So, I'm working on Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the poll winners from the very beginning of this project.

Obviously Sonic will be fast, and he'll have relatively low stamina. He'll have a mix of traditional gameplay elements as well as an Item Box system, explained below. He also runs both directions, as in, instead of a back dash/hop, he runs back. This Sonic is based mostly on Sonic 1 through 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, except for the inclusion of the homing attack he gained in the 3-D games.

The sprites are by HyperSonic, who mainly operates at MugenMultiverse. Snakebyte did some edits, and then I touched them up quite a bit to make them match the sprites of CvTW.

Screens (LOTS):

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

MOVESET

UNIQUE TACTIC

-Item Box - S Button
-Sonic jumps up and an item box appears. The item he gets is random (though some are rarer than others). Some items give Sonic access to new abilities and special moves. The different items and their effects are described at the end of this move list.

COMMAND MOVES

Spin Attack - Press D during forward run
-Just like in the Sonic games! Press D while running to transition into a spinning ball attack.

Insta-Shield - D+HP in air
-Sonic's attack introduced in Sonic 3. Very brief attack frame, but complete invincibility during the active frame and absorbs projectiles.

SPECIAL MOVES

-Spin Dash - QCF+P, mash P for Extra Hits
-Sonic does his classic spin dash attack. Pressing P several times at the beginning makes Sonic rev up more, which adds hits and distance to the dash.

-Sonic Slash - DP+K
-Sonic performs a quick anti-air Spin Attack. Got the idea from MugenHunter's version of Sonic.

-Homing Attack - DP+P (on the ground) or QCF+P (in the air)
-Sonic performs his Homing Attack. The name is a litttle misleading however. The HP version is a true Homing Attack, but has more start-up and recovery than the LP version. The LP version has less start-up and recovery, but travels at a set angle (and thus doesn't really home in on the opponent).

-Light Speed Dash - HCB+HK
-Sonic dashes very quickly from one side of the screen to the other, and if he passes by a non-guarding opponent, they are momentarily dizzied. This is primarily to give Sonic an opportunity to use an Item Box since it can be hard to fidn time in the heat of battle.

-Light Speed Loop - HCB+LK
-Sonic dashes back, up and around the screen to the other side. Strictly a teleport-type of move.

SUPER MOVES

L1 - Sonic Spinball (aka Maximum Sonic) - QCF+S
-Sonic bounces wildly all over the screen (mostly in back-and-forth horizontal motions). When he hits the walls, you hear the pinball sound effect. Very useful super, but sometimes does unreliable damage due to the random nature of the bounces.

L1 - Item Super - QCB+S
-Several of Sonic's items give him access to a new Super Move. Explained below. Using your Item Super uses up the item.

L1 - Blue Tornado - RDP+S
-Sonic spins around so fast that he creates a big vortex that sucks in his opponent.

L3 - Super Sonic - DP+S
-Sonic turns into Super Sonic, flies backwards off screen, and delivers a huge dashing attack. Much like Bison's Final Psycho Crusher from SFA3.

ITEM BOX SYSTEM

-Normal Shield - 25% Chance
-One absorbed physical hit, or one projectile. Slight attack power boost on all normals.
        -SPECIAL MOVE - None
-SUPER MOVE - Shield Burst - A lot like Skullomania's Skullo Energy attack. Sonic makes the Shield burst outwards.

-Fire Shield - 25% Chance
-Absorbs 1 physical hit, 2 projectiles. Slight attack power boost on all normals.
        -SPECIAL MOVE - Fire Dash - QCF+K in mid-air
              -Quick, powerful torpedo-like attack.
-SUPER MOVE - Inferno Dash - Does a stronger, longer version of Fire Das, however, this can be done in the air OR on the ground.

-Bubble Shield - 20% Chance
-Absorbs 1 physical hit or 1 projectile. Slight attack power boost on all normals.
         -SPECIAL MOVE - Bubble Bounce - D,D+K in mid-air
-Sonic descends quickly with a bounce attack. Will hit downed opponents. Low damage, but can be done repeatedly.
-SUPER MOVE - Bubble Blitz - Much like Sonic Spinball, but bounces vertically rather than horizontally and can hit downed opponents.

