very good job of doing that at all). I'm assuming it's along the top of the eye too to the tip of the nose, like I've done in earlier sketches?

4) Reason mouths tend to be where they are is due to what I learned, in that the nose is halfway between the eyes and chin, and the mouth is halfway between the nose and chin thereafter. Which is something that doesn't actually look right now that I think about it (but I think that's how it is in anime style? I know it's not in realistic style anyways...).

I guess my more recent stuff is a lot better than my older stuff:

By far better than that...*shivers*

It's distinctly possible that part of the source of your frustration is what you are effectively trying to do is imitate drawings that themselves are imitations of a properly drawn figure. What 'anime style' usually consists of is simplification of a more realistic form. If you're just studying the simplification without understanding how they got to that point, then you aren't making the most productive use of your time; effectively just reproducing work with maybe a few tweaks here and there.

Before you can start bending and breaking the rules, you have to know the rules first. Get a working grasp on the real human form, and you will find that making abstract versions is easier.

I kinda know how the real human form works for the most part. I did do some drawings for those a while back, though not as much as say...the anime/manga/Awakening-styled art I've been trying to do. Really, I think it's A) I'm trying to do one big circle instead of breaking it up so that it's even on all sides, and B) I'm just not positioning the facial details right. I feel that if I can fix those two problems, the heads will be fine. I mean, they're not that bad right now I think...just the two issues that I mentioned that are hurting it the most (I do need to learn to deal with 3/4 views...those are kinda hard on me, especially with the eyes...ugh...).

Hmm...that should be a useful thing to use for my practice. The eyeline was from me being told for anime/manga style, the eye can lie right on the mid axis line (apparently that's for the eyebrow regardless of art style), so that was a goof up on both ends. Getting that eye width is surprisingly difficult as I really don't have any way to determine it outside of guessing where it will be. Would the nose still be in the same spot though is the question if the eyes are moved down any?

For some reason I never thought of the mouth being that long, and I don't know why. Huh...

For the 3/4th view, how would one go about adding the little curves around the side of the face like that? I have never figured that out, nor really tried due to not knowing how that works. x_x;

And that chin...it's so hard lol. Like...I know feminine chins are rounder than male chins but for some reason I cannot for the life of me get the right placement of the chin. Maybe I should show what I normally do in steps and upload it to my DA and show it here??

I do appreciate you giving me this quick guide though. It should help me out a bit. I did try to draw some of the official images (as you may have seen already in the thread) but I don't think I actually LEARNED anything from drawing them >_<

I do think another big problem, as addressed earlier, is that I'm stuck between realistic and anime/manga style. Again, still going with Awakening as my basis, but I don't think I know which style that really uses after all. x_x;;

EDIT - Found this and uploaded it to share. This is about 3-4 weeks old, so this was before I started all this stuff with Loomis. Attempt at a realistic head. Problems do persist as you can see (things not lining up, etc.), but overall...why does this seem BETTER than what I'm doing now?! Look at that chin! That's like the best damn chin I've ever done! >_<

The longish mouth in the samples is mostly exaggeration, so it's not exactly a hard detail.

I honestly feel it's important to repeat that before you try to mess with a type of illustration that's more abstract, you want to have a good handle on the basics first, this case meaning you need to get some more realistic drawing in. A number of the questions you have there, such as curvature of the face, spacing of facial features, etc, are best learned through observation and practice. I'm typing up this reply in a bit of a hurry, but here's a few pointers in text I can mention:

