I'm finally putting in work to develop an original Mugen fullgame I've had in my head for the longest time. You can see the current progress in the video above.

Battle Craze is my tribute to the fighting game genre, in a world much like ours. The Battle Craze Tournament Series, one of the most prolific martial arts tournaments in the world, starts yet again, and one man, Ajit Sinha, is destined to win it all, not for the fame, but from his prediction that the world will enter an era of bloodshed then and there. Not only this, but the competition is fierce, with everyone holding onto their dreams dearly, or simply there to ruin the fun. Whatever the case, no one will back down, with their only option to duke it out.

Awesome you got around to posting about it here :)

Having seen you work on this for a long time it's cool that awareness is getting around.  It's getting pretty great and the final result is going to be one to watch out for.

All of Tsugumi's crouching normals are sprited.


In terms of other developments in the project, I've just about completed an entire list of voice lines for the cast planned. The only thing its missing is special interactions, but I was thinking those could be sprited, coded and voiced once we get everyone complete.

Edit: First post updated with short hand introductions to the cast.

OH! It's good that you brought that up since I don't remember if I specified it in the VOD or not, but I plan to have a public beta posted once the first 6 characters are complete (Ajit, Tsugumi, Sherm, Wallace, Reaper, la justicia)

Currently I'd consider this an alpha, so for now, testing is behind closed doors to me and the rest of the team.

I'm curious to know if you use references to "trace over" for the moves or do it from scratch.

Some things I did draw over and use reference, those being Ajit's walking, running and directional jumps, and for Tsugumi, her idle and walking animations. The rest is from scratch.

I don't use Photoshop to do this. I use a program called Aseprite, which has very good features for spriting and animating. It's also like, 15 USD.

Can these use standalone/collection?
How many is your own?

Due to the way we coded the lifebars and other things in common1, I don't think these characters will be available for individual release. Also their scale is kinda shorter than the standard, which is kinda iffy.

For the second point, if you are talking about the sprites done, I've done all the character sprites up to this point.

Yeah, everything started off of KFM, given the leftover audio that's gonna get replaced at some point. For the upcoming characters, we'll build off of Ajit and so on and so forth. KFM, while being an invaluable base for starting off Mugen code, he himself is pretty dated in terms of code and frame data.

Current progress vid courtesy of DrKelexo. AI and announcer implementation are the main updates here.

Ajit is essentially done at this point, outside of voicework and general sounds. Gonna continue crackin' on Tsugumi's sprites.

Along with some other new animations for today, I'd also like to show off what we're doing in terms of palettes. This was an idea by Kelexo, and I liked it enough to give the okay for.


Each button for every character is a color shared among the cast. The guide is as follows:

X - Default
Y - Red
Z - Blue
A - Green
B - Yellow
C - Purple
Start+X - White
Start+Y - Black
Start+Z - Pink
Start+A - Turqoise
Start+B - Orange
Start+C - Battle Craze Reference. Each of these palettes references another existing character in the cast.

We probably are gonna have extra palettes, but people are going to have to add them to the .def on their own.

Interesting idea, I like how each palette uses different shades of their respective colour while staying true to the colour theme of each button.

Funnily enough, I was planning to ask about how palettes were going to be handled later on seeing that there was colour separation in the sprites but held off on it because I thought it would be too early to ask.

While my questions have been answered from your post, I wonder if there will be an opportunity later on for other users to submit palettes of their own? If not that's alright.

Color seperation used to be added by Kelexo in post, but he suggested I make the sprites starting off with them. Because of this, Tsugumi's development has gone quicker than Ajit's in terms of implementing the sprites and the code.

For user submitted palettes, I'll wait until we have more of the cast in progress before posting those. My only big rule for palettes is to NOT touch the skin tones of characters, even for reference palettes, so keep this in mind.

While I couldn't watch the stream on time due to time-zone differences, I watched the VOD that was saved on Twitch. Thank you for the stream!

It was insightful to see how Tsugumi's moves work in-game as well as how the development process of the game is coming along.  :)

Updated the first post with the VOD. Planning to update it with the color separation images for the first six for user submitted palettes.


And everyone's current set of default colors.

Other than finishing Tsugumi, the only other major thing to work on is the wiki. Last night I checked and for some reason, everything is gone? The movelists for everyone is still fine, that's saved in a Google Doc, but all the lore is now lost to the public. I'm going to wait to see if by some miracle it all comes back so I can save it somewhere in a text document. If not, I'm going to rewrite everything from memory.

Long time no update. Hope everyone's doing well in these times.



Currently, everyone has a base sprite, and Kelexo is cracking on everyone's set of default palettes. I'll update the first post to include their color separation, but I will note that things will update as FX and props are currently not sprited.

The wiki is also back online. The host was doing some maintenance and I missed the memo. In case this happens again for the long term, I made sure to save the lore to a word document.

The last major update is Tsugumi. We're currently spriting her gethits and I'm expecting her sprites to be completed before the month ends. Current progress below.

The base sprites for the cast are looking really nice, leaves me looking forward to seeing everyone in motion when that time comes. :)

The palettes for the first six characters are also looking great and the animations are coming along nicely as always.

I am not sure why (although it's not much of an issue) but I wasn't able to see the base sprites of the cast, the palettes and the recent blocking/gethit animations for Tsugumi on Firefox so I used another browser to see them instead.

