The new battle system is done.  A release will come soon, though I can't make any promises as to when.

Game info - 28 March 2010


Yoko will implement the stance-shifting system similar to Taeko.  He will be bit slower, but will have higher damage output and average defense.

This looks interesting. I am curious to know how you are drawing the character.
i think we should call it an "engine" so we don't look like total idiots because otherwise we'd be arguing about a "game" and that would be somehow "dumber" than arguing about an "engine" on the "internet" for countless hours

Are these characters going to be released for normal mugen as well?

I will definitely release them as normal characters soon.  Honestly, as they are, they are pretty close to being normal MUGEN characters.  A few new features I've added such as just frames and guard breaking might be removed for more balanced play though.

Hey thanks a lot!.  Funny thing is I actually just took Nrvnqsr's sounds and modded the hell out of them to get them to sound less-stolen.

I started working on a new character yesterday.  It's Shounen Batto from Paranoia Agent.  It's not my own character, but it is my take on it.  I recently saw the anime and thought he'd be a good character in a fighting game.

I did finish Charlotte, but I've yet to record a video of her in action; I'll get one up soon.

Maybe not, but it's a character I really want to do.  I likely wont even include him in the full pack of characters when it comes time to release the game.

In terms of XNA-Mugen, I don't know too much about the project, but as far as I could tell ( from when I last checked ) XNA Mugen wasn't working to the extent that I wanted it to.  If/when it becomes as fully capable as Win Mugen is, I'll look into it, but I would love to put this on Xbox Live.  Now to get a hold of a 360...

I love it... plain and simple.

Unique Idea from the base (except melty bllod stuff), original characters and stages, all made by you, and fluid animation and gameplay. I kinda don't like how some of the combos you pulled off looks bland, but thats not really an issue at all. :sugoi:

Are you going to include a soryfor each character?

Oh wow thanks!  I've drawn a lot of my influence from the fluidity of the Melty Blood characters.  The artists that work on those games are just amazing animators.

This looks like so much fun. I can't wait for you to start releasing things, especially the actual Full-Game. The animations are some of the nicest I've ever seen, great work.

I will definitely be releasing stuff soon.  I'm trying to wait until I finish my tenth character.  I'm currently on the eighth; though really I might just release them right after the next.

Could you specify special?
like anything that you will have ingame that wont be usable out of game, like, tekken style grab escapes, or grab counters for one, or specific interactive stage stuff

Oh I get it.  I do have the shielding thing for now as well as the guard breaking in terms of game mechanics.  I've also added a "feature?" where as soon as you land on the ground from a jump or an aerial move and press forward, you'll instantly go into the running/dash state.  This allows follow up combos to be performed, but it requires exact timing. 

What I would really love to do is implement a few different game modes such as an adventure-platform game similar to Ragnarok Offline with a leveling system and everything.  I also want to make an RPG-style mode; hard to explain, but my friends and I occasionally play this mode on different fighting games, though we have to regulate the rules and conditions on our own.  I also want a tag team mode with the ability to pick four characters per team. 

I'm not sure the separate game modes are possible in Mugen though right now I'm not really researching it.  These features are more reserved for when/if I get good enough at coding to build my own engine.

He most definitely will.  In fact, all characters will have original voice overs (hopefully) when I release them.  If I don't have them, however, it wont hold it back.

Been a while since I updated anything, but here goes.  This here is Natalia's companion "Ivan".  Basically you can summon him once per match and once the power meter reaches zero, he will disappear.  He attacks and moves in tandem and allows for follow up moves to certain attacks.

First of all thanks for the compliment!  I've put a lot of work into all of this!  How long?  Well usually I can do one frame (completely inked, colored and shaded) in 5 to 10 minutes; so it does take quite a bit of time.  How do I do it?  It's all hand drawn and hand animated in flash using a Wacom tablet.  There are a few characters that I've done (Charlotte, Nadia, Lil Slugger) that I made by drawing out a sprite sheet and cutting and rotating parts to animate.  However I found that particular technique to be more time consuming than hand drawing everything for me; plus hand drawn frame-by-frame just looks better to me anyhow.