- When you're drawing just about anything involving the body, you also need to think about what goes under the surface; before you put down hard lines for your facial features or any other topographical details, you need to make sure that it makes sense with what should be underneath, the bones and muscles.
- Even artists who are mostly known for cartoon styled work tended to do a lot of life drawing. Bruce Timm's work on Batman TAS, which later basically became the defacto look for animated DC stuff for years, only came about after years of doing life drawing and more realistic work. Why? Because with this knowledge, he had a good idea of where he could simplify things while still keeping the core idea of it!
- Either you are raising the contrast quite a bit in your scans, or you are not using much in terms of construction lines / guidelines to plan out placement of things. If this is the case, this is likely a very large part of your frustration. Even those with decades of experience use them, because they help to keep everything in place and in perspective.
- For the most part, the various facial features tend to be aligned to some degree. For example, the spacing between eyes tends to be wide enough to fit a 3rd eye. Assuming the mouth is in a neutral pose, the corners of that mouth would line up around the mid point of each eye. Ears tend to begin around the top of the eye line/brow and end around the bottom of the nose.
- When working in pencil, start your construction lines very lightly at most. Only begin to put any serious pressure in your linework when you have things worked out; it will save you time and effort and a bit of a mess if you realize later something isn't quite right and need to erase it.
- Did I mention life drawing? Because seriously, Life drawing.

So continue doing what I was doing with the realistic drawing then is what you're saying? If so (and as much as I really don't want to do realistic drawings for some reason lol...), I'll give it a go I suppose. As for your pointers:

1) Hm...I guess that's why in these art books they show off the bones and muscles so much. I never understood why they did that as you generally never see them so I just ignored those for the most part and focused on where things were placed, distances between various features (such as the one eye width and the width between eyes/nose, nose/chin, and mouth/chin), and size of each feature. I did try to make it at least make some sense to a degree though...

2) Blech...I was afraid of that lol. Mostly because there's something about realistic style that puts me off (I couldn't tell you what it is either. Maybe because all of my realistic stuff looks like utter trash still). I understand what you're getting at (as well as everyone else that's told me to go with realism more than anime/manga)

3) Oh, referring to this particular drawing? Yeah, this one I didn't use any form of guidelines at all (in fact, there was about a week or two where I refused to use them after learning how to use the first set of guidelines for the head because I was trying to do it without them). With my more recent ones, such as the image before the realistic head, I have been using guidelines In fact, this image right here, which I used from Proko's video which was a simplification of Loomis' book, is what I've been using:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

I omit the curved lines from the ear to the chin though, as I never understood what it was for and didn't think it really did anything for me at all. But overall, this is the exact same model I use for all of my current drawings, and I think it's helped me a lot more than the other model I used.

4) Aye, I have an odd pressure with my pencil which makes it hard for me to draw lightly (though that's not always the case, for example see the previous image in the spoiler). Though doesn't seem to matter much when my erasers are garbage and smudge things up anyways, hence why I always try to get things right on the first attempt. >_>;;

5) I did that years and years ago I remember (my dad told me to draw an American football some time ago, and I never did that. Nor did I ever draw my computer tower like I was going to. I'm assuming this is what you're talking about with still life?). Though not with people as well...I don't think I'm going to get people to sit there and let me draw them for very long. But yeah...maybe I should like...look up some photos and try to draw.

I did use this for my reference when I was drawing that realistic image too:

There's a number of good reasons why you have people trying to get you to shy away from strictly learning an animated / manga style of working; it's actually more limiting than anything if/ more likely when you find yourself needing to work outside of the limited format, because you'll realize that you don't have the proper knowledge or skillset to work beyond the shortcuts and often bad habits that are formed from limiting your learning. Heck, I can actually think of a few programs at various schools where if you try to present work in a portfolio that is manga/anime based, it usually leads to a quick dismissal and rejection!

Regarding Proko, I am guessing you are referring to the video set about portraits, am I correct? Haven't had a chance to really watch them, but I have heard some decent things about them.

Construction lines are fairly important and quite useful; if you find yourself having trouble keeping them light, try something like drawing them with a mechanical pencil, which will force you to keep things lighter less you snap the lead, or even look for non-photo blue pencils which are specifically made to not show up when photographed or scanned.

About 5: Slight difference between still life and life drawing, but your best bet for either would be seeing if you can find a local art school or college that offers life drawing classes.

Aye, I understand that. And again, I'll probably be doing more with those using Proko as reference (because really, I don't want to sit here and read through books upon books when I learn best by seeing things in motion. That was my problem with picking up Loomis in the first place). Although should I do a collage of what I generally do with my current ways of drawing? I've been thinking of doing that just to show people what I do and how I do it, despite it maybe not being the best way to handle things...

