Sup guys, this is a tryout that me and some others were discussing about. a mugen pack for beginners, with a roster based on variety and basic tools:

So it seems you found out about Mugen.

First off, you can get the latest version on www.elecbyte.com , the latest stable one is 1.0, which is the one this pack is aimed for.

This pack is a variety pack, designed to showcase examples of interesting creations in mugen to help you get a headstart as a new mugen user
and to provide you as well with tools that would allow you to change the characters around and to dabble in editing
them ( and later on creating your own if you find out a taste for it ) .

This pack was put together by some of us at Guild( www.mugenguild.com) , we talked it out with the creators we could, those we couldnt are credited for their work
.
Below you will find a list of all the characters avaliable here, and a link to the creator website when avaliable.
If any of these characters particularly interests you , you should check out its readmes and head on to the creator website to find more about his other works.

if this turns out to help someone then who knows, we might do more packs down the line.

Remember there are a lot more creators out there, this is a variety pack, it was put together through suggestions of several authors and their own self chosen works.
There are a lot more authors out there you can find some are better than those showcased here, some are worse, but they are all unique.Maybe one of them will become your favorite!

Hmm for a starter pack it's good; but I noticed the lack characters from games like Melty blood, Big bang beat and the like, also there is a digitized fighter but none from Mortal Kombat, and I don't think I saw a Marvel character in there either I think one source accurate mvc character and one custom one would work.

This pack is great!  The fighter factor included actually works like its supposed to on my pc,
my last fighter factory would tell me only 1 mugen can run at a time when ever i tried to test chars,
i dont know why because i never had mugen running.

also there is a digitized fighter but none from Mortal Kombat

that's cuz MK is severely lacking in quality in general in regards to mugen (not to stroke my own ego or anything. btw thanks for including me!)

Besides, the only digitized chars that are at least decent that I remember are the ones made by Mass.

Nice including both Yellow Devil and Famardy!

if this turns out to be a thing that helps some people out we might do a second pack, who knows what would end up on that one?

Old school pack
Annie May pack
(company name here) pack

Endless possibilities.

Though, I'm not sure if we really should promote being lazy but eh.

And I strongly disagree with JS's Homer in this. Also, he quit Mugen so he won't care anyway.

promote lazy?
Why? Because the chars are packed instead of in different places?  Im trying to teach some people to fish for stuff instead of just having to search everywhere for things. Think about it this way, if you come across mugen today and didnt know anything about it, would you be able to come across several of those?

this isn't one of those mugen compilations of 300+ characters everyone and their mom, dog & evil clone release everyday. it's something ment for normalfags people to get an easy introduction to the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the mugen community.

it has a small and varied roster not for the purpose of increasing one's mugen collection but to show what can be done with the engien from almost-perfect-conversions, coversions that play like the original but have something the original didn't had, it also shows that you can take material from other games and with a little imaginaiton and hard work can convert them into completely different content or make your sprites and either port characters from other games or franchises or even come up with your own original material (and even something that does not neccesarily has to play like a fighting game)

let's face it, most if not all people are first attracted to mugen not becasue they can create their own game but because it seems like an interesting "game" (same applies to me and most/all of you). then if they have the motivation can start creating their own content

tl;dr: it's a good idea to introduce newcomers to mugen with a small and varied roster showing what can be made with mugen (could use some omegapshyco though...)

My only complain about this is: why this thread isn't sticky since it's an important stuff for starters??

That's all, good idea indeed

exactly, this should be stickied in the introduction section

additionaly, since this guy was lookign for a starter pack but missed this thread on this very same section might want to change the topic title as well (like, guild starter pack or something)

I'm really liking where this is going. I wish I had all of this guidance when I first stepped foot into Mugen-Infantry 7 years ago. I think you should also make the database Nunor has been working on a little more well known: A lot of people, who initially post here, ask for where to start. Someone then points them to the Database and their minds are blown.

Perhaps a list of what character is the best variant based on accuracy or something?? You alread got a great list rolling here, so this is a great start. I say that because there are like 30 or something Ryus out there. And a lot of shit edits/uncompleted works too, which gives Mugen a generally bad reputation (ALso see: All of those stupid Youtube videos).
All of your Mugen Portrait needs may be found HERE.

I'd like to report two robots on the MFG forums: One is EXShadow. The other is Saikoro.
There should be a Saikoro plugin for Photoshop.

Well the database is listed in the FAQs in the Introductions board. But who reads those things?!

I have to disagree. The guy who did those chars (I forgot his name and the chars are on an external drive) made a great work:

it was OMEGAPSYCHO ,IIRC (indeed great MK chars)

also, no Reu characters? would have thought DragonClaw is a no brainer in a starter pack (&/or any roster)

I'm not so sure starters should be subjected to difficult AI like that just yet.
Is finding MUGEN to be more enjoyable to play when you're not wearing clothes an underrated opinion?

it's not like we can't edit the AI level or something...plus, someone starting would love to play with this character (because it is well crafted) and it's a legacy in the mugen community anyway

Again, this is just a starter pack, and it was pushing 300 MB.

Well the database is listed in the FAQs in the Introductions board. But who reads those things?!
It'd be better if it was in the pack itself, in the readme, I think. That would require reuploading the whole thing, though, but it's just what, 40 minutes?

but seriously it would be nice if it was added

That's up to Iced. I think it'd be a good idea as well.
He said he wanted it to all be offsite related though. Which is why I put your whole optional anim standards thread in the pack instead of just linking it.

I was going to put several links in the pack.
