this was my first jab at stage making so it's nothing really special

That looks more like either the Super Mario All*Stars or Super Mario Advance version of Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario USA.  Why not make it 8-bit instead of 16-bit or 32-bit. Also, why not add some Doki Doki Panic-exclusive characters moving across the stage?
My Mugen Wish List would include protagonists, mascots and other iconic characters with everything they have brought straight from their source with little or no editing.

I had a bit of difficulty getting that to work right

Your best bet would be to extend the lightest green area of the ground so the characters have something more realistic to stand on.

The current look looks like they're about to slide off the floor into oblivion below.