It looks like his normal attacks won't have any range at all, maybe you should make him hop during them or something.

It looks like his normal attacks won't have any range at all, maybe you should make him hop during them or something.

They are very short range, but there is a good reason for that.  Basically when you play as this character you're also going to be controlling a second player; or rather this is the second player.  You're going to have two players on screen at the same time which you also have to control at the same time.  The dog, Ivan, is meant to be able to add extra damage to combos and make it easier to keep the opponent at bay.  At one point all of his attacks actually did hop or slide in a bit but with testing it was found that it was extremely unbalanced; especially considering how much faster he is than most characters.  If this character was a stand-alone one, I would most definitely do that, but in the interest of maintaining a balanced game, it's probably going to remain this way.

Heh in terms of the time though, I can understand what you mean.  I'm looking at a year (maybe even more) to reach my goal amount of characters.  Of course I want them all to be great, but I want at least 30 done.  I'm sure I'll release a demo well before that though.  Anyways, the amount of time this is going to take is somewhat overwhelming, but I'm just hoping I can finish.

[Quick news update]

For right now, I'm holding off on doing a new character until I fix a few(hundred) things.  For one I need to return to every single character and update their sprites to hi-res ones.  I wish I had done my research before I started, but oh well.  I also need to adjust and redo a lot of the character's combo systems as some feel a little repetitive and too basic.  Some characters need more moves added and some need some tweaked so I'll be taking care of all of this in the coming week(s).  I want to be able to release a demo with the first 8 characters soon; hopefully before the end of August, but I'll of course keep you all posted.  

Before I continue, though, I want to give special thanks to Byakko and Cyanide for helping me with my many issues with the latest character and to Kohaku for giving me permission to use and modify his Actress Again screen pack and of course to all of you for being so supportive!

Ok so I may seem like I quit this project, but I assure you I have not.  I have a very big update coming soon.  Basically I've been working on a whole new battle system that I didn't want to say anything about until I was 100% sure it could all be done, but now that It's fully working with no issues, I'll be ready to show it off in the next day or so.

Yeah it's a bit of extra work, but totally worth it when it comes down to game play.  I'm hoping to make it so people will be more encouraged to try more characters out rather than stick with just 1 or 2.

Almost.  It's more like one's got high attack and low speed, one's got high defense and mid speed, and the other has mid attack and defense and high speed.  Each has its own upside to normal attacking.  All attributes however are relative to the character.  For instance a stronger character in defense mode is still going to have higher attack than a weak character in attack. 

It should also be noted that the attack and defense styles don't exactly have higher attack and defense, but they simply have ways to raise both where the neutral style does not.

I'm really digging the 3 styles idea. Whoops the CVS's groove idea in the ass for sure.
It's something that makes the game 1 of a kind which is awesome  :sugoi:

And I'm starting to love the chicken with swords; it's just crazy in a good way.
I think the face expressions are a nice touch. Really gives him attitude!

To answer your questions yes!  At some point, I will make lifebars, but it's not high on my priority list right now.  In terms of voices though, I've got some people lined up and I'll have everybody fully voiced by the time the demo is ready.

By narrative, do you mean story?

If so, there isn't one at the moment.  That's one of those elements that I was going to ignore until a later date.  In terms of the story supporting the different fighting styles, I hadn't really considered that.  Honestly I don't even know how to explain that and I'm not so sure its necessary.

All the sprites, backgrounds, effects, and future lifebars are and will be done in Flash CS3.  There are a few hyper moves ( like Sofie's laser ) that were quickly modeled out in Cinema 4D, but aside from that, it's been Flash all the way.

Yeah I had meant to release at least two back in October, but all this new stuff that I want to do is delaying the process.  At this point, I can't say exactly when and I shouldn't promise a date, but I'm hoping I can work out all the issues soon.  Only problem is that none of these will likely work with other mugen characters that dont have the custom commands that are required, but I may make some work-around for that if I can figure out how to do it.

