Sup guys, this is a tryout that me and some others were discussing about. a mugen pack for beginners, with a roster based on variety and basic tools:

So it seems you found out about Mugen.

First off, you can get the latest version on www.elecbyte.com , the latest stable one is 1.0, which is the one this pack is aimed for.

This pack is a variety pack, designed to showcase examples of interesting creations in mugen to help you get a headstart as a new mugen user
and to provide you as well with tools that would allow you to change the characters around and to dabble in editing
them ( and later on creating your own if you find out a taste for it ) .

This pack was put together by some of us at Guild( www.mugenguild.com) , we talked it out with the creators we could, those we couldnt are credited for their work
.
Below you will find a list of all the characters avaliable here, and a link to the creator website when avaliable.
If any of these characters particularly interests you , you should check out its readmes and head on to the creator website to find more about his other works.

if this turns out to help someone then who knows, we might do more packs down the line.

Hmm for a starter pack it's good; but I noticed the lack characters from games like Melty blood, Big bang beat and the like, also there is a digitized fighter but none from Mortal Kombat, and I don't think I saw a Marvel character in there either I think one source accurate mvc character and one custom one would work.

This pack is great!  The fighter factor included actually works like its supposed to on my pc,
my last fighter factory would tell me only 1 mugen can run at a time when ever i tried to test chars,
i dont know why because i never had mugen running.

also there is a digitized fighter but none from Mortal Kombat

that's cuz MK is severely lacking in quality in general in regards to mugen (not to stroke my own ego or anything. btw thanks for including me!)

if this turns out to be a thing that helps some people out we might do a second pack, who knows what would end up on that one?

Though, I'm not sure if we really should promote being lazy but eh.

And I strongly disagree with JS's Homer in this. Also, he quit Mugen so he won't care anyway.

promote lazy?
Why? Because the chars are packed instead of in different places?  Im trying to teach some people to fish for stuff instead of just having to search everywhere for things. Think about it this way, if you come across mugen today and didnt know anything about it, would you be able to come across several of those?

this isn't one of those mugen compilations of 300+ characters everyone and their mom, dog & evil clone release everyday. it's something ment for normalfags people to get an easy introduction to the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the mugen community.

it has a small and varied roster not for the purpose of increasing one's mugen collection but to show what can be done with the engien from almost-perfect-conversions, coversions that play like the original but have something the original didn't had, it also shows that you can take material from other games and with a little imaginaiton and hard work can convert them into completely different content or make your sprites and either port characters from other games or franchises or even come up with your own original material (and even something that does not neccesarily has to play like a fighting game)

let's face it, most if not all people are first attracted to mugen not becasue they can create their own game but because it seems like an interesting "game" (same applies to me and most/all of you). then if they have the motivation can start creating their own content

tl;dr: it's a good idea to introduce newcomers to mugen with a small and varied roster showing what can be made with mugen (could use some omegapshyco though...)

I'm really liking where this is going. I wish I had all of this guidance when I first stepped foot into Mugen-Infantry 7 years ago. I think you should also make the database Nunor has been working on a little more well known: A lot of people, who initially post here, ask for where to start. Someone then points them to the Database and their minds are blown.

Perhaps a list of what character is the best variant based on accuracy or something?? You alread got a great list rolling here, so this is a great start. I say that because there are like 30 or something Ryus out there. And a lot of shit edits/uncompleted works too, which gives Mugen a generally bad reputation (ALso see: All of those stupid Youtube videos).
All of your Mugen Portrait needs may be found HERE.

I'd like to report two robots on the MFG forums: One is EXShadow. The other is Saikoro.
There should be a Saikoro plugin for Photoshop.

I have to disagree. The guy who did those chars (I forgot his name and the chars are on an external drive) made a great work:

Well the database is listed in the FAQs in the Introductions board. But who reads those things?!
It'd be better if it was in the pack itself, in the readme, I think. That would require reuploading the whole thing, though, but it's just what, 40 minutes?

but seriously it would be nice if it was added

That's up to Iced. I think it'd be a good idea as well.
He said he wanted it to all be offsite related though. Which is why I put your whole optional anim standards thread in the pack instead of just linking it.