-Lightning Shield - 10% Chance
-Gives Sonic a double jump. Absorbs 1 physical hit or 2 projectiles. Will attract random rings from off-screen that restore a small portion of Sonic's health.
         -SPECIAL MOVE - Electric Arch - QCF+K
-Sonic jumps at an arch, leaving a trail of electricity in his wake.
-SUPER MOVE - Electric Orb - Sonic shoots off the shield like a projectile.

-10 Rings - 10% Chance
-Restores a small portion of Sonic's health. No other benefits.

-Dr. Robotnik Box - 5% Chance
-Damages Sonic for a small amount. Can't kill him, though.

-Invincible Stars - 4.9% Chance
-Gives Sonic 5 seconds of total invulnerability. Can't perform supers during. No other benefits.

-Extra Life - 0.1% Chance
-Restores ALL of Sonic's health. Super, super rare. If it proves to be a game-breaker, I'll remove it.

***********

Anyway, that's the plan right now. A lot of this is already done, but I'm open to ideas. However, I'd really like to stay away from any abilities/weirdness they did in the 3-D games (Werehogs, swords, etc.). I should have a video up soon as well.

This looks like it's gonna be very awesome when it's completed. If you go with the "big attack" version of the Super Sonic move, it'd be fairly similar to his Final Smash in Brawl (That is, if I'm reading that correctly).

L3 - Super Sonic - DP+S
-Sonic turns into Super Sonic. Undecided on whether this will be a transformation type of move, or whether it will just be a big attack where he turns back into normal Sonic at the end. Depends on the sprites available.
i think this might be workable as a transformation with relatively low effort if you made a different standing animation (maybe a different, floaty walk too) and just changed the palette for everything else.

Hahaha! Thanks for the credit man, I wasn't trying to creditwhore in the slightest when I said that, I was just surprised to see it here. The only idea I had is a Maximum Spider style multi-homing-attack hyper, but the Spinball one is too similar. Can't wait to see this one in action!

yea if you wanted to make him a completely transformation character.what titiln said would work perfect.  but if you go the way of doing a super sonic super I wouldn't mind helping spriting the actual super sonic sprites.

hell if you do titiln's way I'd still wouldn't mind doing some of his super sonic sprites.

Would you have the sprites to incorporate some variety of headstomp like Chun-Li's? considering aside from spinning into enemies, he also uses this method to traditionally hurt enemies in his source games.

That aside, overall very cool moveset, can hardly wait til he's finally ready :D

That could work. Or, an idea I had was to make it work like a semi-controllable Final Psycho Crusher like move. Having Super Sonic fly back and forth about 4-5 times, while holding up or down during his flight attacks could alter his pattern dependent on which direction you're holding of course. Essentially in SSBB, this is all you'd do anyway when you get a Final Smash orb with him. Fly back and forth, knocking people off the stage. I feel though for a MUGEN standard, he shouldn't have full control. That'd make it sorta cheap. Not travel as fast as Bison's FPC, but just like that move, he can't stop his forward momentum. He'd also be completely invulnerable during it, so, I think that would balance it out very well. Just another route you may be willing to take and you'd only need a flying animation really.

I really like the custom moveset you have here. Very creative. IDK if you'd be willing to or not, just another idea. Sonic's dive kick in SSBB(D+attack in air) was a very useful and potent attack. That'd be cool if you were to incorporate that in. IDK if he has that kick anim in the sprites you have though... And you may not be willing to sprite it, which is fine. Just another suggestion you may consider.

That wouldn't require new sprites since he curls up into a ball in the games. Unless they spinning sprite is different from his jumping sprite?

You should add the shoe box to the item box system... if he gets the shoe, he moves MUCH faster momentarily.. able to dodge and use attacks quicker than normal

The special or super move could be him running around the opponent really fast and leaving the opponent dizzy or perhaps in a mini tornado or something

Love the moveset. :)
This 0.1% stuff is game-breaking on its own, but it's so rare it's to be considered a sort of bonus stuff rather than a real gameplay feature. It's not like you could count on it "reliably" to save you.

Both those things are pretty doable, I think. If I did that with his L3, it'd basically be a L3 version of Sonic Spinball, which I'm okay with. I'd have to look up what his dive kick looks like, I haven't unpacked my Wii since I moved and I don't know if I want to just to see the move. Depending on what it looks like, I may already have sprites for it.