I actually haven't played this game, though I have heard of it and seen videos and such.  I have not, however, seen Senna from that game, but I can definitely see some similarities in the fighting style.  Interesting that you would see that without actually seeing her play!  I guess I'm doing my job in that case.

Yeah I was aware that some people wouldn't quite like the masked texture technique, but you're right, it is a style thing.  It's something I've always kinda liked if done in a subtle way and it helps to set my characters apart from others as noone else is doing it ( I think ); or at least in a fighting game anyhow.

Thanks for your support though!  If I have time, I'll record a quick demo video of her so far either tonight or tomorrow.  It's a bit tough for me to explain how she plays without some sort of visual aid, so I'll need to do that sort of soon.

Apologies for the delay, but as promised, here's an early demo of my newest character Taeko.  The video shows the stance-shifting abilities unique to her.  Taeko can enter any of three stances by holding and releasing the A, B, or C button at the end of most attacks.  She can enter stances quickly by releasing the button at the right time, or simply continue to hold the button and the stance will eventually change, however, most stance-shifted attacks will not actually chain together unless the shift was timed correctly.  Overall she does not do very much damaage and has fairly low defense, but she is one of the fastest characters so far and has the ability to string together insanely large combos.

Each stance has its own advantages and disadvantages. 

The "Brace Stance (A release)" has the strongest and longest range attacks and is the easiest to enter, but it lacks moves quick enough to create large combos.  Brace Stance also has the ability to advance towards the opponent by entering the quarter circle motion which also allows Taeko to dodge projectiles, but she remains unable to back step. 

The "Serpent Hub Stance (B release)" is her most important stance in terms of combos.  It has a two quick strike moves, both of which can pick the opponent up off the ground and an excellent over-head combo finishing move.  Taeko is able to quickly step forward and back as well as perform a dodge by pressing down.  The downside to this stance is that it doesn't output very much damage.  Despite the lack of damage, it is important to use other stance moves as starters and knock-downs and return to this stance to finish or continue combos.

The "Crane Stance (C Release)" is a very risky stance to use.  Taeko cannot move in any direction while in this stance and thus remains wide open to projectile use, but each of the three attacks available are much quicker than any other stance move and they each advance her forward to some degree.  This stance is best used when at close range and it serves as a very good way to enter Serpent Hub Stance, especially after the flying kick technique.

At her final build, she will stand as a very difficult character to use that will require the stance-shifting technique, but if used correctly, she has the potential to be an excellent selection.

I'm hoping people wont feel as though she's too out of place.  She does have some techniques that no one else will, but she still feels ( to me ) like she belongs.  I do agree though; I want to have characters that feel a bit different than everyone else. 

Heh yeah the Rooster dude's name is MC Supercut.  Among the people that I have beta testing, he remains to be the favorite.  He has the tools to put intense pressure on his opponents.

Haha yeah I try to add  personality to ever character if I can.  Some are less pronounced than Supercut is.  Charlotte, for instance, looks like a normal person, but as soon as she starts attacking her facial expressions change to sinister and evil moods.

Here's me officially asking then.  I do have a lot more that can be shown as well and I'd easily be able to have more than enough data for each character to have its own topic as well.  Most of the characters I've done haven't shown anything in-depth quite yet, so that would be cool to do.

I suggest making sticky only the essential ones, like game info, gameplay, story. otherwise it looks umbalanced to have them all stickied.

I will be updating all these boards soon, including Shounen Batto.  I've been taking a break from this for the past week and I'll be picking it all back up likely tomorrow.

hii preaty good job, but its really a walk foward scle ?  i mean looks like he have a backward angle.. in walk foward you push your body to front..
it still preaty good i just fill strange seeing that angle..

The project isn't dead at all.  I've been on vacation for the past few months and I needed a break from the game but I'll be getting back into it very soon.

how is it going liero? i am dying to see more updates

More updates are coming soon.  I've had the game on closed beta for the past few months and I have a lot of changes to implement as well as some new characters and fighting styles.
