I've mentioned in my project topic that I'd be very interested in doing Raiden (Fatal Fury). With KOF XII coming out soon, the itch to do him is getting greater. Obviously there's no KOF sprites kicking around. Probably the easiest way of getting some would be to convert the CVS sprites. That said, I don't have the spriter skills needed for the conversion. I'd love to do the coding though.Since this type of thing would require a lot of time, I'm thinking the spriter would actually have to be interested in making a KOF Raiden and just needs a little push, so I'm just seeing if anyone's been thinking about it, is interested, or knows someone who would be interested in taking on this task. Not all CVS sprites need to be ported. If you've known me for the past year and kept up with my project (KOFE), you know that I won't quit halfway through. I'm posting here because I'd love to make a Raiden and I'm serious about bringing him to the KOF arena, not because it's a passing interest. My project will be going for at least another year, so I'm not expecting for something tomorrow. If it takes months, even a year and a bit, no worries. Some info:(KOF basics Already in CVS)2 Intros 3 Victory posesmost basicscommand attack (stepping headbutt)special 1 (leaping release powerbomb)special 2 (flying clothesline)special 3 (mist)special 4 (charging shoulder)DM 1 (Fire Breath)(Missing)Face down ground hit animations (4 frames)special 5 standing uppercut swing (can be modified from existing CVS frames)DM 2 leaping exploding powerbomb (3 frames)DM 3 Wild Ambition ground pound (6 - 8 frames)
I'm hoping the person that would help in this case would convert the CVS Capcom style of coloring to SNK's style (and maybe remove that damned beard of his). Hugo from SF3 to SVC is a good example. If you put FFSP Terry and CVS Terry beside KOF Terry, which one would look like it'd match more before palette correction? I also suggested CVS since all the animations are there. FFSP is choppy by comparison and would need sprites created to fill the gaps.
I think it's a good step in the right direction for 10 minutes of work. Terry rescaled Raiden and added a couple of shades. I think his legs and shoes could use a bit more shading. I tried to fool around a bit myself although I suck and it took me 40 mins just to modify what Terry did. Might not even be better. I did notice though that Raiden has too many blues. Most SNK characters stick with about 5 shades for their costume, so I tried to implement that with Raiden. I also changed a few color separations including the shoes. Here:A comparison of what SNK does with Ryu and what Terry did with RaidenHere's what I tried to do by modifying it and switching skin color:Here's the mod with Terry's skin coloring:Terry, can you tell me what scale you used? It's a good start I think. I'm tempted to start programing KOF Raiden using the CVS sprites now just to show how he would play while I wait for a spriter to convert him. He wouldn't have all his moves, but it's just an idea.
Wild Tengu said, April 12, 2009, 10:52:37 pmHow about using Big Bear's sprites from FFSP? +1SNKP generally adapted old sprites to KOF using (like Duck King or Garou chars). And he would look different to CVS incarnation, different about every adaptation CVS->KOF I see, it's like playing CVS in Neo-Geo or something like that
I agree to an extent. Although if you look at Duck King FFS and compare to Duck King RB (which was used for his KOF), they really don't look that similar at all. If SNK had done a Raiden for KOF prior to the XII style, I think it'd be safe to say it would've been a complete re-draw like Duck King FFS -> RB was. I think they'd just use the original to figure out the animations. But then again Capcom did this as well for Raiden, so it's not too far off. I personally think Raiden didn't make it in to KOF 2003 because of the amount of sprite work it would've taken, instead of just modifying Tizoc like they did.The styles are different, no doubt, but asking someone to draw Raiden from scratch is too much I think. Using CVS is just finding the right color scheme and modifying the face and muscles a bit. Maybe I should've compared Raiden with SVC Earthquake, since they're both fat...
I compromise to make you 1 standing sprite and show you the steps, so you can have it as reference/model/guide . . . nothing more 'cos i'm bussy with other stuff.
I think the best base to use is FFSP sprites, not CVS ones. But FFSP sprites are not a little bit limited in their number... Good luck.
Here's why I think CVS may be better in this case:Look at Duck King from RBS and Terry from CVS. The style isn't exactly the same, but I think both are closer to their KOF counterpart than FFS. Even if you fix FFS coloring, it's a lot more off proportionally than the others. Add in the extra frames need to fix the choppy animation and you have far more work ahead of you using FFS than CVS.
What about his Fatal Fury Special self? Looks closer to the size XII is using, and anims can be more or less easily be improved with existing resources. Also, 7 normal throws. Will check for existing sprite sheets and give it a shot, might inspire someone.
Spoiler: Process (click to see content)I made a half assed job because (i hope i understood well) you wanted a way to convert the sprites quickly . . . as you can see, i first made this:655321 said, April 13, 2009, 06:08:59 pmheight: 97%width: 95%And then partially fixed the shading. If you have questions, just ask.Notes: I left the head/mask almost untouched. Skin colors are from Griffon. Don't mess with the shading in the belly or you'll have nightmares (also snk shaded in a similar fashion Earthquake's belly).
Minor twitches to Cooper's sprite. Most of it on the arms. The extended arm is suposed to be a bright area, so i removed that line and add some light to it.Light up a bit the hand, and shade the other one.