Mmm...referring to this video in particular:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EPNYWeEf1U

Which he has one for the frontal and side view (I am not ready to do side views at all...ugh). The frontal view I think I'm already doing the way that it normally would be, but maybe I should give his video another look-see. Hmm....

Mm...then what's the difference? I figured they were the same thing for the most part o.o;;

Unfortunately, even if there were any art classes around my area (which there aren't in my immediate area. More like an hour away if that), I wouldn't have the money to go to them sadly. ;__;

Oh me oh my~ *Dusts off topic* Been half a year? A bit long eh? Well, I've only recently started picking up spriting yet again (nothing on art since last time, since well....no motivation to do that still). Why now? Because I'm doing a little request for someone at the current time, in exchange for something, on DA.

It's just a head for now, and uses Mei-Fang (if you can't tell) as the base for that. Mei-Fang actually is a good reference for this character's height (only 1 inch shorter than this character), though having a bit of issues sorting out how the shoulders/arm should go. Once I get past that, the rest should be fairly simple to do, as the character's design is pretty basic. Pretty Ada Wong-ish actually.

The requester's character in question:

So yeah! Just throwing this out there, since it's SOMETHING I suppose. *shrugs*

Still a rough draft. I've always had issues with legs and arms, so the arms being off is no surprise. Not sure how to handle the back nor butt, since I'm also not used to skin-tight anything (nor did I ever really dabble with the torso much in any of my art-related things). Once I get the rough draft of the arms/hands/legs done, I should be able to tidy up the rest of this. I think...just trying to get this done as quickly and efficiently as possible without making it look too bad for the person it's being made for. Who knows? Maybe after I finish Lynn here, I'll go back and actually finish that Lenna I was working on last year. ^^;;

Update to the first version. I think the back turned out nicely, and the breasts are finally situated (I think), both thanks to using Jam as a reference. But help! How to do arms and hands!? Even with using Jam for the left arm (Lynn's right arm), I don't think it turned out the way it's supposed to be. And I don't know if the butt is right too...may have to use Mei-Fang more for that...but that arm/hand! It's terrible looking right now! >_<

Taking some time to study some real-life arms, and then finding Lilica and using her as reference, I attempted to correct the left arm (character's right arm). Also attempted fixing up the hand...:

Near Max/Max Zoom:

Default zoom (so normal zoom):

Better or worse? I'm not sure since again, arms and hands are my bane. The other arm I will probably work on soon (and probably use Lilica again as a reference since she seems to be the better one for these arms). Will probably touch up on the torso later. Though now that I look at it, I'm not sure if the torso is properly placed or if where her chest is is too low on her body...hmm...

Oh, and the reference image I was using for my real-life image:

Aye, I know. It was the best one I could get for that angle though, so I went with that (and tried to adjust it from that). It didn't pan so well for the sprite, as you may have noticed in the previous version, where it still looks super noodly anyways. Again, probably due to my failure of being able to translate RL images into pixels. Also doesn't help that literally no images that I was looking for had the hand the way I wanted it to be either....

unless you specifically want to learn how to make sprites from pictures, I think it's better if you learn to make sprites based on other sprites. that way you can learn the stlye better, once you got the style down you can try tracing from porn pictures. just a tip.

Yeah, only reason I was using the RL image was someone suggested looking them up and seeing how they look from there, then trying to do the arms based on that. Otherwise, I would've just stuck with using other sprites like I have been. The patterns used on arms don't seem too terribly bad though, not for the upper arms anyways (in terms of where the pixels go). I can't speak on the lower arm though since I haven't found a good enough sprite to check that out without SOMETHING being in the way and obstructing the arm's view.

Heads seem to be a bit troublesome for me even though I should already know how to deal with them, so I just reuse another sprite's head and go from there. ^^;;

I generally stick with Guilty Gear-esque sprites for whenever I do sprites. Why that style, I don't know, but I find it easier to work with than say...SNK or Capcom style. Can't really explain it...kinda like how Arcana Heart-styled sprites don't seem that bad to me right now. Probably why I did Maria in that style over any other style, and was doing Lenna in that style (though fudge trying to get hair looking right, my lord lol...). But animations? Out of the question. I've tried in the past, but I just can never do it, ugh...