Oh, awesome.  Can't wait to give this guy a whirl when he's finished.

I think Super Sonic should be a transformation super as well, have it last for about 5-10 seconds, giving him a slight attack power increase and making him much faster.

I love the ideas you've got so far for Sonic. Staying true to his roots (+ homing attack) while still managing to be creative with his moves. The item box system is probably my favourite idea you've done for a unique tactic!

You make this Sonic fan very excited! I can't wait to try him!

A suggestion for Super Sonic, if it is a transformation super, have it put Sonic in a flight state.  This would let him do instant overheads with what would be air attacks, and air combos/loops similar to Dr. Strange or Nova.

I think if not for a full transformation and flying around like in Brawl, Super Sonic could also be altered to work like GokuZ2's Kaioken super move, where it would be a quick animation showing it, and then having him revert. That way if you do have to alter any sprites, it would probably lessen the amount this way.

This looks great.
congrats Sean.

winpose suggestions:
those tanks with animals inside fall from the sky, he proceeds to jump onto the button and free the animals
winpose: runs rapidly to the right, a rotating sprite appears with sonic giving a thumbs up and a message appears saying "SONIC FINISHED ACT 1" or act whatever, based on the round.

if you do anything super sonic related as a transformation instead of a move, have it seep out life, but keep some rings popping up now and then, which replenish it, it will be closer to the game feel where you had to keep getting rings.

he could probably get specials where he runs up the walls or up the enemies,
Maybe even something like Kabal special run move.

Wouldn't the whole Super Sonic thing be partially if not completely dependent on the item box system? If you incorporate it like in the games, then he should have to hit 50 rings before he can transform right? (just throw in a chaos emerald transition rather than having to deal with getting those too)

Another fairly easy move to consider would be, if he turns around quickly begins running in place, and as a result, he would rapidly kick up sand/rubble which would in turn be launched at his opponent.

Don't want to put too much thought into the lvl 3, too much work.  If it becomes a tranformation move, then it should only have new specials and a new level 3 super.

It'd run into the same problems as all transformations in MUGEN, and that's custom states during throws, as Sonic's quills are different when he's transformed.

Thing is, if this is a transformation for a set time that will allow you to move freely and attack, aside from maybe some flying/hovering sprites I think a palette swap would be the easiest way to deal with it, as Sean already did with the Golden Armour for Arthur.

It wouldnt make sense to draw all of those because sean is doing a project, not being ultra super perfectionist. A transformation is possible without all that hassle by editing only the must haves.

Oh that kind of not make sense, I thought you meant not making sense in context of Sonic's spine physics or something.

Either way, a SSBB style super seems better to me to avoid this altogether.

Another idea I had for Super Sonic would be similar to Bison's Psycho Crusher, just have him go gold, vanish and then charge right into the opponent.  It can do a lot of chip and be really unsafe but also work really well for punishing dumb stuff, and make it link comboable like POTS Bison did.

Do it like UMVC3's Maximum Spider.

Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, dashes on and off screen randomly at different angles, then end it with a de-transformed Sonic landing on the opponent like in the games.

That's already how Sonic Spinball works, which is why I said earlier it could just be viewed as a L3 version of the move, which is fine by me, but I'm sure someone will say his supers need more variety or utility.

^regarding that above statement, you could always give him 2 level 3 supers, and do what I mentioned, where he actually has to collect 50 rings for his "Super Sonic" special to be enabled.

In addition to that, you can also consider another way he can obtain rings is via combos, so if he lands 50 hits, that would land you enough for the transformation, just a thought at least.

Here's another example. Super Sonic would fly on and off screen knocking the opponent around then finishes them with a charged Chaos Blast.

Sonic transforms into Super Sonic.
Charges at the opponent, taking them "off screen" and into a Cinematic type screen.
Charges at the opponent headfirst upward, then flies off screen
Reapears to the left of the screen, delivering a elbow strike, then flying off screen again.
Appears again from the right hand corner of the screen, dealing an angled elbow strike.
Appears one more time at the top left hand corner of the screen, delivering the final elbow strike, knocking the opponent away further.
Sonic charges energy and fires a large energy ball at the opponent, finishing them off.

Here are the sprites im referencing to.

Sounds also like what I mentioned about pulling it off like GokuZ2's Kaioken, but you explained it a bit more in depth.