I was going to put several links in the pack.

That thread has the most prominent standards and seemed the most universally needed. So it's the only one I added since I had the "no links" stipulation...

Yeah, suggestion, include a 640x480 screenpack instead, most commonly used and it's the one that has the most bars made for it.

Jmorphman's screenpack would be good imo.

Other than that just need a few characters.

I'm not terribly fond of my older creations, if I had to pick one to include it would be either Kanae or Chronos.
I've spoken to Iced last week about the pack and one of my biggest complaints is the fact that these characters are just being included as-is.  If any of my creations are added let me know and I will fully comment the code beforehand.

I don't think I brought this up before in our discussion but I want to elaborate for anyone else reading this.
A good amount of advice given on this forum has been "Look at other characters, look how they've done X".  This type of advice is practically useless to someone with little or no prior experience coding mugen characters, so this type of behavior only promotes copy/paste slopfests.  It is essential to provide properly commented code if you want to have something looked at as an example and not as a source for code snippets.

Perhaps something by The_None could help showcase what Mugen can do when the authors get creative with their ideas. His Shaq, maybe?

Needs more "other" versions of KFM.

At first, I was thinking for a side by side comparison, but, then I thought it wouldn't be needed next to a totally new character.  Nevermind.

this character will be most likely used as code learning for beginners and it will interest them on your work further.

As much as I'd like to, my chars are more updated too frequently for me to be ok with one build being used ._. Although my marvel stuff should be fine (DO NOT USE AKUMA/GOUKI). What exactly did you want me to give since I have so many different things?

I reccomend your Yang  :sugoi:

Needs more "other" versions of KFM.

At first, I was thinking for a side by side comparison, but, then I thought it wouldn't be needed next to a totally new character.  Nevermind.

The list in the 1st post doesn't mention Elecbyte's own default KFM, that'd be  an important one to include as a baseline of sorts.

It's not only possible. It's encouraged!

Then I recommend something by 3ha - gotta love his mashup characters.

Splode's Randy Green also had some pretty interesting features (namely, a level up system and a menu to manage stats after a battle), as did his Rogue - although Eli's was also pretty feature packed.

Nobody ever converted Necromancer's old version of Piccolo to a more modern version of Mugen, I take it? It was impressively feature-packed: level up system, doubled himself and the AI for the double was entirely independent, not to mention a bunch of other stuff.

I have links for elecbyte site to get mugen from, I didnt include elecbyte kfm the same way that I didnt include their engine. It already comes prepacked.

I recall Kamekaze being asked about his MvC2 chars being included a while back.
Is finding MUGEN to be more enjoyable to play when you're not wearing clothes an underrated opinion?

Can't believe I forgot about them. :sweatdrop: Their emphasis on OTGs might be handy to look at along with their palette selectors.

pls I started pal select.

But that's not the point. the most recent update of falcon is the one I'm willing to commit. However there's like no real information for a newbie mugen person to learn anything from it if that's what this is about. I guess mvc3 Ken can be committed too as I don't see any updates being done to him for a while as well. MVC2 Hulk and Juggernaut are great for armor stuff and I'm not touching them for a while so they're fine.

One way to begin is look at how kfm work, although it was only 4+1, i have seen even 2+1 persons (one star wars game, WinMugen).

Mortall Kombat? I have think with some them :( . When at win ko one, it was begin "fly" up or down at forever. Why ?
And i think them not Mugen 1.1...
Hey, can i help, or maybe i need help

I know this is an old thread, but thanks for posting the starter pack!

I only got MUGEN a few weeks ago, but haven't gotten around to using it yet (other than playing as KFM). I downloaded the pack today, and it took me a while to figure out how to modify the character select screen for the 40-odd characters and re-arrange them and the big p1 and p2 faces so that the screen looked decent, but I was pretty satisfied when I did.

It also took me a while to find the right resolution and screen settings for my laptop, and to my liking, but now I feel I'm set.

Also, I originally started this pack in MUGEN 1.0 but the character 'K_Kyo' wouldn't work, so I tried putting it all into 1.1b and Kyo worked great.

This pack contains a very old version of Goku Z2. When was it last updated?
