Bringing yet another co-sign to Shin Sekai Yori, Parasyte -the maxim- and Cowboy Bebop. All really good shit.

Beyond those, try some Baccano! for that supernatural gangster goodness. Also notable in that the dubbing feels right at home, much in the vein of Cowboy Bepop.

im inclined to recommend Zankyou no Terror
If you can ignore the shitty MC and some ridiculous moments, I'd recommend Mirai Nikki. Has some nice twists. and violence.

it doesn't have any real life subject other than an initial revenge thing, but I recommend the first season/series of K.

Bokurano is an interesting psychological series. The manga is amazing, btw.

I'd advise against the Bokurano anime because it is not a great adaptation.  In fact I would not suggest reading the manga either unless you are emotionally prepared.  It is a seriously draining and tragic experience, it's DAMN good but there is no happiness to be found.  That shit fucked me up for like a month straight.

the ones i had in mind have already been mentioned.
Same here, the one I saw recently is very edgy respect about highschool life, just in case I leave you the link of it.
About other recommended series, I agree with various options here, especially Mushishi, it's totally worth to see, and also I recommend its live-action movie directed by noneless than Katsuhiro Otomo.
Here're some series I like that you can see that aren't be mentioned yet:
-Barakamon
-A-Jin (it's on Netflix BTW)
-Eden of the East
-Apart of the first movie and Stand Alone Complex, all the other Ghost in the Shell movies, like Innocence and Arise
-And about Shirow, Appleseed and Appleseed Alpha
-Trinity Blood
-Speed Grapher