Overall, it doesn't look TOO bad right now (outside of the torso probably being off and the right arm (her left arm) being a noodle for the time being, right? o.o;

So, since the Naruto site I was watching the episodes from is having issues for whatever reasons (140 episodes I watched in a row, my lord...), I decided to work on this a bit more, doing the legs this time (and fixing up the butt/back a bit more to be a bit more...in-line I suppose?). I think I have to readjust the bottom of the dress now since well...I THINK this is the right length for her legs, since she's supposed to be very close in terms of height to Mei-Fang there. Though not sure if the legs are right or if the body is right or what now. @_@;

Oh, and Lilica was used as reference for the legs, not Mei-Fang. I feel like Mei-Fang's legs are too thick for this character personally, and while Lilica is a scrawny little thing, I adjusted the width and whatnot accordingly to work with an adult and not a 14 year old, to the best of my abilities...

The hand is the main focus right now (I also rounded out the hip a bit more. Dunno if it's too much or not...), the rest of the body will wait until later. I'm still having issues getting the hand right, as right now it looks far too fat and now the arm looks too short...just what am I doing wrong here? T-T

This is being used as a reference on fixing things up before I do anything else, thanks to HCF for giving me some tips on this.

Just did some shading to make it at least more bearable. Also fixed up her right shoulder and hip (the character's left shoulder/hip) so that the shoulder/arm doesn't seem too close to the body, and that the hip is a bit rounder. Also expanded the area around her crotch a bit more so it doesn't look so tight, but I don't know how to properly deal with that. Still lots of things to fix, need to make her assets bigger as per the image I have, need to figure out how to shade the dress, and still need to add the jewelry, but it's getting somewhere? ^^;;

Coloring/shading is NOT something I've ever been good at at all, even worse than doing art/sprites, so if something seems off, do let me know. Still looking for more feedback on this so I can finish this off and send it to the requestee! ^^;

New update to Lynn. Not much really as there's still things I haven't touched but...I DID attempt to fix up several places. Most notably, the left leg (around the calf), the right leg (alongside the outside of the shin), the left shoulder, the left hand (removed several pixels), the left armpit, the neck, and the right arm. Hopefully this looks much better and I can finally move on? ^^;

And yes, I'm aware that the shading isn't 100% exact. I am terrible at shading/colors so...if anyone can help with that? ^^;

Some update I suppose? ^^;

Added in the jewelry and trimmed down some lines (not sure if the jewelry looks right or not though...). Also tried to adjust the crotch and breasts, though the crotch may look better, the breasts do not...once again, if I haven't shown it at all, this is what's being used as the reference for the image:

Any help would be greatly appreciated! No, I haven't fixed the shading yet, main priority is just finishing the damned thing lol. All that's really left is that hand now I do believe, and then fixing up shading and whatnot, and that's it for this sprite! Want to get this done soooo badly ha...

Hyalp, how to do hand holding gun and a gun? I'm using Petra as a reference, but don't think it's helping too much. I am not sure if this will work or not (I know the pinky is missing, but not sure how to handle it). She's supposed to be holding a pistol in that hand (which I don't know who uses a pistol. Maybe I'll have to use Jill Valentine as a reference...). But yeah! @_@; Also, still need to fix the breasts (I tried to fix up the shading there too...)

Trying to finish this off now, since I'm converting videos for my Smashfest series and thus am limited on what I can do on the computer. ^^;

Man, I know it's been a while since I last done anything on this, but I didn't think it's been 5 weeks. Oi vey. x_x;;

In any case, while internet was out, decided to touch up on this hand (no gun yet). Left is new, right is old. Think it looks better now?

If it looks better, then MAYBE I can start with the pistol. Still need to touch up on breasts too, and then I'll be done finally >_>;

Yeah, that part of the leg does need fixed up too. I haven't figured out how to make it smooth yet, like a lot of things on her. x_x;
