Norton sucks, Ad-aware is a resource hog. I'm not too knowledgeable on which prog on the net is the best to use so I turn to the guild.

Suggestions please?

Spybot S&D seems pretty good to me

BTFW: As good as it once was, AVG has become bloatware. Don't get it

  • Haven't had any VIRUS attacks logged in the last three years
  • Stopped using any anti-spyware software for the same reason

I'm running ESET NOD32 Antivirus because my family pays for it anyway and until the release of Vista SP2 (fixed by now) it never gave me trouble.

It doesn't seem to slow me down -- or do anything much, but hey.

Looking for a free program, I would give Avira AntiVir a try.

I am fortunate enough to have a registered copy of McAffee antivirus and it is working wonders just by itself.
I use CCleaner on the side to help keep my system running quickly, but that's not an anti-virus/spyware program at all.

AVG anti virus. it protects against all kinds of viruses. and it tells you which sites are bad or not (if you google it) and its free. it also has updates like every month or something

^ NOD 32 has updates like daily....
One awesome feature is that if a virus is not recognizable by NOD32 just update it and it will immediately recognize and remove it... Plus NOD32 has saved my PC from ConFicker number of times....

I actually use 4 different programs which each cover the weakness of the others:

- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Spybot
- Hostsman
- and a good firewall (not the one that comes with windows)

With this "suite", I can protect my computer from adware/malware, protect my windows' registry from unexpected/unwanted changes, prevent my computer from accessing and displaying content from ugly hosts (no more banners displayed that may load malicious stuff into my computer), and last but not least, monitor all incoming and outcoming traffic of my computer.

I run avast along with threatfire, use ccleaner and malwarebytes scans about once a week or so.

Everything is free,  go here   to get them all.
