Because I like the series and its fantastic atmosphere an art direction, lets have a fucking Silent Hill discussion.

Favorite by far was 2, but despite the changes made to it in Homecoming I probably put that as my second. Been leaning on picking up the Wiimake of 1, but due to its playstyle have been hesitant, for those that have picked it up would it be a good play for a longtime fan of the series?

Silent hill 2 is still up there as one of my favorite horror games of all time.

k I'mma tell you bout the Wiimake of 1....donot I say doNOT get it...you can't beat the crap outta the monsters...they're afraid of flares...you can only run from them so most of the time you don't even see them besides in cut scenes...the game was horrible cuz it totally contradicts the events of the 3rd game...Origins was PSP's version of 2 pretty much and it held up to par with every Silent Hill out there...but as far as the Wii remake of the 1st game it's a waste of money...the only monsters you do see at all are called Rawshocks, which the name is based on the Rorschach test in psychology....they appear a lil different depending on how you play the game...at most Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a rentworthy title...but way far from a must own. it's not even scary like all the other games...most of the time you solve these puzzles in the normal world and in this "normal world" you are completely safe so there's no feeling of ok when's the next armless man gonna come outta nowhere and spit acid at me.

if ya must play it I suggest renting it cuz you'll be able to beat it in about 6 hours

usually in the horror genre I never expect to "beat up" the monsters, but the rest of what you said about the game does irk me. Going to look into the stuff that caused contradictions with the past canon for sure.

I suppose though when more info turns up about the newest Silent Hill I'll use this topic for it too.

well according to the canon Harry actually dies in the 1st game so it means the 3rd game never happened and it all was just made up in Cheryl/Heather's brain to somehow keep Harry alive so to speak...which would mean the games 2, 3, 4, Homecoming and Origin's never happened.as we all know Origins is prequel to the 1st game so it does contradict itself to a degree. I've played them all sept the new one coming out without Akira Yamaoka at the music helm

WAT >:(

Also, Shattered Memories isn't crap, but it ain't a SH either. Same with Homecoming, if only they dropped the "Silent Hill" prefix they would've been above-average horror games. Oh, and Silent Hill: Downpour (the one in the trailer) seems to be total crap, if you want a good horror game Google AMY: Zombie Reflection.

Anyway, the thing about SM is that it isn't your everyday action-survival game, it's more like a psychological thriller, without guns. More scary than Homecoming, not worth a buy, but a rent.

The new story they gave for SH:SM was pretty awesome. It makes up for the lack of combat. Specially the multiple scenarios (sort of) and endings. But yeah, it isn't really SH. It's like a new game.

I would like to see a sequel to 2nd game. But the canon ending is probably the one where James dies so, I'm SOL.

NEVER, I SAY NEVER! DON'T YOU DARE RUIN THE ~BEST~ SILENT HILL, EVER, OR I'LL FIND YOU, SKIN YOU, RAPE YOUR MUSCLES AND THEN PISS ON YOUR CAT >:(

Really, Konami would probably just hire an indie developer and make James a superhero getting into gunfights with Pyramid Heads, WITH KATANAS.

Canonically it all depends on James, do you really think he has the balls to commit suicide or let Maria go? He's a selfish coward. I think the only possible sequel would be James trying to execute the ritual to revive Mary.

@DMK

If you liked SH2 for it's story, mood and general mind fuck, go with Doomgay's comments; even if SH:SM is a revision of the first SH, it's really good as a "what-if" game in the saga. (just do not spoil yourself watching videos/reading FAQs online; the game is really more enjoyable that way)

And here's something for anyone who loved SH2's story as much as me; someone called Ducky is translating the official SH2 japanese novel to english:

LINK.

Absolutely worth reading.

From the Silent Hill games that I've played, here's what I have to say about them:

Best Story: Silent Hill 2
Scariest: Silent Hill 3
Favorite: Silent Hill 4(for it's overall setting, story, and gameplay)
Best gameplay: Silent Hill: Homecoming

About Shattered Memories; yes it's contradictory from the other games but that's because it's a seperate continuity. No need to worry about that. :P

Literally the first game and its remake are related due to the fact the true ending sees Harry's death...so in turn Harry is dead which sort of nullifies at least SH3 from the timeline but since Silent Hill is a manifestation of a singular persons mind depending on who the person is and their past....I guess you cant nullify origins, SH2 and 4 and homecoming...it could be possible all the characters who were ever in Silent Hill were all somewhat manifestations of Cheryls mind...I believe so cuz Silent Hill is all about the psychology.also I think Silent Hill serves redemption by having those who had dark pasts to face what they did wrong and finally move on from their guilt

WRONG. Silent Hill is canon only from SH to SH:TR, the rest is just a big sack filled with shit, Origins is so-so, but Homecoming and Shattered Memories are UNACCEPTABLE. SH's canon ending is the one in which Harry flees the town with the newborn and kills Cybil in the amusement park.

What part of "separate continuity" do you not understand? They take place in different universes. One universe has the old Silent Hill storyline, the other has the Shattered Memories storyline.

NO. STOP IT, NOW >:(

I'm sorry, it's just that, I'm a SH-whore. SH's canon ending is the one in which Harry kills Cybil in the amusement park and leaves the city with the newborn, this can easily be explained by the fact that he gave the small container of Aglaophotis he managed to recover in SH to the newborn he's received from his "old" daughter (Cheryl Manson), Heather Manson, in SH3, this wouldn't be possible if he used that container to save Cybil. Besides, why in the name of God he'd throw some red liquid at a possessed woman?

There's an official guide that says the "good" ending from SH1 is the official ending for that game.

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Also, the "In the water" ending is probably how 2 ended, but ya every game except 1 can have any pretty much any ending.

Gentlemen, Silent Hill is alive again...

I would liked to make a new thread instead to revive this 11yo one, but since this is the only thread dedicated to SH in general, I prefered to take it out of the grave, just like Konami did this October 19th with their SH live. Here's the complete transmission, but for those who doesn't see it, here's what was revealed:
-Silent Hill 2 Remake, a PlayStation 5 exclusive game
-New games, most of them probably would be spin-offs but there're no more info than the teasers: SH Townfall and SH f
-Return to Silent Hill, a new SH movie with the same producer and director of the first one that will be a SH2 adaptation
-An interactive trasmission: SH Ascension
-New merchandise, mostly detaild figures from SH2 and others, but also some more stuff, all purchasable in the same Konami store
