Are you going to animate the northern lights(?), trees, wolf,and grass?More layers?Is it possible to make the tombstones destructible?Is it possible to make the stage darken when a cloud covers the moon?
While it's true that the stage is static on several parts and would benefit greatly in getting some layering done, I think the most problematic thing is that the players are really too low on the screen, because thre isn't much floor in the image. In fact, adding some ground isn't hard at all, since adding black at the bottom would do the trick IMO.
I'll probably do what cybaster said and add more black to the bottom. I might also double the size of the graves.

Actually it is possible. You would have to move those sprites into everyone of you character remove from the stage and code it in each one of your characters.