That sounds like a good idea, I don't have any problems with Imgur uploads on Firefox.

Aside from that, I made three palettes for Ajit. Hopefully these are alright. The Craze Technique UI took a while for me to figure out.

Here are more palettes for Ajit:

A custom palette, my bad attempt at referencing something relatively obscure (Some Examples) and Kamen Rider OOO (the idea came up by complete accident after thinking of a traffic light colour motif for Ajit's Craze Technique HUD).

Hopefully the inverted tiger in the second palette isn't terrible in motion.

As for the other characters I'll wait patiently for their palette templates to be finalised before getting started on them.

Tsugumi's stage looks really good, I like the details put into it! It's also nice to see her sprites completed as well. :)

I haven't prepared any palettes for Tsugumi yet but I will definitely get around making them as soon as I can.

Edit: Here are 5 palettes for Tsugumi using the template in the first post:


Except for the last one, all palettes are custom. I took the skin tone colour from the set of default palettes you have posted previously, hopefully it is the correct one for Tsugumi.

The bottom right colour on the palette template I am guessing is for the electrocution gethits I have filled it in yellow in the .act file but in the image it shares the same colours as the face. I will update all these palettes as soon as an updated template goes up.

Sorry for the late reply, but the bottom right one should have been a different color. I'll have to get back with Kelexo on that. Good stuff by the by.

So, since Kelexo has his hands tied with another project, which I'm not gonna disclose yet, I started on spriting Sherm. He's getting done pretty fast due to his unique style of being animated. The way he moves is referenced off of CPS1 animations, specifically, Ryu from Street Fighter II. Doing less sprites to match this style makes his progress a lot quicker than prior characters, and has given me some appreciation for that old school style.

Sherm's facial expressions are the icing on the cake, it adds to the humour of the lower frame count of his animations as well as his character. :)

I have made 5 more palettes for Tsugumi and updated my previous palettes to the new template in case you still need them.

All palettes are custom except for the last one (I took one of Akatsuki's Under Night sprites on Mizuumi Wiki and adapted the colours from there).

I can't thank you enough for your support through comments and palettes. It's good to know I have some eyes on this passion project.

Sherm's sprites are coming out like hotcakes. His code is going to catch up given some circumstances with Kelexo's computer setup.

His FX are rainbow colored, not like a gradient. These colors are going to be added to his palette template, and surprisingly, they don't clog up much. 21 colors for the energy and an extra 21 for the hand imprint.

No problem at all, thanks for the kind words! I am glad I am able to support this project. :)

I enjoyed making these palettes as the simplicity of the sprite style compliments well with the how the colour separation is arranged.

It's nice to see more of Sherm's sprites and animations as well, I especially like how fluid the last animation is as well as the serious expression he has in his leaping punches rather than the comical expressions seen in his other sprites/animations.

I also look forward to his completed palette template. I am not sure if I am able to think of something clever with the colour spectrum of his effects but hopefully I am able to come up with something. If not, I probably would leave it alone as it is as I think the default rainbow looks good enough.

You have my eyes, too. I LOVE how expressive, cartoony and fluid these animations are. They look like they were fun to draw, and that makes me smile. Keep at it! Lovin' everything so far.

Since you're going for a really simple sprite style as far as detailing goes, have you thought about using the black color more to imply depth? You could probably put it in key places like bends and creases in certain parts of an animation.

I had that idea bouncing in my head, but I only held back on it in case someone did want to step up to shade them. I wouldn't even want a super complex style of shading, just the one layer to reflect the kind I do for my own art.

The super edit you did is pretty sweet. The motion blur for the hands is a definite must!

The "Look over there!" animation is shaping up to be one of my favourite animations for Sherm so far, I can hear the stock cartoon tiptoe noises coming from it after he points. :)

As for ideas/suggestions for extra taunts for Sherm, here are some that I thought up of:
- Does a fake fireball, then wags his finger and shakes his head (or alternatively just the latter without the fake fireball)
- Tries to do a fireball but fails and suffers from an arm cramp instead
- Celebrates in victory doing one of Ryu's win poses, then reacts in shock to see that the fight is still going

Hopefully these ideas are alright. I wasn't sure if I was on the right track with them so I also look forward to what you and the team come up with for his taunts.

A few of your ideas were implemented, given some of them overlapped with ideas I already had in store.


We are nearing Sherm's completion, although I am gonna keep some other things secret about him for now. To help stave off the wait for the next Craze Cast, here's some dev screenshots, courtesy of DrKelexo.

Nice to see that our ideas overlapped with the third taunt, it looks good in motion! :)

It's also nice to see the rest of Sherm's taunts (which all suit him very well) and some screenshots of him in action.

Looking forward to watching the next stream/VOD!

Sherm is complete, except for one aspect. I found someone who can voice him, and I'm going to try and get his lines recorded and have Kelexo implement them before I do the next Battle Craze Cast (Which I promise is gonna come to us VERY soon).

His stage is also done. Here's a sneak peek.

That is nice to hear, I am looking forward to hearing Sherm's voice for the first time. :)

I also look forward to seeing the stage in full. It's nice to see the storyboard and outlining process in the sneak peek as well.
