Download Tools -> General Purpose Tools -> ImageSplitter

What is it?
ImageSplitter will take your image and split it into pieces with only 256 colors.

What is it good for?
Say goodbye to color loss when making stages!

Best way? just put your bg in .PNG format in some simple location. Let's say "D:/". Now start the program, you'll see:

Input file?

just type:

Code:
D:/mystage1.png

Mode?
Choices: largest <Default, Fast> : quarter <Fastest> : layer <Best, Big Files>

Convert to 16bit color? Y/N <Default is N>

Done. Simple as that.

Just use Layer. It makes you able to position all images at the same place (the image size is the same on all parts).

If all you get when you open it is a command prompt which closes right away, try updating to the most recent version of the Java Runtime.  It fixed it for me.

I highly reccommend using the 16 bit conversion option if your color count is any higher than 65536.  [E] told me that MUGEN does this conversion anyway with stages, and you'll end up far less pieces than you would otherwise.

Also, Kung Fu Man uploaded a slightly older version, I changed the default option to layer so I'm going to go yell at him now.

Are you open to suggestions on how to improve the program a little bit?

If so:

  • There should be some option where I can manually determine how many tiles I want at X and Y (that way I can avoid slacing something that doesn't need to be indexed couple times).
  • Some % progress bar somewhere would be real good too. Maybe at the system bar.

When you use layers every piece will have the exact same axis.  Just place the layers on top of each other with mask=1.

I mean that there should be an option for people to manually type how many slicing boxes they want to do horiztontally and vertically. Some people don't mind that it might screw up the image a little.

Hmm.. I tried using this but I got 100+ pics in output using Layer. D:
I tried loading it up in Mugen but I get massive slowdown.
Is there anyway to decrease the amount of output you get?

Try to sharpen the image a bit, or put some "smart blur" effect (adobe photoshop). It should reduce the colors count.

Just use 16bit option and seperate your stage bg to layers.

Then, copy & paste (and edit) as many times as is the count of the seperated layers this piece of code:

Thanks for this program, it works very well.
Now I have to find a program which allows me to turn down the color count of an image manually before using ImageSplitter, because the image for my CastleVanilla stage got split into 63 layers, which is too much for many computers to process. :(

gfx gale allows you to turn an image to 16bit while using dithering.