So, I'm getting to the point where I do need a voice for him. I haven't played SSBB in a long time. How was his voice in that game? Are there rips available?

For the Super Sonic thing, I think I'm leaning towards just a big attack super like mentioned rather than a full-on transformation. It will probably work exactly like Bison's Psycho Crusher from SFA3. He'll transform, go off screen, and come back with a huge dash attack, as was suggested earlier.

I'll probably just use those SSBB voices then, they're pretty much made for a "fighting" game, so no reason not to.

Out of curiosity, Are you gonna make a palette template by chance? Not sure if you mention'd that within the last few pages/post... I haven't bother'd to look back, due to being extremely busy at work...

Especially since he hasn't even played with this one, only having seen a video of a beta.

Anyway, I haven't put up a palette template yet, but I don't usually include people's palettes in the characters themselves. I prefer to let people release packs on their own.

Wow Sean, this is surely one of the most interesting additions to the roster! I mean, he's pretty iconic, and the least humanoid char you have so far I think, so it creates some diversity. The whole Item Box system looks interesting. Good luck, but we already know you'll have no trouble pulling it off ;)

I am not sure what I am more relieved about, that my blurs look mostly okay in action or that you used the shield sounds from the Genesis games.

This is looking to be one of the most impressive CvTW creations. Wow. :)

Looking quite nice and I can't wait to play him (and make some palettes for him too!), I would say adding a bit of visual flair would definitely not hurt though.

As I mentioned earlier for a slide move, something like this , just a small effect on things like the flip kicks and spins.

Even a bit seen here
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

For the lightning shield, I think the effect could use a bit of work, maybe borrow something from Magneto or Benimaru possibly and swap it?

I don't think he has a slide kick, I was just using it more for the example on the effect of the attack.

Here are some quick example palettes I threw together based on the .gif Sean posted. I'll probably end up adding some of these, and my usual batch of custom palettes in to the palettes I make for him.

Some Defaults

Based on various Sonic Characters

Random palette.

1. Based upon the Sonic Cartoon "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog"
2. Attempt at "Classic Sonic"
3. Based upon "Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)"
4. Based upon Sonic's appearance in "Wreck-It Ralph"

I'll probably remake these palettes myself when Sonic is released in the game/community, due to the fact that the palette scheme maybe different than yours.

The shield comes straight from Sonic 3, blown up and with some filters applied. All of the shields are like that. I like the way they look.

The palettes look good. I gave him palettes based on Shadow, Silver, and Amy (like you did), and planned on doing ones for Knuckles and Tails.

Wow! I'm really liking how this sonic is being worked out! I noticed that the item box is more like a chance to him & you added the robotnik item box from the 2 player mode. Have you been thinking about adding the teleport item box in as well or are three shields & the robotnik item box are going to be it? But on the real, I'm really looking forward to this sonic. I could suggest a few victory quotes for him if you want.

3 things of importance
- Sonic Spinball's block properties. Does it count as a crossup due to the lack of blockstun? I can't quite tell from the video(I might not have watched enough) but I'm just making sure this is confirmed :P
- Secondly, is his comboability limited or extended? Beyond what was seen in the video, are there more possibilities? I know the standard answer would be "yes" but I'm wondering if there's a LITTLE more or a LOT more. Pardon my curiosity.
- Thirdly, is he slated for a public release, like Haggar was? If so, I already have plans ;3.

Either way, it's good to see Sonic in action with elemental shields from my personal favorite Sonic game (Sonic 3 & Knuckles.) Can't wait to see more progress!

But are there truly grown men in this world?!

I thought we were gonna get a preview of his Super Sonic super. Though, I guess you haven't implemented it yet, which is cool. I'm loving what I've seen in the vid. Very cool. Something I wanted to note though, was the bouncing mechanic from Bubble Shield. In the fight against Alex, it didn't appear as if Sonic was actually reaching the ground before bouncing back up. Looked a bit weird, but other than that, I applaud your innovation sir.

So on the mugen wiki page for Sonic I found this gif of Claymizer's Sonic

I'm assuming that his Super Sonic move will basically be something like this ,or will it it actually be controllable like in Brawl in the end. I've seen it described, and assuming you're going with more of the Psycho Crusher type move, judging by some previous comments.
